Actually, I do have one thing to say. FTA: "Paul Ryan represent[s] Obama's most horrifying nightmare: math."

I mentioned this yesterday, and I'll say it again. The original "budget" submitted by Ryan did not have any numbers.

A. "Budget." Without. Any. Numbers. On. It.

JadedRaverLA: Captain_Ballbeard: JadedRaverLA: I've just learned the hard way that you have to be very specific with claims like that. Glen Beck and his ilk will absolutely go through the damn budget, count the page numbers, and then go on the air SCREAMING about how liberals have made this scandalous claim... when the Fox News 'fact checkers' (that must be the greatest job on earth) have counted LITERALLY hundreds of numbers in the budget.

Therefore all liberal claims are vicious lies. So, vote Republican.

One document in the stack is maybe a planted forgery and it automatically means: GW Bush was in the skies protecting Texas and Jesus from the Varmint-Cong for three solid years, is automatically President, Kerry was a draft dodger who dodged the draft by going to Vietnam and exaggerating injuries he never received in the first place and 911!

It is fairly amazing to me that you can go from 'one piece of evidence doesn't hold up' directly to 'this entire case is based on lies and is invalid' without even considering any of the remaining evidence. If I ever go to trial for something, I sincerely hope the jury is made up entirely of conservative 'true believers.'

As for 9/11, I understood the desire for solidarity and rallying around our leader at the time, but I will never understand how that translated into support for a war against Iraq, or any of Bush's other policies. Given the absolute vitriol the far right has toward Obama (and really, any Dem), I worry that if a similarly tragic event occurred today the result would be impeachment proceedings and a never-ending blame game, instead of any show of collective support and determination on our part.

It was allowed to. 9/11 shocked the consciousness of about 98% of all Americans (the rest of us were only surprised that it took as long as it did). The fear and horror engendered by the way we got hit on our own soil provoked a wave of nationalism, which the ultranationalists were only too glad to use and abuse to further their own ends. This was not helped by continual replays of the event for the next hundred or so days.

Nationalism and patriotism are not bad; but if there had been 24/7 500-channel news coverage of Pearl Harbor, America would be an armed fascist camp today. The huge wave of Americanism and patriotism after Pearl Harbor could as easily have become an ultranationlist flashpoint had things been only slightly different. As it was, we saw the internment of many citizens merely because they looked different and that was OK because the Japs. Had someone else been in charge (pretend Prescott Bush had become President instead of FDR) I suspect we would not have stopped with the Japanese, but gone on to their allies the Germans and Italians. (Or perhaps not, Prescott was an ardent admirer of Hitler)

So even today, a decade after the fact, ultranationalism has a death-grip on the country simply because it was allowed to establish one back in September 2001.

Let me remind you how nightmarish Ryan is to Obama Romney. Here's a six-minute take down of Obamacare by Congressman Ryan.

I bet it doesn't include this:

"I'm not a fan of [Romney's health care reform] system," Ryan told C-SPAN in 2010. He argued that government is rationing care in the state and claimed that people are "seeing the system bursting by the seams, they're seeing premium increases, rationing and benefit cuts." He called the system "a fatal conceit" and "unsustainable."

Though Romney has gone to great lengths to distinguish his Massachusetts health care law from Obamacare, Ryan doesn't see the difference. "It's not that dissimilar to Obamacare, and you probably know I'm not a big fan of Obamacare," Ryan said at a breakfast meeting sponsored by the American Spectator in March of 2011.

Does Romney not realize what he has to do to win the election?

Yep, by picking Ryan as his running mate Romney has made sure that everyone who was going to vote for him anyway is still going to vote for him. In order to win in November, he needs to reach out to the undecided independents who are not happy with Obama's performance but are not particularly susceptible to the dog whistle approach to American politics. They want substantive programs from their candidate, not vague promises. They want to know that they are not voting for a creature of the interests who tanked the economy and then walked away with tidy bonuses, and they want to be reassured that the new president is neither a heartless ideologue nor a clueless trust fund baby. Ryan does nothing to draw in those voters; quite the contrary. We'll see what happens in November--we'll see what relentless advertising funded by the bottomless pockets of plutocrats can do in the waning days of a campaign--but all things being equal, the Ryan pick is both one more example of Romney's tone deafness and a signal that the extremist wing of the repub Party is still suspicious of his ideological credentials.

Great ideas, but take out the thing about cutting defense. We're going to spend more on defense. Take out the part about raising taxes on the rich, we're going to reduce their taxes even more. So cut entitlements that people paid into for decades and raise taxes on all but the ultra-compensated and we've got ourselves a plan!

Back in 1999, his first year in the House, Ryan voted to ban gays and lesbians in the District of Columbia from adopting children, and opposed establishing a domestic partnership registry in the District as well."
