Haha. The goose-stepping faux Nazis marching along to the beat of David Bowie had me and my dad somewhat puzzled...not sure what that was about. I'm amazed the Daily Mail hasn't rageploded over it.

I assumed it was going to be diatoms or dyes. Salt that colors water red is pretty interesting.

It was trying to be a concert that appealed to everyone, and throw in some pointless dancers interpreting the music somehow for some reason. Thus it appealed to no one. Spice Girls really can't sing, I know that's obvious but jeez, why the fark were they given some kind of headline act treatment? Too many boy bands. 1 is too many but this had way too many.

It was almost all saved by the Freddie bit, and then the Brian May with his white barnetted solo. Then they ruined it all by having that woman sing. Not cool, at all.

The singing was pretty bad, the first woman sang flat, Madness was bad ("where, where"), Beatles songs played a la CD, wobbly old Kinks singing, a slide show of David Bowie photos (!). That's where I switched it off...couldn't yeah, the Spice Girls.

It was just all so...meh... a populist tribute to a Britain that hasn't existed for 30 years, if it ever existed at all.

ANYHOO, this red lake thing is pretty cool. What is it about the salt that makes the lake go red? The article and another one on the Daily Fail with more and cooler pictures just state it like it doesn't require any explanation.

That doesn't really clear that much up though does it? I mean what is it about the concentration of salt that makes it turn red, rather than green or black, or grey, etc. Is it something to do with refraction, or particulates, or what exactly?

The color of the lake is characteristic of those where very high evaporation rates occur. As water evaporates during the dry season, salinity levels increase to the point that salt-loving microorganisms begin to thrive. Such halophile organisms include some cyanobacteria that make their own food with photosynthesis as plants do. The red accessory photosynthesizing pigment in the cyanobacteria produces the deep reds of the open water of the lake, and orange colors of the shallow parts of the lake. The alkali salt crust on the surface of the lake is also often colored red or pink by the salt-loving microorganisms that live there.
