Germany is looking great against Argentina, though Argentina has got some great defense right outside the goal, they've stopped some nice chances.

Though with all these heads banging together, this isn't looking much like a friendly.

Is there a requirement for national teams to play so many friendlies per year to remain in good standing with FIFA?

United are going to have a very scary front line this season. If RVP can stay healthy (and that's a big if) United have a shot at the league.

Sad day for Arsenal. Ten years ago the thought of selling an Arsenal player, let alone their best player to United would have been unthinkable at any price

Regardless, can't wait for the season to start.

Donnchadha: Is there a requirement for national teams to play so many friendlies per year to remain in good standing with FIFA?

No.

FIFA sets the windows in which matches can take place - hence the breaks in league play. It is up to national associations as to whether or not they schedule a fixture if there isn't a qualifier scheduled for [say] the World Cup. Most do for financial reasons - hence Spain playing in Puerto Rico.

I'd say MUFCs greatest weakness was their midfield, then the defence rather than the attack. Two weeks of the transfer window left, so an awful lot can happen.

Oh wow, Zieler (Ger goalie) gets sent off, penalty kick for Argentina. I don't think that was the right call.

And they take out Mueller? Argh.

Come on Marius, it's only a friendly.

Messi shoots. MISSES!

Absolutely. Their midfield was the one thing I thought they would strengthen this summer. Are Giggs and Scholes going to be starting? As good as they are, they're getting a little long in the tooth.

The Guardian publishes a series of season previews - one for each team.

Link to the first, Arsenal, here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/aug/06/premier-league-pre view-arsenal

Usually worth a read, even if just to smirk at their league placing predictions.

I'd imagine they will both be used to fill in gaps - I'd guesstimate 10-15 starts plus the same number of substitute appearances each. Perhaps less/more depending on cup runs and injuries to other players. Fletcher played a game last week!

Messi didn't even try.

Ukraine -Czech game is wide open now and the ref is letting the game be physical. Petr Cech is of course keeping them in the game. Czechs just need to find a striker (they only brought 2)

Ter Stegen is a really great up-coming talent in Germany. First touch he saves Messi's (poor) penalty.

Own goal. Fark. C'mon Germany.

So is this thread about the upcoming EPL season or the friendlies?

Or both?

Liverpool opens at West Brom. The PVR guide doesn't say which game it's getting. I'm hoping it's that one.

Looking at the schedule I'd guess NUFC Vs Spurs.

Besides, just about every player that Wenger sold at that age basically becomes a shadow of themselves afterward.

Me? Thanks for the £24 Million SAF; Arsenal can use that to buy M'Vila or Javi Martinez from Bilbao

Javi Martinez is off to Bayern. But I'll enjoy watching Arsenal this season, if for no other reason than you've got a damn handsome team.

Probably not. MUFC play a lot of games - and Berbatov seems to be on the way out.

Get a team that can play at pace and Giggs and Scholes become useless.

Piers is a useless waste of space; I remember seeing his "performance" in last season's ManU/Arsenal game and wishing he were a City or S***s fan.
