what do column writers have to hang up?

Mustard-stained polo shirts and ratty old sneakers.

Typewriter ribbon?

Depends how old-school he is.

My dad and I were coming out of a Celtics game a few years ago (in the moribund pre-KG years) and wound up walking up the street next to Bob Ryan. Dad nodded at him and said something like "Tough loss, huh?" and for the next ten full minutes Bob Ryan talked basketball at us (not TO us, we couldn't even get a word in) about the quality of play, and the future of Paul Pierce and where he could be traded to, the possible draft picks coming up, the comparison of modern players to some of the greats, and I don't even know what else. But some of his monologue was in the column the next day, so I'm glad we got a chance to help him work out his material.

In short, the dude knew his stuff, was entertaining, and will be missed, not least because now there's nobody sharing the front page with Shaughnessy.

CSB:

I was friends with him on Facebook not too long ago, but he posted a message saying that he had to "clean house", so a bunch of us would probably be deleted from his friends list...nothing personal.

I posted:

"Woody Paige wouldn't de-friend me."

He responded:

"He wouldn't have friended you in the first place."

Plaschke, Ryan, Paige and I'm pretty sure I've seen Jay Mariotti on that show before. That sounds not so much like entertainment but a conspiracy between the Disney company and various electronics manufacturers to force people into buying a new TV every few weeks after their blinding rage gets the best of them.

i can only stomach about 9.2 seconds of that show, between the "aren't I pretty?" host and the weird 80s game show theme. or whatever it is.

i liked Ryan on Sports Reporters but as I've largely given up on ESPN the last couple of years, I haven't seen Ryan or anybody, really. I taped Rome Is Burning religiously but when jumped to CBS the show didn't translate and i've largely given up on Rome. so the only ESPN I watch anymore is......uhh.....excluding EPL and NFL.....not much.

but every now and then i'll watch SportsCenter/ PTI and then I'll find that stupid game show.

He deserves to be dead last....especially since he said that the Seahawks had no business being in the playoffs at 7-9, and then they humiliated New Orleans in the first round.

I like the seahawks, but he has a valid point about a team with a losing record making the playoffs. It wasn't a knock on the team, but the system.

If you win your division, you go to the playoffs....it's not a bad system at all. Besides, it's not like it happens on a frequent basis.

If you like LeBatard, I would suggest listening to his show on 790 The Ticket at 3pm eastern. There are always a few segments of uncomfortable, douche-chill radio daily that is quite entertaining.

Also, I will miss reading Bob Ryan's columns in the Globe.

It isn't a bad system as long as every division has at least one team that is made up of professionals. The NFC West should be rebranded as the minor league for the NFL and replaced with a real NFL caliber division.

Yeah....and yet that minor league caliber team known as the Seahawks somehow managed to beat the Saints in the first round of the playoffs.

Even a blind squirrel cracks a nut once in awhile. I live in Seattle, so it isn't like I don't know how bad the NFC West has been. God damn do I miss the days when I could watch a real NFL game on Sunday. Here they black them all out so we can watch the Shiathawks play the farking Rams or Cards. What a joke.

2012-08-15 07:10:33 PM
My favorite Bob Ryan story was when he was taking on Jason Kidd's wife, saying how much an attention whore she was keeping that jerseyed kid of theirs in her lap. He gets suspended, and on the next Sunday conversation, there's Jason Kidd with that jerseyed rugrat in his lap, totally proving Ryan's point.

And Mariotti only existed to make fun of Woody Paige. He was clueless and aggressive in his ignorance.

2012-08-15 07:11:38 PM
We're losing Bob Ryan, but we're still stuck with Skip Bayless, Stephen A. Smith, Colin Cowherd, Dennis Dodd, Gregg Doyel, and Mitch Albom wasting our time.

I was walking with a buddy of mine through the Ren Cen in Detroit the day of the National Championship in 2009. There's a Marriott there, and it apparently was the media hotel. I met up with my father and said, "We just saw Bob Ryan walking through the hotel lobby."
Without missing a beat, Dad said, "Did you tell him Mariotti's a jackass?"

None of the panelists are anywhere near as annoying as Bill Plaschke, but I agree that Bomani Jones is good on there. If it could be said, I think he would be very underrated amongst the panelists. Woody Paige is always entertaining and Cowlishaw is great as the straight man.

That being said, Bob Ryan is the man, and I'm sad to see him go.
