lomnoir: I still want to see pictures of the Martian night sky.

Why? It will look *EXACTLY* like a moonless night on Earth. All of the familiar constellations will be there.

naw, it's where the sound stage doors exit signs are.

I bet the new conspiracy will be that the images look so much like places on Earth that there will be curiositiers claiming the mission is faked.

There's more to the night sky than the constellations. For starters, I'd like to see Earth at superior/inferior conjuction and Jupiter at opposition.

I suspect you'd be underwhelmed. Mars Pathfinder images of Phobos and Deimos:

mars.jpl.nasa.gov

From the surface of Mars, they aren't nearly as big or bright as our moon. Seems to me it would be like watching a very, very bright International Space Station going overhead. Cool, of course, but nothing to write home about.

You'd need a decent telescope for that.

What's that vertical shaped thing in the top right? On the horizon by the crater rim? It looks like...a STREETLIGHT.

Those mountains in the background look like they come from an early '90s video game.

I wonder if those are the dunes they talked about not wanting to land in.

One of the fun things about this mission is that we know so little about Mars that the schedule sounds pretty malleable. I distinctly remember a press conference after landing where the science team lead basically said that we're going to wait for the engineers to do their validation, and once we get some awesome high-res photos back we're going to decide what looks the most science-y.

//Also, this my second green

it looks like water erosion in the background, also.

there is a rock that looks like a fish lower left corner of top left black spot -- sup with that?

I saw that too, and that's exactly what it looks like, standing water from a spring or run off.

Of course if you scroll to the far left, there's clearly a trash can visible. Maybe they messed up a posted a photo of their summer vacation at Joshua Tree National Park?

I created a program to compare landmarks I noticed in the Curiosity pictures and had it search google earth for a similar set of landmarks here. It is official and documented the real pictures were taken 100 yards south of the giant jellybean in Chicago.

It's an inhospitable wasteland not suitable for life. That's why we send rovers.

I remember as a kid laughing at old episodes of Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and other shows, saying "That looks nothing like another planet. That looks like the Southern California desert. What a joke." Let me take this moment to say to all the mid-century low budget sci-fi TV shows, I owe you all a huge apology. You were right, I was wrong.

Yeah, they're tiny in comparison to our moons. But get close (65 miles) and they're pretty sweet!
