Tom Cruise has been a bit of a tough sell for awhile now. I think his best bet would be to do full on hardcore ghey porn and get it over with.

At this point and as long as he's not making any more Schizopolises, don't studios give Soderbergh a black check even for his indie cred grabs?

Loved The Dictator. Sacha is a genius. I laughed my ass off when he gave the speech to the U.N. about throwing away democracy and embracing a dictatorship and then went on to name all of the shiat the U.S. has been doing for the last 10 years.

Hilariously the Wall Street Journal cited Moonrise Kingdom as an example of the diversity of the movie industry this summer. The whole article came off like "We got something for everyone! Avengers and Battleship for manchildren and Moonrise Kingdom for people who wouldn't be caught dead in an arthouse movie theater otherwise!"

This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the end of Sandler; it will soon see the end of the Cruise.

To be fair, Rock of Ages failed because it's a movie about absolutely terrible music. No cast could save that.

Has Adam Sandler ever been funny?

Can't remember a single film he's ever done that would made me even slightly smile.

Sadly the article mentioned a Grown Ups 2. If that one so much as breaks even he'll still be cranking out the shiatfests.

I don't know. He did star in Ghost Protocol earlier this year. I think he's at a point in his career where he needs to stick with compelling character parts (see Magnolia, Tropic Thunder) and he may have a couple of high octain action flicks in him. I think you could have stuck Johnny Depp in Rock of Ages in that part and it still would have tanked.

that was an appallingly bad movie.

Cabin in the Woods is still the best film I've seen this year.

Taking your kids to an ice age movie should have child services visiting you.

The first one was meh, the second one was poor. Utterly unmemorable. Makes Shrek look like Citizen Kane Vertigo, The only entertaining thing is the squirrel that appears occassionally.

I agree with him, plot holes aside it had two excellent performances and some incredible visual effects, seen in 3-D it blew me away. Compare to every other sci-fi genre film and I put it in the top 10%. Compare to "film" films and not so much. I liked it far more than Avatar.

She's, don't tell the fark geek hipster brigade that Prometheus was successful. They're going to have an aneurism!

kab: To be fair, Rock of Ages failed because it's a movie about absolutely terrible music. No cast could save that.

Nah, it failed because of how transparent it was to play of the resurgence of joke 80's cover music bands that play to college kids and hipsters.

Getting wasted at a dive and listing to "good" covers of bad music with friends can be really fun. Sitting through a Tom Cruise movie that panders to that culture is insulting.

If I had known that Richard Ayoade (Moss from The IT Crowd) was in The Watch I would have made it a point to see it. As it was, as heavily advertised as it was, he didn't even appear in the trailer. Good maketing there, guys.

Because, really, when kids decide what films they want to see they make damn sure to check with the parentals to verify the quality of the script and voice talent.

For me:

1) Avengers
2) Moonrise Kingdom
3) Amazing Spiderman
4) Dark Knight Rises
5) Safehouse
6) Lockout

Huh... I think that's all I've watched this year.

I'm not trolling about Batman either. That movie was by far the worst of the trilogy.

Fark that. It was a good popcorn flick.

I'm still waiting for Cabin and Moonrise to go to video, but going forward my hope is on Looper, Bond, and Django to get the job done in the Fall/Winter.

If anything, Tom Cruise may have brought in people who wanted to see him camp it up in an 80's-themed jukebox musical.

/saw it
//enjoyed it for what it was

Prometheus sucked. The plot sucked. I don't care how pretty a movie is if the plot just sucks.

Luckily they all dies.

I thought MI4 was a well-crafted action movie. The scene with the windows actually "got" me; usually things like that don't, but my stomach churned a little. It didn't really give me anything to think about, but that's fine.

Prometheus was ok. Plot holes in action movies don't bother me, but plot holes in movies that ask me to think bother me a little. I thought the only performance of note was David.

While the visual effects were really good, some of it was just stupid. Why is the ignition device for a spaceship boiled eggs and a flute? Also, the fact that the lead character was running around immediately after the surgery scene was ridiculous.

FTFA: "So why did Rock Of Ages under perform?"

Because it's about the 80's and no one gives a sh*t about the sh*tty sh*tty 80's anymore. The current nostalgia decade is the 90's. Do a movie called Grunge of Ages, or 90's Dance of Ages, or something. That would sell a million tickets.

That's why I wanted to see it. My problem with it was Guy Pearce. Which is weird, because he's one of my favorite actors of all time. I just don't think he was right for that role.

The scene where's he's getting interrogated and just spews one-liner after one-liner was hilarious though.

2012-08-15 11:26:02 AM
Killer Joe is the only HOLY SHIAT movie I've seen this year, and urge anyone lucky enough to have it screened nearby to go see that bit of badassery. I can't think of an American movie since Reservoir Dogs that was so awesomely Not Hollywood (or as shockingly violent, graphic with both the violence and sex/nudity, with none of it gratuitous).

Also: Gina Gershon.

2012-08-15 11:26:11 AM
Trolling subby.

Rock of Ages wasn't a "Tom Cruise" movie. It was an ensemble cast of which Tom was part of. Do you consider Magnolia to be a "Tom Cruise" movie too?

Also, Rock of Ages was going to suck no matter who was there.

I thought SH2 was okay, but where was the mystery to follow along with? It ended up being more like MI than SH.

He appeared frequently in the marketing I saw (trailers, posters, commericals). So maybe the world doesn't revolve around you after all. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I didn't like the first one for the same reason. There was hardly a "mystery" and him solving it at the end was just random BS. I didn't try the second, but maybe i'm just not the audience for an action movie when I'm expecting a Sherlock Holmes movie.
