Thank you for leaving your money, and a small number of dead bodies. Now load it back on the trailer and drive home.

"Authorities say the victim, 43-year-old Sheila Coleman, was not wearing a helmet."

Kinda surprised they even bother to mention this. Helmets seemed more the exception than the rule. Driving through the Needles Highway four/five across it seems like many go a little beyond deathwish.

Jesus, can the farking un-American pigs not go find some real police work to do? They have to camp on a bike rally and randomly search everybody for drugs?

Hard to say without more details. It said she hit a pick-up truck, not that it hit her. It could have been parked. Maybe pulling out, and she rear-ended it.

It's all in the numbers. When we consider the stories we see in the media every day -of whatever sort, shootings, tornadoes, hurricanes- we tend to forget the effect on the numbers involved of just living in a country with 300 million people.

A lot of those organs are usually shaken up into un-usable mush after most bike accidents. I guess you could save an eye or two, perhaps the heart as long as it didn't rupture from impact, skin is doubtful, and other major organs were probably bruised failry well.

Having said that, I've never understood Sturgis. Been there once and won't be going back. Lot's of sagging boobies being flashed that belonged to women who were ridden harder than their man's Hogs. Too much po-po presence and I felt like I was being monitored by Big Brother just for buying a Coke. As in Coca Cola. Actually, it was easier to buy white powder than the drink. "I'll have a Coke" - barternder hands you a beer. "No. COKE!!!" - biker next to you says "Give me $20".

I guess I don't get the attraction of bikes. I have a co-worker who is heavy into motorcycles, and in the two years I have known her, I have watched her organize three benefit events for friends of hers who got splattered and left kids behind. I'm all for thrill seeking, but it just seems too damn dangerous.

Even if every vehicle on the road was a bike, there are still lots of things to run into and ways for bikes to go down. I always figured if you're not wearing a helmet, then there's nothing in your head worth protecting.

Is this a troll attempt? How can you have any idea if the helmet would have made a difference? Riding for 20 years hardly qualifies you to be able to claim that one way or the other. You don't have any idea of the particulars of the accident other than a truck was involved. Hitting a pickup truck is hardly a sure death. Your whole post is just ridiculous. BDC's are certainly a problem on the road, but not wearing basic protective gear makes you a part of the problem just as much as the BDC. Im not even talking about leathers or real riding gloves or boots. Just a freakin helmet.

The most common cause of death in motorcycle accidents is head injury. What does a helmet give at least some protection against? Its not quite 1+1, but its pretty close.

We have a rally in Austin every year at the hottest point of the year, helmets are definitely the exception. Wife an I keep a Tally of the kill count starting on day one but the absolutely hillarious news story from this years rally was that there were NOOOO DWI's.....yea I had to check with a cop on that one. Helps if the cops are told not to check for DWI's on bikers that weekend. Well the Mayor sure does love his city events.

Oh well, we stopped going a while back when it turned into rubby Mardi Gras with shopping stalls.

As far as the trolling helmet debate here I'll add my two bits. I have been riding motorcycles since I was 7, 40 now. Kissed pavement more than most I imagine and seriously bit it more than 13 times. Without a helmet I would not have made it to 40. Hell a wreck I had back in 1986 stripped all the plastic off one side of my helmet and spun it half way around my head, only broke both arms. 60mph into a rocky ditch, bike landed on a barb wire fence and barely got scratched.
