abb3w: Maybe be evil and simply book both Romeny and Obama for an interview in the same time slot, then do a gotcha on them....

That would be epic, and probably immediately followed by a petulant Romney walking offstage.

Good choice MT @AnnieLowrey: CNN's Candy Crowley to be the first female presidential debate moderator since ABC's' Carole Simpson in 1992.

Wasn't Gwen Ifil more recent than that?

Did she do the VP debate?

Ah. Got it. Maybe it was on SNL that she was asking questions of the candidates.

I'd prefer this woman:

"Yeah, you want to go ahead and run that sh*storm of a word salad by me again? I'm pretty sure that's not what I asked you."

Yeah. Her. Thats a good pick.

mrshowrules: She's as straight shooter. She's like a less smarmy version of John King.

john king is a GOP enabler who's angling for a fox news gig. he's a terrible, terrible debate moderator. during the primaries, he let so many bullshiat answers go past without challenging them, it was embarrassing.

2012-08-13 02:58:10 PM
Who did Candy Crowley eat to get that gig?

2012-08-13 02:58:45 PM
I want to see a debate with Colbert and Stewart moderating.

At min, Biden and Ryan should appear on Colbert together for a mini-debate.

2012-08-13 03:02:19 PM

incendi: Party Boy: Limeys do a better job of that.

I would love it if we adopted something similar to "the Prime Minister's Questions" here for the President to answer to the Senate. It'd be too much of a ruckus to do it in the House.

F that. The ruckus is the best part.

What's the Wu-Tang Clan up to lately? I hear they specialize in bringin' da' motherfarkin' ruckus and in diversfying their funds...

She did the VP debate. And I came in here to express my sadness that Gwen didn't get chosen. She was by far the best moderator last time imo.

You think there's a chance in hell Romney or Ryan would do an interview with Stewart or Colbert? Hah.

Hmmmm. Too bad there are no established formats for debates that would eliminate the posturing and avoidance of politicians.

No kidding. Let's bring Lyse Doucet over from the BBC, and giver her the ability to ask as many followup questions as she sees fit to actually get questions answered.

The SS might catch that one first. "Wait, unit bravo, say again? You're going to be where on the 17th?"

Or that night, one side is going to report there's a bunch of fake secret service guys wandering around and someone's getting arrested...

Let them ask questions of each other. And possibly give them each one free punch.

This is what I'd like to see. The moderator would still be there, and he would set the parameters for general topics - 15 minutes on the budget deficit, for example. Then you let them ask each other questions.

Romney would say no...because he'd fold under questioning.

I was hoping to see one of the debates moderated by IBM's Watson, that would interpret the candidate's speeches in real-time and blast sirens and spinny red lights every time a candidate lied.

2012-08-13 03:25:12 PM
I'll have some homemade blackberry hooch ready for at least one of these debates, plus a lot of beer.

I'm already planning on calling in sick the day after.

CommieTaoist: If Ryan winks I'm going to lose it.

That would put me on the floor. Man, one thing that bugged me about the debates last time is how often "Joe the plumber....Joe six pack...Joe Etc" was brought up. Maybe because my name's Joe.

I would love to hear some hard hitting questions. Like, for Obama - why haven't you released your college transcripts?

for Romney - Why do you adhere to a religion founded by a false prophet?

Only Teabaggers care about College records and religious mumbo jumbo.

Mr. President, I have only one question for you. Its a question that has been on my mind, and the minds of many Americans for a long time, and its a question that you have been asked again and again, and failed to answer.

Mr. President:

Where is your birth certificate? Where?

You never know he did agreed to an interview on MSNBC so it could happen.

what_now: . Raddatz, senior foreign affairs correspondent for ABC News, will ask questions of Joe Biden and Paul Ryan at the Oct. 11 vice presidential debate.

Joe Biden could do a pants off dance off and still win this debate.

Hardly. While I haven't see Ryan in a debate I believe he is smart, articulate and won't be intimidated by Biden.

Coco LaFemme: "President Obama, why did you campaign in 2008 as a liberal, when you never governed as one the last four years?"

He didn't. He ran as a moderate Republican. It was McCain and the news media who sold the notion that he was the liberalest liberal who ever libbed.

ManateeGag: anyone figure out how to resurrect Tim Russert yet?

This is a joke, right? Russert was terrible. His got'cha questions were puerile and he was a sycophant to the aristocracy.

So Softball Bob Schieffer will be lobbing a few practice balls at Romney? Hope he resists the urge to felate him on national television again.

"Governor Romney, your campaign has the momentum of a runaway locomotive. Why are you so popular?"

/just read from the card, honey.

I'd like to see the moderators given a button that will instantly cut a candidate's mike if the moderator feels he is getting off-topic.

2012-08-13 03:44:35 PM
I expect Romney to get his ass handed to him in the debates. In the primary debates and really throughout this race, he continues to be totally unprepared for questions he should have known were going to be asked, and he becomes flustered so easily.

2012-08-13 03:44:59 PM
Since when do moderators do that?

2012-08-13 03:45:04 PM
We just need a moderator equipped with a laptop googling the answers and also a "Bullshiat Klaxon" to blow every time someone lies.

Better yet, have a panel of people googling. Saves time.

Only problem with that is the media would immediately just start counting bs klaxons without ever providing context for them.

bullwrinkle: Hardly. While I haven't see Ryan in a debate I believe he is smart, articulate and won't be intimidated by Biden.

Yep. The VP debate will be very interesting. I think to educated people watching, Biden will walk away with it. However, Ryan will keep his cool and spout enough BS that the debate will be considered a draw. As entertaining as the debates will likely be, I'd love it if they would just let the candidates directly ask question back and forth, with the moderator just guiding the subject matter. Either that or at least have a moderator that's willing to say "that's not the question and has nothing to do with what I asked".

That's fine. It might even be better to distill the candidates down like that for the common man, the working stiff... you know, morons.

thornhill: I expect Romney to get his ass handed to him in the debates. In the primary debates and really throughout this race, he continues to be totally unprepared for questions he should have known were going to be asked, and he becomes flustered so easily.

Damn near every interview I see with Romney goes the same way. The interviewer asks about Romney's history, or some controversial part of his platform, and the only response is "Obama has ruined the country and we need him to leave". He absolutely refuses to even defend his own policies or history.

Coco LaFemme: "President Obama, why did you campaign in 2008 as a liberal, when you never governed as one the last four years?"

Obama never campaigned as an extreme liberal; he ran as a mainstream Democrat.

Now, McCain and Palin accused him of being the most liberal lib that ever libbed, but that's not what he was saying at the time. If you were listening to them as opposed Obama that's not Obama's fault.

Romney: "Who gives a fark."

Candy Crowley? Really? That's the best they could get? If they were trying for a woman, I mean, I know they couldn't get someone overly outspoken even if it's someone like Rachel Maddow, but... what about, for example, Isha Sesay?

I vote for the candidate who spends the most time thanking people before he starts answering questions.

Well, that sucks on wheels.

You want to know how money works?

You think Obama campaigned as a liberal in 2008?

There's a reason those questions will not be asked and it's not the reason you are imagining.
