My wife and I brought my 3 year old nephew to Wildwood. While swimming a pod of dolphins goes swimming by. Thinking he would find it interesting I lift him up so he can see them. He responds with child like delight, "SHARK!"

Two lessons learned that day. The shark panic inspired by Jaws is alive and well. Also, people take the word of 3 year old WAY to seriously.

To be fair, how a shark got involved in a coal mining strike is still baffling.

If there is one thing for certain, it's that there were at least two sharks inolved. Three of the five attacks occurred in a river, and the only shark that can survive fresh water is the bull shark.

A 9-foot great white shark as caught a day or so after the last attack with 15lbs of human remains in its stomach, which pretty much proves that there was a white shark and a bull shark involved.

My kid's school's mascot is The Sharks. Next week's back-to-school open houses are being touted as "Shark Week". Which is nice.

At that size they are still at the fish eating stage. The pic of "alleged man eater" is more like 6 feet, which is about toddler sized for a White.

And we only have a newspaper account for the remains. No coroner report

Which indicates that it was a bull shark doing all of it, which fits with the general behavior and personality of the species. You don't get to be cosidered the most dangerous species of shark because of taco farts.

Eleven feet long, highest testosterone levels of any animal, frequents inshore waters that are generally murky and cloudy, indiscriminate of its diet.

Exactly. great white sharks get a farkton bigger than a bull shark, and are scarier visually, but a great white will generally ignore a person. We aren't their favored meal, and they don't want us specifically. A bull shark does not give a fark. It is mean, angry, and always hungry. Anything that gets in its way and can fit in its mouth it eats.

There's also no way that a great white actually went up a river and started snacking on people. It just wouldn't survive such a trip, and a tiny six to nine foot one especially wouldn't have done it.

The home-school system at work, ladies and gentlemen. Now steamingpile will tell us about how Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to prove the Earth was round, and that duck quacks don't echo.

A juvenile great white could withstand a day or so in the Matawan Creek. I read a couple of books on the attacks (I live on the Jersey Shore so it's almost required reading) and most experts agreed that it was more likely one really adventurous shark, most likely a juvenile Great White who wandered into the creek because of all the offal from the slaughterhouses that used to line it.

The river in question is not fresh water. From wiki

Ichthyologist George H. Burgess surmises

" the size of the "creek," its depth, and salinity regime were closer to a marine embayment and that a smallish white clearly could have wandered into the area"

Right. Coastal streams subject to tidal forces -- which I think is most of them, really -- are often brackish in the outlet leg. We've seen sharks in our rivers here in Connecticut, too.

In 1916, a great white shark attacked five people near the Jersey Shore.

Pretty sure that's not a Great White in that picture.

This is off topic, but I've always wondered what would happen if you auto-tuned a duck's quack.
