There are few things more obnoxious than idiots bleating on about trivial shiat ruining their precious property values....

...wait. Seminole Heights? The one in Tampa? LOL.

Ahh yes, the conservative capitalism double standard. When it works for them, they protect it like the sanctity of a 18 year old blonde girl's virgin arse; when it doesn't, they don't give it a used condom's second thought.

But it's a Fortune 500 company! Why wouldn't they want that in their neighborhood?

Instead of the fifth Dollar Family, can't they just get a rock-bottom Chinese buffet instead?

Let's let the invisible hand of the free market decide where these job creators open their new stores.

If all you can afford to spend is a dollar, you better be within walking range.

/And with the quality food you can buy for a dollar, the "walking radius" just gets smaller and smaller.

There is no way to justify that many dollar stores in one place unless you have a similar number of Pawn Shop+Payday Advance businesses around there as well.

I suspect that the retired people in Florida think opening a Family Dollar store is a nice way start a business on the cheap.

Of course they are correct. Look at the statistics: Family Dollar has continued to open stores across the country for the past several years, and housing values have been falling nationwide since.

There are 5 Dollar Generals between my work and my home. I think 2 Fred's, 2 Family Dollars, and even a Dollar Tree as well.

I suspect someome is attempting to manipulate the market value of real estate.

I suspect with all the Big Box stores opening up by the interstate a lot of old strip malls are renting out store fronts dirt cheap. You can start a Family Dollar store cheaply.

Four small businesses were evicted to make way for the Dollar General. I'm assuming these weren't check cashing joints, ripoff convenience stores, or whatever else is on the bottom rung of local businesses.

We have one of them there Dollar Stores in my town, I get some cheap crap there. I also post on Fark regularly. You all better move on out, I'm probably driving down the value of the Fark thread that you'd also like to post in.

Apparently the neighborhood has an "Official Unofficial Blog". Well worth a read (pops) of the comments.

Let's call it what it is: All the talk of property values is nothing but dog-whistling. Lots of scared, racist white people pretending to be something other than scared, racist white people -- because apparently only poor black folks shop at Family Dollar.

Wife and I live in a pretty standard-issue middle-class neighborhood, and we don't have a dollar store nearby, but I really couldn't care less about whether they move in or not. In fact, I'd prefer Family Dollar to the horror that is Wal-Mart. At least with the former, the footprint is small, and I wouldn't have to deal with white trash by the thousands coming in from miles out clogging up the roads with their brodozers.

Also, y'know what's good for property values? Not living in Tampa.

I used to manage a Family Dollar. In the middle of the highest crime area in Orlando. (Crime) Hills. Pine Hills. I was hired and trained to run a brand new store that was put in a strip center where a wonderful thrift shop used to be. It was a big store. Remodeled and all shiny and new. Within six months I quit. The locals continuously trashed the place. I was payed good money-about 60k-and then I hired a team of people that they only paid minimum wage to. I was given a budget to staff the store with only two people + me. Imagine 50 thousand square feet and three people to maintain it. The locals had no respect for the place. They would fill shopping carts and abandon them. Or constantly relocate merchandise when they decided not to buy it. I had a scammer execute a slip and fall. And I was under constant threat of robbery. We did not even take credit cards. Only cash and debit. You damn right I was packing. On the busiest nights I would be sitting on 5-8k in cash! I left after our sister store about a mile away got robbed and one of the employees got shot. Worst job I ever had. I have never set foot in a Family Dollar again. My exit interview was a blast though.

The obsession over trivial things affecting property values - is that a Westernized Nation/First World Suburban thing in general or more specific to white, Suburban America?

Yep. "Woodrow Smits" is a well-known pseudonym for corporate schills.

I never heard the term brodozer before so I did an image search. I live in a pretty redneck area and I have never seen anything as stupid as the brodozer before. My, how I am glad I left Florida behind.

Sounds like a small city near where I grew up. The place has been on the decline for a long time after the industries that kept it booming into the 80s all went away. A few years ago I started noticing more and more dollar stores every time I went back to visit. Now I see them every couple of blocks. They're like Starbucks in more prosperous areas where people buy $4 coffee instead of $1 everything.

People who never cared about properties values before suddenly started caring about them once they found themselves underwater with their mortgage. Its amazing what selling your home for 75k less than what you have left to pay on you loan will do to your perspective.

Yes, and I'm sure that happened because the Family Dollar moved in down the street, not because a bunch of lying motherfarkers caused a world-wide economic meltdown. But we can't do anything about those people, can we? Let's blame it on something we can easily understand. We're too stupid to do otherwise.
