Signs that a beaver may be rabid: foaming at the mouth, mistaking legs and cubscouts for trees, being pelted in every sense of the word, not giving a dam.

I shiat you not, today I was at the post office and the Burbank City Police have put up these giant yellow notices everywhere saying that if you are approached by a coyote, throw rocks at it until it leaves.

And? Making potentially dangerous wild animals feel less welcome around people is the smart thing to do, for the sake of people and the animals.

Why the fark would a rabid animal be in the water? I thought one of the symptoms was aquaphobia.

Also, what else were the scouts supposed to do? Trap it? Chemically euthanize it? Treat it for rabies? I think "kill it with fire rocks" is a pretty good snap decision. Merit badges all around!

Another name for rabies is "hydrophobia". The infected creature isn't really afraid of water, it's that it has muscular paralysis and can't swallow. That's why they "foam at the mouth". It becomes increasingly thirsty and when presented with water, becomes frantic because it's so thirsty and it can't drink.

Rabies is a perfect proof of the existence of a malevolent God, or at least one that hates mammals, because nothing so farked up could ever have evolved on its own.

Not a single kid had a jack knife? That's not good scouting, use a long stick and some twine to tie your knife at the end and jab that beaver right in the neck. That'll get you some badges I bet.

When I was in boy scouts 40 years ago we would have had .22 rifles and pistols to work on merit badges and blown the beaver to bits.

No, hydrophobia is the term used when referring rabies. In later stages of rabies the victim has difficulty swallowing and shows panic when offered liquids to drink.

Aquaphobia is a persistent and abnormal fear of water. It's an anxiety disorder, as are most phobias, not a disease caused by a virus or bacteria. Rabies is caused by a virus.
