The only possible good to come out of such an event is that maybe the government and utility providers would finally fix the massive problems in the grid after something like this happened.
It should be compartmentalized so that any serious issue should affect as small an area as geographically possible. A squirrel shouldn't be able to take out the entire grid in New England.

I myself am from the previous generation we didn't have all of this stuff and we somehow managed to get by.

'Survivor' of the '03 blackout here...no, it was not fun and my area was only out for three days. It was hot as hell, though, and I had no food, nor could I get money to buy food. People went crazy over bottled water and buses out of the city (NYC). I stood on my stoop and watch a bus chug up the avenue with people hanging off the sides. The first night, it was pitch black in the streets and all I could hear was screaming and glass breaking. No thank you.

If the grid went down because of a coronal mass ejection, hahaha oh man that would the straw that breaks the camel's back in that all of society would come down. No one, other than psychopaths, seriously wants that to happen.

We're talking about large swaths of the country without power for months and depending on the time of year people dying from heat stroke or exposure never mind all the starvation that would occur from people not being able to go to Wal-Mart etc and buy food etc whenever they need it. What do you mean you can't take my Visa card? What do you mean my bank is off line too? How do I buy gas if the pumps don't work or take credit cards? Wait you mean the water pumps that power my sewers aren't working either? Everyone is getting sick from dysentery, typhoid, typhus and on and on. People who need diabetes meds (insulin) kept cold die because their blood sugar goes crazy...

The entire southwest of the United States (everything west of Tulsa to the Pacific ocean) is basically a desert and much of the water people get and depend on comes from powered pumps or powered wells....

Think about how old your local dam is, and how hard it would be to get & replace parts that get fried from an electrical storm. Most dams are using parts built 30-50 years ago if not older. Just to get the replacement parts for the dams would take months now, and who knows how long after large scale societal collapse. This is ignoring how bad it would be to replace all the exposed wires and transformers running along the thousands of miles of road we have in the country.

It would be years before the USA recovered. Hoping for the lights to go out, even half hardheartedly, means you're basically hoping for millions and millions of people to die....

I don't *HAVE* to. And besides, I can rig up a hot shower. There are woods around me for fuel, and a sizable river within easy walking distance. I've got some large pots that would hold a goodly amount of hot water, and I've got a hose I can use as a siphon to do the shower. Oh, and it's got this groovy hand-held adjustable shower head on it:

I had a discussion about this with my father some months back. Apparently there's a chance of this happening within the next four years IIRC, and it would allegedly take something like ten years for them to actually get the grid even partially running again.
I think it's at least possible that this could be a good thing for society, or at least for America. People could come together out of mutual necessity (food production, protection, etc.) and we could collectively remember what's really important in life- things like family, friends, and community. All the trivial things that people waste their lives on like celebrity culture, fashion, and most of the increasingly ridiculous reality show that we call modern politics would disappear overnight since they would be absolutely useless. We would probably forget about trying to police private morality as well, since it would be impossible to justify using limited resources on trying to stop gay people from getting married or to prevent recreational drug use. We need a good hard reminder of what's really important, and we've forgotten those things so completely that I think it would take something of this scale to really drive the point home.
