(Townhall)   Have the left and Democratic Party sufficiently weakened the character of enough Americans to enable the demonization of Paul Ryan to lead Barack Obama to victory?   ( divider line

What normally weakens my character is Grey Goose and busty Asian strippers, so...anytime you wanna make that happen, Obama/Biden, my vote is assuredly for sale.

The Ryan plan doesn't get rid of Medicare in the same way Jeffrey Dahmer didn't get rid of those boys. He just reassigned them to a different area of the nitrogen cycle.

Sometimes I feel envious of Tea Baggers. I have to buy pot and alcohol to alter reality into a more comfortable and pleasurable state. These morons, on the other hand, get to have an alternate version of reality all for free.

rufus-t-firefly: You know that oak trees are often toppled in windstorms, right? The roots are just below the ground. They LOOK sturdy and impressive, then they crush your farking house. Even your trite phrases are failures.

On top of that (and everything else), that's not even how trees work. You hollow out a tree, it dies, the end.

Trees don't work.

Neither does the Romney/Ryan budget.

sigdiamond2000: Because the only thing in the world poor people hate more than rich people is other poor people.

Or, maybe, it's because people who actually believe in traditional values don't give them up just because of economic pressures. Liberals will do anything for a quick buck (like panhandling, stripping, playing crappy music, becoming hollywood actor) so it may be hard for them to understand but you can't buy an American Christian for any price.

Except tax cuts, of course.

OneTimed: why do poor people vote Republican

The short, snarky (but still relatively accurate) answer is "god, guns, gays, and Mexicans".

The longer answer is that a lot of democratic bigots got really angry at Lyndon Johnson for his Great Society legislation and fled to the republican party. Since then, the republican party and its racist Southern Strategy have capitalized on that lingering hatred (both from people who are still alive who actually made the switch and their offspring that they've taught their hatred to) by promising to stick it to "the liberals". They raise hell about how liberals are going to take away your guns (even though nobody has tried to pass any reasonable gun control legislation for more than two decades now), how the Mexicans are taking away your jobs (even though crops are rotting in the fields because people won't take the garbage jobs the immigrants that got deported were performing), how the gays are taking away the value of your marriage and how the atheists are taking away your religion (by asking you to stop forcing other people to practice it).

They've successfully exploited the rampant ignorance, racism and intellectual cowardice of the South to convince people that all their problems aren't caused by the rich, white business owners that keep shipping their jobs oversees, chipping away at their benefits and worker rights and keeping their salaries below GDP growth, but rather the fault of all their neighbors who are living in exactly the same conditions.

Toss in the fact they've been actively dismantling our educational system for twenty years, churning out batch after batch of incurious dolts with no critical thinking skills, they've taken almost complete control of the media and they're literally buying politicians into office at this point thanks to Citizen United and it's not hard to see how the GOP continues to win elections despite being so obviously hellbent on destroying America for greater than 90% of Americans.

Noticed this on the right gutter of the page. Too lulzy not to post.

What I find especially nice about that cartoon is the Biden's plan would have more positive effect on the US economy than Ryan's.

Bloody William: Weaver95: also - it's pretty telling that here we are not even a week into Ryan joining the Romney campaign and already we're being told to back off and stop beating up on the guy.

hmm. rather curious, that.

What a bunch of pussies.

These aren't even smears or attacks. Most of the complaints against Romney have been POINTING OUT WHAT THEY'VE DONE AND SAID.

That's the worst kind of lie! A true one!

I think the principles of the folks that the GOP have been backing willfully and with purpose, despite throwing the history and tenets of the Party of Lincoln have done that already.

If the party continues to back folks who actively want to limit the rights of citizens, who look out for the rights of corporate citizens over the rights of flesh and blood citizens, who only see "freedom of religion" to mean "freedom to be a Christian" and who throw away Teddy Roosevelt's concern over the environment and responsibility of the nation to secure and preserve our national resources for future generations, then it pretty much has not just weakened the character of the nation, but sucked the marrow from the bones...

You want to preserve the sanctity of marriage, perhaps we should stop supporting serial philanderers and folks who see affairs as normal business, and stop apologizing for hate mongers who desperately want to shed the "stigma" of their being gay by tearing down the rights of their fellow citizens. If we want to secure a better financial future for the nation, perhaps we need to support entrepreneurship as opposed to tearing down competition for all but our largest of businesses, and stop this maniacal War on Drugs that only keeps competition from the market, and fuels a prison industry. Perhaps we might be better off NOT extending power in brush fire undeclared wars across the world, and focus on building relationships with nations and building bridges between folks who the nation has actively stomped on when they got the idea that maybe governing themselves was a better idea than backing ideologues.

The leadership of the Republican Party has eroded more of our character than anything that the Democrats have done, and yet folks who scream for "MOAR PRINCIPLES" have yet to turn that ire on the folks who keep at it, and then wrap themselves in flag and church to justify it.

Just a thought.
