I don't normally change my fb cover photos to stupid shiat but I had to make a quick one for Johnny. Sad he had to die while witnessing his beloved team eat a cockmeat sandwich.

My uncle Moe met Johnny about ten years ago or so in Fort Myers. Since my uncle passed, this pic has been by the door, next to the keys, greeting me every time I come in or go out. Absolutely one of my favorite pictures ever.

RIP Johnny, say hi to my uncle for me.

Shame that all the Sox players (Beckett and Lackey in particular) couldn't be more like Johnny Pesky.

RIP

Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky passes away at 92

I guess the last swing turned out to be a heart stopper.

This Mets fan got a little choked up when I heard about this.

Got to meet Johnny Pesky about 6 years ago at a Toys For Tots fundraiser in Winchester, NH. Even at 86 the guy was macking on every woman that came in (I should have taken notes). When I got to talk to him for a few moments I asked him a question my father wanted to know -Which Yankee pitcher was the hardest for him to hit against. He looked up at me, smiled and asked "You want them in alphabetical order son?". He laughed and said " Without a doubt, Allie Reynolds & Vic Raschi." Rest well Johnny, you were a cool dude

Jerkwater: This season is killing me as well.

Pats and (hopefully) the Bruins are right around the corners. That what keeps me going through these shiat months.

Godspeed, Pesky. I'm sorry you left this world when the Red Sox upper management were comprised of people that might at some point before their own demise be convicted of war crimes, and that a sizable percent of the fan base is more interested in singing along to "Sweet Caroline".

It's like a pre-2004 Sox season: "Oh well, we'll figure it out next year. Switch to the Pats coverage."

Just learned Derek Lowe is going to be pitching for the Yankees. Sonofabiatch.

Guess Bobby Doerr is the last one of the four now.

If you want a good read, grab THIS from the library. (new window).

I've read that and I'll second the plug for it. You don't have to be a Redsox fan as long as you are a fan of class, and men who knew what that meant.

RIP

Not a Red Sox fan, but indeed.

Hey... he did get to see 2004, though.

Crazy thing? He's not the oldest. Lou Lucier (born 15 days before Bobby) is the oldest living Red Sox player. Of course, Lucier also has 1,832 less games under his belt than Bobby, but still. (Pretty sure he was there in April too, FWIW).

No, that was the situation when Pesky started his career. The current Red Sox upper management are your basic garden-variety fark-ups, that's all.

Tom Yawkey and his cronies make Marge Schott look like Oprah.

Absolutely. It's like everyone in New England has forgotten how much worse things were before Henry & Co. took over. Yeah, the last few seasons have sucked, but it pales in comparison of the stupid bullshiat Sox fans used to have to put up with.

Josh Beckett killed Johnny Pesky!

Watching the 2004 team include him in all the victory shenanigans was one of the best parts of that championship.

Yawkey was just too nice, from everything I've ever read (save the integration issue, that's its own can of worms). When people talk about the cons of "family ownership" in a business, most of the qualities were embodied in him. "Bad" to me was the 90s with Duquette and the idiots of the JRY Trust that just completely farked up the team until Henry came along. (Not that Mrs. Yawkey was the best, but she was lucky enough to have Lou Gorman around when she was the owner.)

\in my dreams, Johnny told Beckett off in his last days... because Lord knows Beckett is everything Johnny wasn't

And in all this, he was part of the TV combo of Ken Coleman and Johnny Pesky, with Ned Martin and Jim Woods on the radio.

Very sad. With all the fark ups the Sox have had over the past few years, they got Johnny Pesky right. They treated him like a beloved family member and didn't do him wrong.

I got to go to the 100 year anniversary game. It was great to see him there. You could tell he wasn't doing well, but he was still as happy as always to be there.

RIP, Johnny. You'll be missed.

Demetrius: I got to go to the 100 year anniversary game.

Insanely jealous right now. Other than my uncle's picture, the closest I got to him was being there the night they announced his number would be retired - coincidentally, the night they clinched the 2008 Wild Card.

Is there any evidence that Johnny was upset about the latter part of your post, or is that just a personal beef of yours?

War crimes?

John Buck 41: Is there any evidence that Johnny was upset about the latter part of your post, or is that just a personal beef of yours?

More of a personal beef, but it's not the song nor the fact that fans sing it; that and other various "Fenway-isms" combined basically help create the idea that the Red Sox "brand" is an eternal, ever-flowing cash register that will never force the hand of ownership to make tough decisions.

And yeah, hyperbole aside, I hate Larry Lucchino especially that much. That motherf*cker would sabotage your career or mine in a heartbeat if floating any stories about us supposedly beating our wives or torturing children would create a favorable narrative for any amount of time.
