The last time I saw my hometown in a headline was in a paper back east on a family summer trip 25? years ago now. They called it "Little Mexico" which anyone who has ever lived there or knows the town could tell is certainly accurate enough. This kind of headline is much more disturbing. I can almost picture exactly where that church is off the top of my head (just from living in that town enough years, somewhere around Lincoln Street I think) and definitely could with a glimpse at google earth.

Enough. Enough of the Church's denials, Enough of members Denials, Enough of the abuse. Any good the Catholic Church has done in the past is so tainted by these Evil men that it is now beyond the point of redemption. Its time to speak of the possibility of treating the Church as a illegal enterprise, and outlawing the practice of sacrificing the young to the many pedophiles that occupy this organisation. If your praying for gods protection from Evil, i think the church has shown where this evil lurks.
If there has been any other victims by this creature, the Church should be shuttered until the Vatican can provide a plan that will eliminate this from ever happening again, whether its all Priests supervised, and under observation when dealing with the young, or Chemical castration for the Orders (They are to be celibate anyways, right?) or the removal of that tenet from the Church all together.
Its 2012, people its time to put a end to these predators once and for all, demand a complete and unwavering investigation, no matter where it leads.
Horrific Monster.............

"Woodburn"?

Is that the town or what the Priest was suffering from?

Attention parents: stop handing your children over to priests to spend the night with them or take them on trips. You have to be told this?

Quite right. I think we've all had enough of the church's taint.

It really is getting the point where the number one predictor of pedophilia is being a member of the clergy. And yet, they (clergy) still receive tons of adoration from their congregations and billions of dollars in tax exemptions every year (fun fact: churches are exempt from taxes in an amount that is almost equal to the entire national science budget - we could likely have gone to Mars with Curiosity ourselves if scientific organizations had their budgets doubled...).

Why is our country so intent on protecting pedophiles that happen to work for a religious institution? Doesn't that kind of send the wrong message? Namely - if you like to rape kids, the safest place to be employed is the church. That strikes me as somewhat... antithetical to any possible claim to morality.

I remember when I was a kid and they told me that if I had a problem and couldn't get to or speak to my parents, seek out a teacher or minister. Today those are the people kids should be afraid of.

well, to the priest's credit, it was worth a shot. It worked for Dahmer.

Where does the church pick up these people?!

'Oh you are a pedo?! Well come on in, Jesus loves you!' fast forward 20 years when he's made his way through the church and is now a pastor....with children always around him...

Seriously...background checks and psychoanalysis might not build you that parish center...but it will save in lawsuits!

I can't imagine how something like this gets set up.

"Dad, can I spend the night at Father Perez's house? Please? Please please please?"

No, that ain't it.

"Son, you're gonna sleep at Father Perez's house tonight, because...uh..."

No, that ain't it either. I can't feature this. Kids like to have sleepovers with their friends, not alone with arbitrary adults. How does this keep happening?

Priests that molest children should be defrocked and turned over to the authorities. Bishops that cover up for priests that molest children should be stripped of their titles and banished to remote monasteries to meditate for the rest of their lives.

And yes, if the Pope is found to have covered up abuse ... him too. Nothing is further from the heart of Christ than abusing children.

It depends on the situation. I went to Catholic schools in the 80s including a Jesuit high school that had Fathers and Brothers who lived there. There was never so much as a peep in the rumor mill that any of them did anything even remotely inappropriate. They even sent out some letters to the alumni asking people to come forward if they had a problem, and they said that all they were aware of was one incident in the mid 70s.

OTOH, my mother went to Catholic schools in the 40s and 50s and the students had a list of priests and nuns to never be alone with.

Quite frankly, the Church has been bleeping bleepholes about the way they have handled the situation. But there are many many priests and brothers out there who are great people to be around. However, they didn't even allow students in the residential areas except for one day when you could take a tour to see if you wanted to be a priest. If a priest were to want to have my kid over for a sleepover, that would set off warning bells in my head.

How are they to know that the naked 14-year-old Laotian boy bleeding from his rectum isn't really the nice white guy's 19-year-old substance-abusing boyfriend? Or that they were supposed to run a background check on Dahmer...

/yeah, they screwed up. Big time...

I think columnist Dan Savage said once "When I was troubled by impure thoughts as a teenaged boy, I'd always talk to my gym coach or parish priest about it, and they would then have sex with me."

There were summer sleepovers at my old church, but in that situation, you had a bunch of kids spending the night in one of the large rec rooms.

That's absolutely correct. In fact I was just dropping in to let everyone know this tactic ("officer, pretty-please return my rape victim") is known as "Pulling a Dahmer," although in this case the gambit was unsuccessful. . .

Where are all the "Religion is just harmless fun, let us tell the children our stories (and touch their genitals)" crowd now?

Religion hurts children mentally and the church hurts them physically.

It is child abuse.

/Independent auditors going through the church's records and interviewing everyone would be a start. And I mean from the top down. The Vatican is considered a country, well it's a country who shelters sick criminals and the head of that country is aiding and abetting. Burn it down and start over.

Mog32Kupo: Where does the church pick up these people?!

I got a theory on this one. See, once upon a time I was a psychiatric social worker and a born-again christian. I got into these because I had a shiat-load of emotional junk, none of it pedo, just abuse, neglect, loss, garden variety suburban hell. I figured my experience gave me insight so I could be better at the one, and the other would "heal" me.

Turned out that at my program (very prestigious UC Berkeley), at least 1/2 the other students in my Masters program were FUBAR, I mean SERIOUS issues, most in denial, instead calling it life enriching experience and other BS. All of 'em pursuing this career out of a subconscious desire to "fix" themselves.

BTW, I don't do the psych work anymore. Nor am I a B.A. Christian.

See, folks have an issue and they see entering these professions as a way to fix it. The guy fights with his kid-touching urges and thinks (and hears from his clergy) "God can heal you, restore you, purify you." So if you have small issues, you heal it at the altar, prayer groups, whatever. But if you got BIG stuff, like you want to touch the children, well, that's some serious bad juju and you best devote your entire life to God if you want Him to bless you and heal you. Yes, every waking moment must be devoted to His service, ergo: Seminary and Priesthood. What could be more pleasing to God than that, what could better keep your filthy mind from your loathsome, deviant, sinful appetites than Total Immersion into His healing blood, water, spirit, oh baby.

Except as I discovered, there's no there there, and it doesn't make it go away. You gotta get into your own therapy for that. But that requires admitting it to the therapist, and that's just too goddamn painful for some folks. SO they kid themselves, they keep it clean for a while, but ultimately the old hunger returns. By that time they're entrenched. And by that time they've likely gained positions of trust. They've sublimated it long enough, expressed their affection for The Children in mostly appropriate ways...but ohhhh, they're so smooth and vulnerable, you just gotta have a taste, don't you, Padre? Sure you do. And since there's nobody there to stop 'em, the old appetite takes over and there you go.

THAT is my theory on how these shiatbags end up in the clergy.
