FTFA: The new report backs up a claim made in May by Nielsen that also said smartphone penetration had crossed the 50% mark.

Why is this such a big revelation? Most people have phones. There's really no real reason to have a land line and I would imagine most mobile phones are smart phones. So, yeah.

Then that doesn't mean everyone has to walk around using them like they're the farking zombies in Dawn of the Dead.

I'm surprised by how many places my cell phone works. It's nice to be able to use Fark from the basement bathroom at work while I poop.

Perhaps the wrong place to ask this, but I'm searching for a simple flip phone with good reception, slim profile and high quality audio pickup. Can anyone suggest a device?

These smartphone devices are unnecessarily bulky for my purposes. Combined with my deep and enduring hate for anything apple, I'm not left with too many options.

I owned an idiot phone for a long time, and I loved it! But my family offered to get me a smart phone for my birthday and I couldn't say no. It's pretty handy. Wireless hotspot and unlimited data FTW!

I'd like to second both of these. I work a call center, and can tell on my caller ID when someone's calling from a cellphone... over half of the cellular calls I get are badly-garbled/intermittent/static-y/prone to cut-out... never had that problem with my phone. ...and people, when I can't hear you, that doesn't mean yell louder; it means stop using speaker phone from 10 feet away.

Half of Americans have smartphones? The economy must not be as bad as everyone makes it out to be, seeing as they are luxury items.

Yeah I went there. Still a pretty high percentage.

I've got an LG Dare that everyone makes fun of me for. I rarely make calls or text, which is what it is good for.
I have the means to get and pay for a smart phone, but I don't feel like I'm missing anything not being connected to the internet 24/7.
I guess I should point out that I'm in my 30s and married with no kids and no Facebook account. But my wife MUST have the latest phone as soon as it comes out and has an iv constantly injecting her with Facebook.
My phone cost me $50 in 2008 and I pay $40 a month. The battery lasts about a week and a half with my usual usage even at this age.

Welcome to the club, America!

First smart-phone I ever had was in 1997, a Nokia 9000... It was pretty smart, but big and heavy - though no more so than the day books and filofaxs everyone else carried around !

Nothing wrong not having a smart phone if you just want your phone to make calls and send texts. And the big advantage is the battery life is much better.

This is what I use. I'm not a big fan of texting and I don't make many phone calls. My phone of choice just keeps me in basic contact with the world, outside of my laptop.

Mine is almost entirely a business write off; you'd be amazed at how often random ebay buyers will send me messages at 2 am for some reason; about half of those are even in my time zone or close, not just the odd European.

I sure as hell couldn't afford to have one for day to day use otherwise. Too bad my business isn't really doing much besides paying the bills; I'm going to have to downgrade again whenever I dissolve it.

Considering the modern smart phone didn't exist until 5 years ago - its an extremely rapid pace of adoption. And even getting rid of the landline didn't reach popular acceptance until a couple of years ago.

/haven't had a landline since 1999

My old razr could get good quality reception practically everywhere including basements and the middle of nowhere upstate NY. But I had verizon, so that might have something to do with it.

Inspired by the article, I would have gone with a headline like:

Smartphone penetration has crossed the 50% mark for the first time in the U.S., 100% in some interesting X-rays

But that's me.

Oh, the other thing I was going to say is, the no-reception thing is absolutely true. Even though Verizon actually has pretty good coverage out here in the 'boonies' of NY, I can still find pockets (mostly in valleys) where there is no reception at all. We go camping at Allegany State Park and once you leave the highway, the proximity to the national forest means there is NO reception unless you're on the high ridges. I'm actually fine with that though; it was nice to mostly get away from things.

When I was in WI/MN/ND/MT last summer, even with my dumb-phone, there were stretches with no service, which would have been less fun if we'd had car troubles. Because there's also nothing THERE except for the small cities you'll see on the maps along major routes. We almost ran out of gas at one point because our eastern version of 'eh we'll get gas when we just need a gallon or two' almost stranded us between points of civilization.
