FTFA: "If one child is scared, that's enough. And that's unacceptable"

Oh noes...a snowflake is "scared" by an off handed comment by a frustrated teacher in an unruly classroom full of 12 year olds.

SHUT

DOWN

EVERYTHING!!!

Are these people actually serious here? Should the teacher been a bit more careful about his choice of words? Yes. Should the School's Principal and maybe the District Superintendent have looked into the matter? You betcha...But wasting the Court's time and money? This was really worth prosecuting? This was worth police time, money and effort? Police resources couldn't have been better utilized in solving real crimes? I mean yeah, pull the the teacher aside, and tell him to knock it off...but actually filing criminal charges? REALLY?

If the teacher had said that he would fail all the kids if they did not settle down, would that have brought criminal charges as well? No? Why not? I am sure one or two kids would have been "scared" about failing a class.

Farking ridiculous PC culture we live in. Astounding that an off handed comment made in a moment of frustration now a days can lead to full blown criminal charges and time in court with a possibility of facing actual time in prison.

Remember Citizen, thinking about crime or discussing the fantasy of a crime is a crime.

Yup.

Stupid comment by the teacher, dumber reaction.

I'm pretty sure that, while teaching, I have said things along the lines of, "If nobody knows the answer to this question, I will kill you all."

Now, granted, I teach at a university and all of my students are adults. But they know I'm not serious, and nobody's ever complained that they thought I was actually threatening anyone.

It sounds like that's pretty much what this teacher did. I don't buy that any single student felt not-safe or thought it was a serious threat. It's much more likely that one or more of his students are vile little shiats who are doing this because they think it's hilarious to ruin a teacher's life.

Way back when I was in high school, a teacher said, in response to a bunch of students being loud in the hallway, "Man, some days I wish I could just bring my gun to school". We were rightly surprised, but we never complained. He went and told the principal what he'd said, and then whatever discipline was handed down was between the two of them. He kept on teaching, and we didn't notice anything different.

No kidding. That's a $16k to $20K for a transferable M-16, plus $200 tax stamp and 9 month wait for the BATFE to check the buyer out. The seller sure as hell isn't going to let go of it until he has a fully signed Form 4 with tax stamp stuck to it, with the serial number of the firearm written over the stamp, because he doesn't want the trail coming back to him if something goes weird and because it is MEGA-FELONY to transfer a M-16 without the receiver having paid the tax.

Or... maybe the teacher knows dick-all about firearms, and confuses a M-16 with an AR-15 (just like the anti-gun groups intended), doesn't know anything about how one legally procures a firearm, and we can just hope that if he does find a way to get a gun, he he doesn't know how to use the sights well enough to hit anything beyond 25 feet.

Exactly. The hyperbole makes it clear that the comment is out of frustration, meant to convey the teacher's anger, not their actual planned actions. It would actually be more threatening to say "If you don't shut up, I'm going to start slapping you kids."

I hope the poor man comes to his senses and does the right thing.

An M-16 makes a terrible rooftop weapon. He needs to take an M-14. Oh sure there's more recoil and muzzle rise but those bullets will go through window glass and wooden walls with no path alteration at all.

The guy has to be crazy. An M-16? He needs a real good sedagive.

FTA: According to Assistant District Attorney Michael Madigan, Mason said something like, "I'm going to go on the roof with an M-16 and start shooting."

Context and tone of voice mean everything in this case.

Was he posing it as a hypothetical view of an insane person? Did the vehemence with which he said it make some students genuinely uncomfortable? Was he simply trying to portray how some sociopathic farkwits like the Columbine shooters might have felt?

I'm not a teacher, but I can imagine myself saying those exact words to a class if I was asking them to consider a hypothetical situation.

Barring any mechanical failure, an automatic firearm will continue to chamber and fire rounds for as long as the trigger is depressed and there is ammunition in the magazine.

Semiautomatic: 1 round fired per trigger pull.

Automatic: more than 1 round fired per trigger pull.

Automatic fires multiple rounds as long as you hold down the trigger. Semi-auto fires one round per trigger pull.

That's a deer hunting cartridge. Totally ineffective against people. For that you need something much more powerful, like a 5.56mm.

Automatic weapons require batteries (like a vibrator), where semi-auto weapons don't (like a dildo).

Nation of wimps.

I can remember my high school trig teacher saying that the only was we could have done worse on an exam was if he had lined us all up against a wall before the test, and shot us. And that he was tempted to do that very thing, now.

We laughed.

No law-suits. No arrests. No suspensions. No PTSD therapy. No hand-wringing by parents.

That is actualy a pretty damn good analogy. With the vibrator, you just hold it there. The dildo you have to work back and forth yourself.

Got meself in big trouble once because of something like this...

Reached the point where I'd HAD ENOUGH and made a comment that I was going to get a Super Soaker and 'go postal' all over the office with grape koolaid...and was smiling when I said this.

Next thing I know I'm suspended from work and have to go and get a psychiatric evaluation. Those cost plenty, but I figure "This wasn't my idea, so YOU can pay for it".
Surprisingly enough, the PTB decided that they didn't really want to shell out for a psych eval, so they'd settle for a note from my counselor
After my counselor (who knew me pretty well) got done laughing his ass off he told me not to worry about it.

Back at work a week later, with the lesson under my belt of "Some people not only have no sense of humor, but they are out to GET you as well."

Kept that in mind and had no more trouble...

Hey Englebert Slaptyback, over in the A&M thread I got to talking about my Mosin Nagants that you and trotsky coaxed me to buy. Here's a little, "Thanks, *you bastards*!" for opening the door to what is clearly going to become a new and *expensive* hobby!

As a teacher myself, I am often tempted to make comments of the sort addressed here. Thankfully I teach adults, who often have senses of humor.

What does worry me is that in my state now it's legal to carry weapons on campus - right up to the doors of any building. So a potential shooter could walk to within 50 feet of where I'm holding class carrying a 9mm without breaking the law, but I'm not allowed to conceal and carry to protect myself and my students from such a threat. This has actually kept me up at night, given the apparent direction of our culture.

Laws prohibiting possession of firearms in school buildings are necessary to prevent shootings. Shootings will not occur in schools if shooters are not legally able to carry firearms in such locations.
