Jesus farking christ, I guess Keith Edwards spent most of his early days gnawing lead paint from the walls, because that's one of the few plausible explanations I have for that level of derp.

Good times.

This is a "media outlet" that spent WEEKS hoping that the United States would lose the chance to host the Olympics because it would embarrass Obama.

For those unwilling to click the link, here's the thrust of the article:

"August 13, 2012
46 Gold Medals - No Apologies
Keith Edwards

There's nothing in sports that quite compares to going head-to-head against another country's athletes in Olympic competition. It's us against them - America versus the world. Competition has always played a big part of what makes the United States of America the greatest and most powerful country in the world.

Unfortunately, the current President of the United States is pushing a socialist agenda with no room for true competition. In fact, you could say that president Obama has waged a war on competition. Share the wealth, equality for all, and you didn't build that are President Obama's war cries.

But unlike the Olympic flame that is put out at the conclusion of the games, America's competitive fire will never go out!"

You're welcome.

Isn't a war on something itself a competition?

The fact that the United States dominated the Olympics goes to show just how correct President Obama was when he talked about the the need for a strong infrastructure provided by a stable government in what Republicans have called his "You didn't build that" speech. The United States Olympic Committee provides the foundation which allows our athletes to train their hardest and give it their maximum personal effort to win gold.

The United States led all nations with 104 medals, including 46 golds. That's eight more golds and 16 overall than second-place China. Compare that to India, the second most populous nation on Earth with 1.2 billion people. The Indian Olympic Association doesn't build the same strong foundation that the USOC does. They sent 83 competitors to the games. What did they win? Six medals. Zero gold, two silver, four bronze.

Your argument also bolstered by the decline of the Russians and the rise of the Chinese in the Games.

All of China's medals are a direct result of Patriot Capitalist Job Creators off shoring jobs there.

Satanic_Hamster: Wait. I thought Obama ruined the Olympics buy not allowing the athletes to wear American flags and all the athletes hated America for going along with it.

No, that was before we came in with the most medals. Now that the athletes are winners, they can only be true blue 'Murricans who chose these games to stick it to the commu-social-islam that Obamao is forcing down our collective gullets.

Is that what it meant, American Thinker? I was watching a lot of coverage, more than I can remember in years past, and they big take away I had (based on commercials) is how heroic and giving US Corporations are when it comes to making Olympic dreams come true. They saved flooded towns, erected large screens for people in Podunkia, USA to watch, they gave a Coke and a smile to every athlete to help them get over the top. What they said to me regarding Olympians and their rise to make the games was "You didn't build that, your folks didn't build that, your country didn't build that, Corporate America built that!" What a bunch of jingoistic bullshiat.

'Competition'. Right.

Actually, Republicans seek captive markets that are required to pay them money, and to make policies that prevent anyone rising up from the ranks of the poor to challenge them.

All their chants about the 'Free Market' are ironic.

So there's no room for higher education, NCAA and title 9, athletic scholarships, etc being the cause for the skill and aptitude of those athletes wearing our colors?

Nope. Because that's socialism. Real athletes are bootstrappy.

Republicans only know hate, and its underlying seed, fear. They are cowards and backstabbers, and don't care if they are right about anything, as long as the people they fear (aka everyone else in the world) are proven wrong.

The Republican gatekeepers work like a sort of Maxwell's Demon. Things which don't match the continually shrinking GOP dogma are removed, one at a time, but nothing new is let in. Inevitably the GOP will be left with nothing at all to believe in, and its members will stand in an empty room, howling and bleating at each other and clawing at the walls, looking for just one single thing to hate in an otherwise empty universe. And at that point, when it is too late to ever be anything else, they will see how small and pathetic they really are.

Maybe because Obama expanded the role of the Olympics and now, through the wizardry of socialism, there are more medal-bearing events? Just spitballing, there can't be any solution that doesn't spring from his being history's greatest monster.

What is with these self-important losers?

Have you noticed that the people talking about how great competition and exceptionalism are as part of America's identity neither compete for anything of value nor demonstrate that they are exceptional in any good way?

This is retarded. The us and every other country can only send one basketball team, or one gymnastics team. Comparing that to 20 teams combined is farking stupid. If each US state sent a team you can bet the US would have almost every medal there is.

Overhearing a conversation from a co-worker, who apparently just got her fresh talking point order from Michael Berry:
US coming in first on medals is a bad thing because it's a victory for Obama.

Seems like the right wing hasn't decided yet fully if us coming in first is good or bad yet.

That is kind of misleading though since the Eu has 30ish countries while the USA is 1 country. meaning that in any single sport the EU could occupy 30 entries while the USA only gets one (assuming of course every country gets one spot). Would be more accurate if it included the number of athletes the EU nations sent then did total number of medals per athlete.
