Steve Jobs is an asshole rotting in the ground.

Flash is an abomination.

That is all.

Now if it would also die on all other devices, that would be perfect.

It's dead on all phones and tablets now. If you believe Macs and PCs are on their way out long term, then Flash will die with it.

If Windows 8 is the only phone with Flash, MS wins by default thus ending years of Mac/Linux vs PC wars in one fell swoop...

Sort of like winning the cold war. It would have fallen on mobile devices anyway, whether or not one did anything.

ThatGuyGreg: Flash is an abomination.

Yes, but it's the standard abomination, so we're stuck with it for a little while longer and anybody who thinks that's not true is just delusional. When porn goes HTML5 (and still works right), then we'll be free of Flash and it's every-fifteen-seconds security updates.

This gives a victory to the late Steve Jobs, who decided in 2007 that Flash was a bloated, insecure, battery and processor killing piece of outdated technology which didn't belong on mobile devices like the iPhone.

To be fair, shiatty performance is what happens when your phone is constantly two generations of technology behind the competition because you spend 90% of your development time tweaking the hue of the plastic case until it's just right...

Flash will die when millions of Farmville players cry out in panic when they use their shiny new Windows 8 desktop, click on the "Internet Explorer" rectangle (assuming they figured out they need to start typing at the clock screen to log in), log into Facebook, add their new PC to the Facebook account, click on Farmville, and are told that the game doesn't work in Internet Explorer.

They'll probably miss the little box that says "Open in desktop IE"

The question is: will the owners of these new Windows 8 desktops return them to the store or will they seek out alternative ways of fulfilling their dream of being a farmer? (or just open up IE in desktop mode)

Flash of course, will be around for a while. And that's fine frankly. It does a lot of things quite nicely. It's gonna die in mobile though and that's fine too.

I have flash installed for one reason - occassionally you find a site (and especially restaurant sites) that use it (despite the fact that they can use javascript/DOM to replicate what you need for a restaurant site).

I uninstalled it about 6 months ago and found my internet experience lacking quite a bit more than a few online menus so I put it back. When it dies, it dies. I'm not in love with it but until the rest of the web catches up it's nothing worse for me than an occasionally annoying update inconvenience. Which for me, is less annoying than needing it to see something but it not being there.

That's an appropriate quip since iPhone technology is from roughly that time period.

More likely they spend 90% of their development time telling people that learning objective-c is good for their careers. At least, that's what it seems like when I attend developer events.

Which is fine, since iOS runs native code rather than a grossly inefficient, battery-killing VM.

Nope, HTML5 with h.264 encoding. You can actually change over to HTML5 in Youtube on a desktop browser if it supports it (Safari, Chrome). Google sticks with Flash on youtube because most browsers are not HTML 5 compliant with h.264 (Most IE's, Firefox) and Flash can be installed as a module if they don't have it.

Sweet, didn't even know this. Gonna have to switch to the html5 youtube format when I get home, videos have been slow to load the past few weeks and it's driving me nuts. Maybe this will help.

This should help.

And they even label what browsers will work:

Firefox 4 (WebM, Available here)
Google Chrome (WebM)
Opera 10.6+ (WebM, Available here)
Apple Safari (h.264, version 4+)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (h.264, Available here, WebM support avaliable here)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8 with Google Chrome Frame installed (Get Google Chrome Frame)

I forgot it also supports HTML5 with WebM, but I believe that is less utilized than h.264

There will come a time when Flash designers can just export their stuff straight from .fla to html/js/css/images/video/audio and have it work just as well as .swf files ever works.

I actually checked that right before I posted my comment but just now read it:

"Videos with ads are not supported (they will play in the Flash player)"

That kinda sucks since 95% of the people I watch on a daily basis are partnered. Oh well, I'll still switch over.

All I know is that they've included it in the latest set of design tools. Actually, on a related note, Microsoft has also discontinued the Silverlight plugin, but promise to keep Silverlight working- by making the client HTML5.

JohnBigBootay: And when that time comes I'll be all over it.

For everything but games, that time is now. Speaking as someone who routinely blocks Flash, I'm discovering that most video sites have started to agree with me- many of them don't serve Flash anymore, or at least give up when my browser doesn't accept it.

H264 for video compression sure, i fully support that... but i LOVE Flash for the creation of interactive multimedia that incorporates layers upon layers of video, vector graphics, bitmaps, and 2D animation. Its a mature toolset that HTML5 currently doesn't come close to matching.

I had recently formatted my phone and forgot to reinstall Flash, and after reading this article, i was horrified to see that indeed, i couldn't find Adobe Flash on the Android market anymore, but rest assured... I clicked on a Flash website, and the prompt will take you to the (hidden) download....

So...... Flash ain't going anywhere... If anything,... Jobs has just made it more exclusive... Something an Ipad/Iphone fanboy should probably admire.

Flash is still alive...
Steve Jobs is dead...

Flash wins.

Do ANY of you remember what the internet was like before Flash?
Every movie preview site had 4 buttons: REALplayer, Windows Media, QuickTime and download.
None of them worked very well.

Flash currently supports full 3D gaming Link in a browser...
What else does? Nothing. The only people who lose if Flash dies are consumers, because they will have less options.

Adobe will be fine because they have the market cornered on HTML5 tools. But HTML5 doesn't have a tenth of Flash's capabilities.
What happens when all the annoying popup ads and videos are in HTML5? Harder to block, harder to avoid.
And when HTML5 finally does allow decent gaming and apps then Apple will just go to signed code to 'protect their users' and you'll have to pay them for stuff that the rest of us get for free. Again.

Yes, Flash has trouble playing on mobile devices. Flash is powerful, they are not.
But someday soon phones will be powerful enough to support real multimedia, and there won't be any cross platform tools available to create it.

Flash ain't dead yet.

T.rex: Money talks, haters walk.

And that's why Michael Bay is the greatest filmmaker of this or any era.

Without Fail: What happens when all the annoying popup ads and videos are in HTML5? Harder to block, harder to avoid.

Um, no? All they have to do is remove certain elements from the DOM before the page renders. That's not hard at all.

Without Fail: What else does? Nothing.

Unity, which provides a full game engine and crushes Flash on performance.

Without Fail: And when HTML5 finally does allow decent gaming and apps then Apple will just go to signed code to 'protect their users' and you'll have to pay them for stuff that the rest of us get for free. Again.

There are already a few decent HTML5 gaming apps. Heck, the recent batch of Google Doodles are at least as complicated as 70% of the iPhone/Flash game market. And Apple has shown that they really don't care about what people do with web apps- because they know that a native app will always be superior, and they get a cut of native apps.

Which, as a note, there's a cross-compiler that turns Flash into Cocoa-friendly code for iOS.

Without Fail: Flash is powerful, they are not.

So powerful that Adobe has abandoned the mobile platform and thrown their weight behind HTML5. It's one thing to white-knight a product, but when the people making the product contradict you, you're full of shiat. Flash isn't going to sleep with you.
