At Beijing, they built the arrival and departure terminals about 2 or 3 kilometers away from the rest of the airport. The solution they used was to build an automated monorail system that arrives every 4 minutes or so.

Yeah, but if you have to switch between terminals 2 and 3 (say, because your ticket is entirely in Mandarin and the travel agent told you the wrong terminal), you have to take a shuttle bus that takes what seems like forever to get between the terminals.

Heathrow is the absolute worst though. No wait, at least I never saw any mice in the terminal at Heathrow, I can't say the same about Frankfurt.

I'm picturing a planeload of cranky people just getting off an international flight speedwalking 0.6 miles to get an early place in line at customs. It's not pretty.

Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a

If you are taking 15-minutes to walk a half mile with purpose (which is what you are doing between flights), you shouldn't be walking.

I've never traveled internationally, but I have been through a lot of US airports, ranging in size from the very large (Atlanta Hartsfield/Jackson) to the very small (Jackson Hole, WY). Of all of them, Atlanta's airport is easily the best. Maybe there's something special about the international concourse that I'm not familiar with, but the rest of it is heads and shoulders above anywhere else I've been. I really don't get the hate for ATL.

Even 20min/mi is 3 MPH, and isn't a crazy speed to walk, and that is a half mile in 10 minutes. 12 min/mi is pretty close to "mall walker" speed, since any faster and you are up to at least a light jog.

It's pretty simple. People occasionally have bad experiences at airports. ATL is the busiest airport. A lot of people have bad experiences at ATL.

And I did this walk Memorial Day weekend. I was mildly annoyed, but mainly because the signage wasn't updated everywhere and it wasn't clear you had walk down terminal E to get to F (or so something like that). The terminal is, however, very nice.

ATL is easily better than LAX, LGA or JFK

I haven't been through those, but I have been through Seattle, Houston (not Hobby), Miami, Hartford, Salt Lake City, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Islip, Syracuse, San Francisco, Las Vegas, DFW, Minneapolis St. Paul, Kansas City, and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. Most of those just outright suck.

Orlando MCO does similar. I found Atlanta to be among the best and worst airports I've visited. PITA to get anywhere, even using the slidewalks, but I had to transfer there on military leave many years ago, and realized I'd dropped my ticket when I got to the gate area. As boarding was about to be closed, an airline rep zoomed up on a golf cart, ticket and boarding pass in hand to give back. I could not have been happier or more relieved.

I don't check bags if I can at all help it. I've got this convertible carry on bag that you can carry with a shoulder strap or backpack straps (which tuck away to make it look like a respectable businesslike carry on shoulder bag), that usually ends up with about 25-30 pounds worth of crap in it because it's my only bag. I didn't have any problems with carrying it through Frankfurt, though it did remind me why there's no way I want to ever gain another 25 pounds.

So what they should do is suck my dick and carry me to the terminal as a god on a golden palanquin and then pay me to drink their finest liquors and meats. Or they could just NOT have a half mile long walk and keep them sky beers comin'.

I like Atlanta, very simple layout. But half mile is to long to walk in an airport. Particularly if you have a connecting flight. Still haven't seen anybody mention Chicago's O'Hella. Only airport i have ever been in where terminal shuttles are regularly cancelled.

Narita's not bad. If you want bad, try Guangzhou late at night when you have to take long hikes AND they don't have any employees that speak anything but Cantonese despite being up there with the world's busiest airports. The airport that I loath with the fire of a thousand suns is JFK. Terribly designed, terribly staffed, and they make you feel like you just entered a police state.

LAX is one of the worst airports I've been to; however, long walks is NOT one of the criticisms.

ATL didn't seem too bad the times I had a connection there. The airport I can't stand is DFW.
