When I was in Missouri last time I shot mom and her 4 babies. I gutted and skinned the mom. She was tasty. The little ones were too small and pitched them in the woods. They were gone the next morning. Survival of the fittest. I got a 10/22. They have claws. I reach out 300 feet. They reach out 3 inches.

in Illinois, I live-trap them. Worse than possums or groundhogs.

Dear Europeans: while I've heard they're not really great tasting, they're edible. That means they cost as much as your preferred hunting method, which should be a lot cheaper than most European food prices as relayed by my BIL after living in Bavaria for a few years.

My only close encounter with them was here in Missouri last year during Halloween. There were 2 that liked to walk around the one guy's porch at night and they didn't seem to mind people being around either. Also, I have a friend in Arkansas with a raccoon as a pet.

invisbob: in Illinois, I live-trap them. Worse than possums or groundhogs.

Are you guys getting hit by the armadillo invasion yet? They have been farking dying all over the highways for the last couple summers here in Central MO

In Real America, we refer to those 'coons as varmints.

My suggestion is to start airing old episodes of Davy Crocket. That will solve the problem for a while. Of course, that might put the bear population at risk by 3 year olds.

So I live two blocks away from the Little Arkansas river here in Wichita in the cutesy neighborhood called riverside. Never in my life have I run into coonts living else where in town (including rural butler county), but when I moved to Riverside, they were a daily occurence.

I'll see them roam along Waco, rummaging through the garbage at night. One day, however, I was doing yard work and took a small break in my garage. This raccoon started wondering down the side walk, and up my drive way. Sternly I said "You better get your coon ass out of my property" whilst pointing down the street.

That coon stopped, turned around, and walked down the sidewalk to the end of the street, and turned the corner and walked the sidewalk on the other street.

The next day, he walked into my porch. I said nothing to him, just cleared my throat. He got the clue and walked across the street to terrorize my neighbors cat.

a number of British newspapers have taken to referring to the animals as "Nazi raccoons" as a result.

lol. It really doesn't take much for British newspapers to begin labelling stuff as "Nazi". Just a rumour.

They can become real pests if you feed them on a regular basis. Several years ago I learned the hard way not to leave food out for the feral cats in our neighborhood. Raccoons were coming onto our patio and eating all the food before the cats could get to it.

Cute, ruthless bandits.

Remember the raccoons I was talking about earlier...the ones that were eating the food I was putting out for the feral cats? The ones that showed up on our patio were a momma raccoon and her two babies. If you turned on the patio light they'd take off. Momma raccoon was huge yet she managed to get over the wooden fence incredibly fast.

There's no reason to pin this one on the Nazis.

I'm sure some fool introduced them because they thought they'd be fun to hunt (? really?) or they were originally brought for the fur potential, back when "raccoon coats" were the big fad; but though the Nazis were bad, dumbass people in general are even worse.

One suspects a deliberate ambiguity in your choice of terms. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The appropriately sensitive term is "Procyonid-American" which you will remember to use in the future if you hope to run for public office.

Oh, the babies were bold. They were too young to have any real fear of humans and they often would come over to the sliding glass patio door and peer in at us and stand up on their hind legs with their front paws on the glass door. Momma wasn't so trusting and kept her distance.

You heard wrong, they are quite tasty. Skin one adult coon. Cut into quarters and trim any visible fat. Boil to half cooked. Next dice an onion and place it and coon into crock pot. Cover with BBQ sauce and cook until meat falls off bones. Remove bones and serve on buns. Lie to guess and they will think there eating pork

"Killings will merely improve the living conditions for the remaining animals and they will multiply even faster," said Jorg Styrie of the Federal Animal Protection Association.

This doesn't really make sense, Yes, killing them will allow the ones you didn't kill to have less competition, but the statement makes it sound like raccoons are like the Hydra (chop off one head and 2 more will grow).

Weird that legend has it a Nazi introduced raccoons to Europe though. I didn't think Nazis like coons.

This. The official story: Some district forestry superintendent named von Berlepsch released two pairs of racoon in the Edersee area at the request of Rolf Haag, who owned that forest district, in 1934. Haag just wanted another huntable species in his district. I live not too far from this area and yes, they are a real butthurt for the people in northern Hesse.

I work as a security guard for a gated community - as the graveyard shift rear gate guy. I spend all my time playing games and Farking.

So my attention is usually focused on my laptop, with additional focus for anything moving, oncoming, and the sides are relegated to... about third priority for noticing.

One night (A few weeks ago), I happen to sense movement to the side. I turn and look - and there's a big-ass raccoon, larger than two of my 12lb cats combined, sitting there, looking at me.

I made a noise and shook ... I dunno. Coon must have felt not very threatened, because he slowly walked away. no big rush. I was watching him for about a half hour, rooting around outside looking for food.

I was half tempted to feed him, but A) I had nothing but my own food and not much of it, and B) That is the worst thing you can do.

Contact your local UKC coonhound club and invite them out for a weekend of pest removal. The dogs are incredibly efficient; tell them they can take as many coons as they can find, and they'll probably be all about it. Hunting a new area will be a big enough draw in itself. Heck, I bet they'll even take you with them - I've been to numerous hunts with UKC people, even when I didn't have a dog with me. Coon hunting is a fun thing to do - its amazing to watch the dogs work.

/Assuming, of course, that you will let a couple of good ole boys and their dogs run around on your property at night despite liability issues.
//and that you're not violating any local game laws

That is a really good idea. The Huntmaster at the club knows the applicable laws for his state and they would really enjoy hunting new land. (Hopefully it is more than an acre or two or smack dab next to a residential area~dogs can't read signs very well you know)..The hunters are not going to destroy anything and will take very good care of the property because they want to be invited back in the future. The amount of land available to hunting is shrinking every year. they WILL appreciate the opportunity to hunt there.
We have raised and hunt Treeing Walker Coonhounds, Best dogs ever!
