The Russians might want to google the Battle of Tsushima Strait, you want to Google that. Also if you ever get a chance, the IJN Mikasa is in excellent condition and a lovely tour.

IIRC the Soviets didn't declare war against Japan until 1945. Then backed way the fark off.

Had they been a winning party of WWII or even a party that managed a negotiated peace rather than an unconditional surrender, they would have gained territories. They lost and unconditionally surrendered... territory is usually lost when that happens. Okinawa
