That phrase hasn't meant anything in the military for a long time.

In the Marine Corps, "Special Operations Capable" just means "we can put grunts in a helicopter".

Maybe there's something I don't know about Navy protocol - can anyone tell me why that guy on the right is saluting with his left arm?

He's using a Bosun's whistle to announce the Commander on board ship. So he's saluting with his left hand.

Neither of those explanations make sense. His hand is too high to hold a whistle, and the sun is on the other side.

Well he violated the UCMJ. Adultery seems to be the one that brings em down. Had a base CO who was having an affair with another officer in his building not long after taking over the command. The both were out of a job within a few weeks. This CO was a well respected officer in his circle too.

Er, I should say... too high to hold a whistle with his left hand. Looks like he is holding a whistle with his right... but wouldn't that be odd? Hold with left, and solute with right.

mootmah: When did we stop making sure that captains of our warships were actual, farking Captains (Eagle grasping arrows)?

All right, I'll bite.

Captain is both a Naval rank (above full commander) and a role.

On smaller ships, the Captain of the Ship can be of almost any rank up to, well, Captain.
For example, when Jug Ears was doing his time in the Royal Navy, he was the Captain of a ?Minesweeper? while holding the rank of Lieutenant.
Following a lieutenant's course at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, The Prince was given command of his own ship, the minehunter HMS Bronington, for the final ten months of his active service in the Royal Navy ending on 15th December 1976.

When the visitor's head appears at the level of the quarterdeck (or when he reaches a designated point on the brow or accommodation ladder), the boatswain's mate begins piping "Over the Side" and he, the sideboys, and all other persons on the quarterdeck salute. If the boatswain's mate uses his right hand to hold the call (pipe), he may salute left-handed.

The Navy should mind it's own Farking business!

I had an uncle who was married in the 60's and in the navy. His wife ran up a bunch of bills at home she wouldn't pay and he didn't know anything about, he was stripped of rank, given time in the brig and then booted from the Navy. Well, that was the family's story anyway.

I sincerely hope this is a troll. But I'm tired and bored so I'll answer. People who do dumb things like have affairs and fake their own deaths in their personal life are wide open to manipulation and extortion. You definitely don't want that in a ship captain.
