You know, with the good hair and coming off the McCain campaign, it hadn't really struck me to now that Romney would be the third-oldest president to be inaugurated if he is in 2013. Not at all saying he's "too old" (which I did say with McCain), more a matter of noting the passage of my own time (seeing that Romney's contemporaries, W and Bill Clinton, are also getting up there).

Picking someone his son's age does make that stand out a little, though.

Good. Such visits inevitably make traffic worse than it is, and I've places to be tonight.

bulldg4life: Do you really want to cancel a campaign stop in one of the biggest cities in one of the biggest/most important states?

Can you do that with G20 conferences and stuff? Nah, I'm pretty beat. Maybe next year.

He ain;t tired he just doesn't want to be attacked with rotten fruits and veggies there. Not a smart move to appear in Florida after picking a VP who wants to end medicare and hand out insurance vouchers instead.

Romney doesn't actually go to theme parks, but he does have friends who own them.

I'm calling fake excuse. My guess is that immediately on the heels of a Ryan pick he doesn't want to deal with Medicare-related questions from a press corps looking to take advantage of his presence in a state like Florida.

Romney is afraid he would come across as less life-like than the Disney's animatronic presidents.

In the world of music, "exhaustion" is a code word for "too much cocaine."

Just sayin'.

EvilEgg: Tired already? Campaigning is grueling business and this man has never done a real day's work in his life.

If he thinks campaigning (IN FREAKING AUGUST) is "too tiring" then he is not cut out to be President.

seriously.

This campaign is going to kick his but in October.

Expolaris: ...so he picks a VP that wants to get rid of Medicare ...and then skips a Florida campaign trail stop...

This makes more sense than "too tired"

Maybe his advance people discovered the local retired folks hate him and are loaded for bear.

If so, Romney isn't tired, just too big a pussy to stand up and explain his decisions to the people they would affect.

That might be for the best.

I was thinking about calling my boss and explaining dude, I'm just too tired, long weekend you know. I gotta spend some quality time with the pillow, you know right?

Then I remembered I need a farking job.

rufus-t-firefly: Romney CANNOT win without Florida - even if he somehow pulls off wins in Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa and Virginia (which is highly unlikely), Obama still gets 270 with Florida.

It would be amazing if he won all those swing states -- including Ohio -- and still lost the election. In fact, that's the type of high-caliber fail I've come to expect from the likes of Romney...

rufus-t-firefly: He also desperately wanted to change the national conversation from his tax returns to something else and a bold pick for running mate might be his only chance.

If he thinks this will work he's dumber than I thought. Ryan will dominate the news cycle for a while, but when interest in him dies down the tax returns are back on the radar. In a sense, this is a favor to the democrats. Harping on the tax returns non-stop was in danger of sounding like whining. Now there will be a break and they can bring it up fresh closer to the election. Mid September sounds good to me.

Romney is going to coast on VP nomination buzz until the convention, and then ride the convention buzz until the middle of September. After that, he'll get back to serious campaigning.

rufus-t-firefly: Looks like Romney's advisors aren't complete idiots.

Romney's Inner Circle Opposed Ryan as Veep Candidate

Initially when the subject of the running mate came up, much of Romney's inner circle was opposed to the choice of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) because they feared the effects his budget would have on seniors, especially in Florida. His campaign staff wanted Tim Pawlenty since he wouldn't stir up much controversy and wouldn't hurt in any states. However, Romney overruled his staff, in part because he likes Ryan and gets along with him well. But he was surely aware of a large number of national polls and swing state polls in the past weeks showing him behind and not gaining. He also desperately wanted to change the national conversation from his tax returns to something else and a bold pick for running mate might be his only chance. Whether this was a good idea will start to become apparent in the next two weeks as pollsters begin asking about Ryan.

You know, on this one I think Romney made the right choice. Ryan's a polarizing figure, yes, but at least he stands for something rather than just "Vote for me and it will be unicorns and rainbows!"

Think about how Pawlenty would have gone over instead: yeah, he helps with a swing state but honestly he's really not, uh...not... the most inspir....

...Sorry, nodded off there for a second. What were we talking about?

I think you (and Romney) overestimate the amount of buzz he will get.

Brave Sir Romney ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Romney turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Romney!
