There's like still a good 20-30 minutes to go after the speeches.

I knew there was no way Gary Barlow wouldn't get himself involved somehow.

Caeldan: Apparently Rio might be about the only country to make money off the games... $250 a head for tourist visa to go there!

Just fly to one of the bordering countries, hike from there. Can't be that difficult, right?

Cheesehead_Dave: DamnYankees: there their theyre: DamnYankees: Mrtraveler01: Doesn't matter. They're happening in August anyway.

Are they? I assumed its be flipped since its the Southern Hemisphere, even if it is still warm there in August.

It's on the equator

Its nowhere near the equator. Thousands of miles south of it.

Rio is about as far south as Miami is north.

Almost - Rio is 57 south, Miami 46 north. Regardless, no one would say Miami is on the equator.

paj: BBC sez - These billboards are of iconic British models including Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Lily Donaldson, Stella Tennant, Karen Elson, Lily Cole, Georgia May Jaggar, Jourdan Dunn, David Gandy. The models wear Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Christopher Kane, Burberry, Erdem, Victoria Beckham, Jonathan Saunders, Stephen Jones (headwear) and Paul Smith.

The CTV feed earlier had one of the commentators say "Folks, as a sports commentator, I never thought I'd say this, but here we go... the models are wearing the following designers..." then the above, followed by "Sorry, hockey fans." Awesome.

Sad fact - Gary Barlow and his wife suffered a stillbirth last week, but he's still committed to performing in this ceremony.

It might not happen.

There's a huge rage in the UK because people want the cauldron to be a permanent installation in the Docklands.

So The Who are going to do a 3 minute medley?
Prolly the first 15 seconds being the synth intro to Baba O'riley.

Joe_diGriz: That's still the greatest cauldron ever.

Yeah, I visited the Lake Placid Olympic torch last week and it is so simplistic in comparison. And it's sad that the building that it rests on is in such decay.

They mentioned The Who was coming back, so we can hope they didn't mention it just to taunt us.

Who?

The band on the stage

Yes, who?

The group playing on stage

So, it's Guess Who, Yes?

No, Who's on the stage!

Look, when you pay the group on stage, who gets the money?

The Band.

No, that's not The Band. The Band is performing later on. Who's on stage.

You tell me!

Earguy: geom_00: OH MY DEAR GOD!

They are cutting away to Animal Practice, then the local news...THEN airing the rest of the CC.

BULLSHIAT NBC. BULL FARKING SHIAT!

My DirecTV guide has midnight being ""London Gold", which sounds like a rah-rah USA highlight show...then 12:35-3:30 "Closing Ceremony"...could be a rerun of the prime time, or maybe a more complete version...eh, I'll DVR'em both.

That's a change. London Gold before took an hour & 20 minutes and this took about 2:40. So they're cutting London Gold and adding to the Closing Ceremonies by that math....

Bungles: Brazil's problem is going to be that hosting an Olympics is 99% organsing committees and project management, which Brasil isn't exactly famous for.

I suspect it may resemble the clusterfark of the Indian-hosted Commonwealth Games last year rather than London or Beijing. Half finished buildings and chaos (even Beijing forgot that people need to eat, so you had to hike an hour into town to find a restaurant).

The problem with Brazil is not so much the Olympics itself but the things that are currently happening right now to the 'poor' residents.. being rounded up and walls built separating the poor and the rich.

Unbeknownst to most westerners, Rio isn;t all thongs, hardbodies, beaches and party.. that is really only a minute aspect of it. Outside of a few city blocks Rio is a very very dangerous city. The cops and the local politicians are also extremely corrupt.
