Sylvia_Bandersnatch: In a 'making of' reel, a couple of the actors talk about how they were coached and drilled in how to pronounce it properly, but realised they really never would. In the end, this is okay, though. This is an English-language show, made for an English-language audience. The Chinese only needs to *sound* authentic -- to anglophones. Chinese is very difficult for most Westerners to learn, unlike the Latin- and Nordic-Germanic languages that are much more closely related to English. It takes years of serious dedicated study. That's a lot to ask of actors who already have a lot of their plate. This wasn't an Oscar shot, and not really even an Emmy shot. More, the show is almost entirely allegorical rather than literal; it's a Western, in space, in the future, but it's mostly about our present and past, the same way the original Star Trek was. If you parse it out rationally, it actually makes almost no sense at all. But that's not the point of it. So it's not actually important if the Chinese is correct for viewers fluent in Chinese, any more than it's important for the cartoonish ship's engine to make sense to an engineer.

I guess that's true.

But what compounds the horrible is the fact that Nathan Fillion has the worst Chinese in the history of white people speaking Chinese. And he persists on flaying the language alive on Castle, as if it's his personal joke.

Or rather, someone told him his Chinese was actually really good as something of a mean-spirited joke and no one has had the heart to tell him it's awful in a decade.

Oh man, I almost forgot about Villains/Seeing Red. I always want to think of those as just one episode though. Tara dying was almost as bad as Fred dying =(.

/bored now.

Did anyone mention that this list fails without "Objects in Space"

Maybe it's just me, but I found Buffy one of the least interesting characters on the show. Willow, Anya, Faith, Giles, Spike....all infinitely more interesting than Buffy, especially after Season 4.

Then again I also enjoyed Dollhouse so maybe there's just something wrong with my brain.

Imperious Rex!: Maybe it's just me, but I found Buffy one of the least interesting characters on the show

Its not just you. Sometimes I wonder if Joss made her a bit cardboard and predictable BECAUSE she is the hero. She is the embodiment of The Hero, or The One. The story needs her to act a certain way so the audience is comfortable and in familiar territory. The supporting cast can be for fun and games and heart and soul, but The Hero needs to play to the archetype. This might be true in Angel's case as well.

Mal is playing the role of the loveable rogue, so he gets to have a personality.

I don't know, I like Angel as a character even after he got his own show. I actually thought Buffy was a bit of a biatch most of the time, and most of the time for no good reason.

I can't speak to Firefly, I just couldn't get past the first few episodes. I did like Serenity though, so please no flaying.

Buffy has two modes: She has to nut up and save the world... again. Or she goes boo-hoo in a corner before nutting up and saving the world. Because she is "The One" these are pretty much the only two choices a writer has for a character like that. I can only think of a few episodes where Buffy is allowed to act like a person rather than an archetype. The Body being one of them.

Except for the guys who played Giles and Spike, the actors on the shows were very mediocre.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: "-I was not at all prepared for the Kaylee sex scene."

How? I'd been ready since episode one.

I am glad to know I am not the only one who has an unhealthy obsession with that scene.

Seth'n'Spectrum: IlGreven: Eh, I liked "Ariel" and "Trash" best, for the same reason.

Ariel and Trash were definitely two of the best.

qorkfiend: The best part about Firefly was the fluent cursing...in Chinese.

You're kidding, right? It's like they didn't even bother to hire a Chinese coach. That was the one thing that broke my immersion in that show.

You're upset that 400-500 years from now in another solar system casual cursing doesn't sound like perfect modern day chinese?

You didn't read all of them closely. It also isn't a troll. They just had a 10 year reunion for the 1/2 season show that was Firefly. Loved the show, but even I can say it's time to let it go.

I never watched Buffy because I thought it would be like the movie, which I thought was shiat. I may have to go to Netflix and see what the big deal is.

/was also late to the party in Firefly.

They're pretty different, in many ways, mostly stylistically. Whedon wrote the film, but had no control over it after that, so it's very different than he'd wanted it to be. The film was played almost as farce, but Whedon had intended it to be much more like the show, more serious a lot of the time. The concept, as he explained it, is an analogue of the high school experience, and this is much more evident in the show. Mostly, though, he was just sick of the jock-saves-the-girl trope, and wanted a kick-ass girl for a change. We're with ya, Joss.

They're fluent in Chinese like Jayne is fluent in English.

srtpointman: I never watched Buffy

The first season takes a while to warm up. I'd recommend you watch the episode "Hush" (season 4 ep 10). You don't really need much back story, its just to see if you like the show. If you like that episode, watch the rest. If you don't then don't bother.

Out of Gas is probably my favorite episode ever. I have a HUGE hard-on for in media res in general, and the flashback segues are really well done. It is just a really well written episode. Even the dangerously verging on deus ex machina ending didn't turn me off.

The first season is a bit below par in production values, but still very much worth watching. S2 and S3 are great.

When Firefly was on first run I had not heard of it. I came across this episode while flipping channels ... it was very strange and did not hook me.

Since then I did get hooked and, yes, this is one of the best episodes.

timujin: "The Message" is probably my least favorite Firefly episode, that guy was weak and whiny. Out of Gas was cool, but it's gotta be Objects in Space FTW.

It comes about 15 comments in. You must have missed it.

Firefly- I think I might just be one of the few that doesn't mind Heart of Gold. I like it more than The Message, Safe, and Bushwacked, anyways. While I get the love for Out of Gas and Objects in Space, Ariel is close to the top of my list. It's both a great heist, and has the outstanding Jayne scene at the end.

Heart of Gold has one of Mal's classic lines: "Well, lady, I must say, you're my kind of stupid"

And who can forget Jayne's first reaction to the whorehouse: "Whoo! My John Thomas is about to pop off and fly around the room, there's so much tasty in here."

Some others that people haven't mentioned:

Buffy

Passion - S2 (Jenny Calendar dies and we definitely see that Angelus is your typical all hat.no cattle villain)
Earshot - S3
Band Candy - S3
Empye Places - Xander rocks the eye patch

Angel

Hero S1E9 (You think I'd know that no one is safe with JW at the helm)
Epiphany S2E16
Carpe Noctem S3E4
Forgiving S3E17) Pissed "good" Angel is a lot more direct than Angelus
Deep Down S4E1 (Amy Acker can stun me any day and I would love the opportunity to disappoint S Romanov)
Awakening/Soulless S4E11/12 - Love the twist with Awakening and loves me some Angelus

Anyways, that's my 2 cents

I've always been partial to "Our Mrs Reynolds" as a favorite, but then again, that's more of a "first among equals" kinda deal because I love all of Firefly. "Out of Gas" "Objects in space" and definitely all the others.

"Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

"Jayne, go play with your rainstick."
