"The picture includes a pixelated rover logo that JPL plans to incorporate into an augmented-reality "Virtual Rover" smartphone app."

Make sure to install that app, so when you find a rover you can point your smartphone at it and get the improved reality experience.

I wonder if they can publish 3D data so people can print out Mars landscapes at home? Seriously, that's a case when the shape IS the object...

Farktards who are inclined to such conspiracy theories deserve to be trolled. Anyone who thinks of that remark as a 'gaff' is just as much a farktard as the kooks who would actually seize on it.

Aren't there some moons of Jupiter that are relatively more colorful and exciting?

I figure it is only natural that people would doubt it. The extraterran images up til now have been of lesser quality so when something like this pops up it becomes easier to relate it to the Earth around us and not a retouched landscape of Mars.

As a side note I find it highly amusing when people joke about conspiracies that surround their work.

Yeah.... Its not like we have FIOS on Mars... sending that much data takes some doing. But there are a few new ones circulating around today.

From what I recall, they're only transmitting on the order of tens to hundreds of kbps currently and the full scale images are about 1-3 gigabits each. I believe they max out at 2 gbps but are slowly ramping up the data rates until they get there.

The NASA Sol 4 press conference on is here if you feel like watching it - they have more detail on how they're receiving images: Link

They're probably trying to shape the nature of the conspiracy; the more bullshiat you feed them and get them to spout later, the dumber they look. That way they can keep the real conspiracy from getting out. *Twilight Zone music*

Also, I guarantee the landscapes are going to end up as backgrounds to video games in short order, once more start trickling in, they're pretty awesome:

Much like the actual Mojave desert already looks like an alien landscape:

I'm thinking their are plans for a few of them, but it's much father a trip, with more radiation, and more expensive. Would be cool to see though, and i'm sure we'ed learn a crapton about the moon in question.
