While it probably wouldn't have made a difference, the penalty on Carl Pettersson was beyond retarded.

If I've just done several hours of yard work, or something else that had me outside in the sun for a long enough period of time where crashing on the couch with a beer the second I'm back indoors is in order, golf is an excellent choice of television programming for background white noise.

Agreed! But there are more than a few foolish golf rules that should be changed.

Meh, not a golf fan... but wasn't it apparent he was going to win pretty much a few holes into Sunday's round?

Agreed that the letter of the law is absurd sometimes, but what's a better alternative? Maybe stating it such that the impediment must prevent a "material" obstacle to the swing. But then that leaves a lot to interpretation as well.

Did you watch the British Open? Adam Scott was up 4 with 4 holes to play, and didn't even make a playoff

Tiger needs to go back to the escort service. There he will find his A-game.

I thought he finished with a 12 on the last hole?

All good... how much was Rory up though? Didn't he break some sort of record?

He won by 8 strokes, but he was only 2-3 up after 6 holes I think

It was not much of a tournament by the time he got to the back nine. He just played too good all day long, and Poulter ran out of steam.

That course looked fantastic, but I'm not sure it has the teeth to really make a competitive major. Unless the wind is blowing it can be had.

Need more gators.

He left his driving and putting skills with his mistress?

/He's afraid of his driver, and before long he'll be borrowing Adam Scott's long putter.

I was replying to another American: didn't want to lose anything to chance.

Hooray second ever greenlight!

I also didn't bother watching it, too busy with basketball medal game, modern pentathlon, boxing and closing ceremony. Usually I'm all over the majors but I'll make up for it during the Ryder Cup.

/Go Europe

I did watch it because A) it was a major and 2) F*#k USA basketball. I wanted them to lose.

And if you weren't a total prick, you could have watched both. I was up at 8 to watch on TNT, the 3rd round was nearing its conclusion at 10am when the basketball game started, and by the time the gold medal was being awarded, the final round was just getting underway.

The 2015 US Open will be similar - Chambers has some long junk, but it's fairly open and there aren't trees, it's another links-style layout. Except you can actually play bump-and-run shots at Chambers, the grass isn't that weird stuff they had on Kiawah. Should be fun to see creative shots from the pros. Place was hard and fast when I played there. They're going to be hoping for wind.

The 2017 US Open at Erin Hills will be another one like that, but Erin didn't seem as wide to me as Chambers (although it did have some very wide holes), and the undulation and elevation changes are pretty crazy. Not like the one par 3 at Chambers with the huge drop, but just really bumpy all over. They'll be hitting a lot of shots off of uneven lies. And there's definitely the long fescue there. Oh, and they actually have tees that stretch the place to over 8000 yards, so the USGA will have a lot of tee boxes to play with to make holes play totally different each day if they want.

When the wind was blowing at Kiawah it was probably one of the hardest courses they've played in a major (the second round was the highest scoring average at a major since '04 at Shinnecock, where the USGA effed things up so badly the greens were completely unfair and no one broke par that day).

I do like this trend of playing tournaments on courses open to the public.

I like that golf fans are worried that Rory just isn't as interesting as Tiger because the PGA's ratings were down. I heard Colin Blowhard posit this yesterday.

News flash, Blowhard: It was up aganst THE FRIGGIN' OLYMPIC GAMES. Lessee here: Watching a spectacle that goes on once every four years, or watch a golf event you can see every week (or, in the case of a major, four times a year). Tough choice.
