Wendy's Chili: Giltric: Dr_luckyz: I hate how ordinary these stories are becoming, very sad.

It's like missing white girl syndrome but for firearms crimes during an election cycle.

Notice it's usually the crazy white guy who gets all the coverage but not the black gangbanger who rapes and shoots a 90 year old woman?

Show us the "black gangbanger" who injures or kills 70 grandmas in a shooting spree, you pathetic, racist piece of shiat.

He might get one or two grannies but then the flying hot grease would engulf him from all directions.

Dimensio: Unconfirmed speculation regarding an event for which few meaningful details have been released justified imposition of new gun control laws such as a 1000% taxation on ammunition purchases and prohibiting civilian ownership of a very rarely criminally class of firearms by arbitrarily classifying them as "assault weapons". Additionally, this vaguely reported incident justifies claiming that shootings are becoming commonplace despite violent crime rates in recent years being substantially lower than violent crime rates twenty years ago.

You forgot to attribute made up quotes to people with your vague, useless platitudes.

Seriously though, aside from the access to guns, the common thread in all of these stories is some guy slipped through the cracks of an overburdened mental health system.

We have to accept that there are some people that will be institutionalized for life due to their problems. It's not their fault, but trying to mainstream insane people by giving them drugs that may or may not work and then relying on them to actually take the meds religiously?!?

That wasn't a shooting.
Chuck Norris sneezed and the bystanders were injured by the shrapnel ejected from his nose.

Gun sales went up 40% the weekend after the Auora shooting. I am starting to think, much like the windshiled repair guys who spread rocks on our road, these are the result of the gun manufactures and/or ambulance companies.

letrole: The amusing thing here is the way that guns and politics are being blamed for spree shootings.

Spree shootings are caused by a lack of personal restraint. In some cases, such as Charles Whitmore, the fellow was suffering from madness with an organic cause ie a brain tumour. He left diaries and letters that showed jumbled and irrational thoughts.

But in nearly all cases, this lack of personal restraint comes from the breakdown of society.

1. If suicide is no longer a sin,
2. If public disobedience and and defiance against authority are glorified,
3. If fame or celebrity is rewarded without merit,
4. If Right and Wrong are no longer absolute,
5. If erratic behaviour is no longer shameful,
6. If internal or self justification is held as a virtue,

-- then it will all continue along this path until society completely collapses, and a new order reforms from the ashes

GTFO with that nonsense while the bodies are still warm.

They posted an "active shooter" warning on their website, much like a traffic accident alert on google maps or something.

This implies that there are maybe a lot of shooters out there, but they're only going to report on the active ones. Good jorb, Texas!

"The incident appears to have started on Fidelity Street near George Bush Drive not far from the A&M Former Student's Association building. The Eagle's police scanner picked up dispatchers saying that two officers were wounded"

I'd like to make a snarky comment but I'll wait until we can get just one weekday without a goddam shooting spree.

More than 20,000 Texans who receive state-funded mental health services would lose care under budget cuts proposed this week by the Department of State Health Services.

The agency - acting on an order from state leaders to reduce its 2012-13 budget by 10 percent - released a list this week of $245.9 million in proposed cuts. And while services across the agency were affected, mental health programs took the hardest hit - $134 million in proposed cuts.

RexTalionis: tallen702: Yeah.... right.... because automatic weapons are so inexpensive and any criminal can get their hands on them right?

There's mod kits for semi-automatic rifles. Some of them are as cheap as a piece of stamped metal.

Then again, it could be how journalists conflate all weapons with either a Glock or an AK-47.

Any "conversion device that will readily enable fully automatic operation of a firearm is itself regulated as a "machine gun" under the National Firearms Act of 1934. Such devices are not easily available to civilians.

Giltric: Texas, automatic weapon, barricaded in a house.

Were the cops serving a warrant on a violent offender or cartel member?

Wonder if it's one of those weapons that people didn't bother tracking from Holders Fast and Furious program.

College Station is over 300 miles away from Neuvo Laredo, the closest town if you take a straight shot into Mexico. I somehow doubt these were super-evil Eric Holder guns. They were probably legally purchased.

Even if it didn't stop one shooting It would probably save more lives in any case. Suicides heavily outnumber homicides committed with guns and access to mental health professionals is sorely lacking in the US

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: Elzar: God dammit - Obama is going to take our guns for sure. The only way to prevent this is to mandate all college students carry weapons.

REQUIRE that all gun owners pass three tests:
- weapon proficiency (being able to hit the target)
- gun safety
- psychological stability

Then I have no problem with arming the general population (those who pass all three tests)..

This would seem to me to fall under the "well-regulated" part of that pesky Second Amendment, so I'm sure our friends at the NRA would have no problem with it, right? RIGHT??

2012-08-13 03:01:46 PM

The GOP has been cutting mental health budgets for decades. They just assume you'll end up in prison, as so many do, and then they get treated there. But once their sentence is up, they can't keep their meds, and you fall back.

It's cheaper for the government and better for politicians pockets if they wait until the mentally ill commit a crime and send them to a privately owned prison.

You should be tapped to deliver the news to the shooting victims.

"your husband was shot in the line of duty, ma'am. He's gonna get an all expense paid trip to the best hospital in town and then a medal and 6-12 months off full pay." That should about cover it.
