Shark Week has become the "It's A Wonderful Life" of nature TV: too predictable, too much.

Shark week sucks. I miss the old nature shows that they used to have, though.

It's come to this.
This celebrity gossip website is mentioning a series of shows on the Discovery Channel.

This one link perhaps exemplifies the decline of intelligent/educational television better than anything else.
The Discovery Channel is now appealing to this demographic.

/public television you're still cool

Sharks have many rows of teeth, never stop swimming and are often misunderstood. I just saved you losers a whole week of watching The Discovery Channel. Go outside.

No one does it like they do it on the discovery channel.

My one shark story:

We were out taking a boat out to a client in St Martin, and were fishing along the way, when we hit something. We were in open water, and the boat was a good size, so we were more than a bit concerned. Jason took a tank and went over the side to inspect the hull and screws, and we brought all the lines in, while we checked the motor.

Jason found a good sized scrape, but didn't see anything that we could have hit. He came back up, and just as his fins cleared, a fin cut the water behind him. Next thing we know, there are dozens of shapes in the water. Hammerheads, and not small ones. Jase, looked down, realized that he had just been in the water with literally dozens of good sized hammerheads, and got the shakes. We took a few minutes, had a couple of beers, started up the engines, and got to St Martin in record time, and didn't waste any more time fishing and for damn sure didn't go in the water for the rest of the trip.

The guy who captained our trips, always kept a shotgun when we fished, in case a shark got on a line. He had no interest in trying to land one, and his advice was always, "Blow it's godd*mn brains out or cut the line."

We cut a good number of lines on those trips...

Just strap cameras to the back of some seals and air live footage as they fight for their lives.

While fishing off a boat in Puget Sound, I caught a 4ft dogfish. Being 12 and interested in sharks, I landed it and kept it. We brought the carcass home to show off to my friends, then had to dispose of it. Best place I could think of to ditch the body was the small pond in the neighboring development (Woodlake, between the cemetery and the rifle range, near University Place) where my friends I would go to catch frogs...

Sadly, it looks like they took out the pond/park area to put in more houses. Wonder if they ever found the jaw or teeth or anything.

True in more ways than one. Instead of actually showing interesting things about different sharks around the world, all of the shows seem to focus on a subset of the Great White population in South Africa that jump out of the water when they attack sea lions.

To be fair it is really cool the first time you see it, but there is no reason to have a whole week dedicated to it.

Yeah, two episodes on the first day = the entire lineup of the week, ignoring that tomorrow's episodes are a new Mythbusters doing 25 shark myths and an episode about Carcharadon megalodon.

I think I just puked in my mouth a little..

By the way, wouldn't that be classified as a species of American Land Monster and not a shark?

Counterpoint: Shark Week has been around for 25 years. Even groups outside the target demo are bound to hear about something after 25 years.

I got excited for a hot minute right before the first show started and then I realized it was going to be SSDD: great whites jumping out of the air in slow motion and the loads of pseudoscience that will lead every imbecile to believe they are qualified to make sweeping statements about the ecology of fishes.

Maybe a bit of hyperbole, but definitely not trolling. From a quick flip through the show listings:
1. Air Jaws Apocalypse
2. Air Jaws Apocalypse Reloaded
3. Air Jaws II: Even Higher
4: Shark week's impossible shots (featuring jumping sharks)
5: Air Jaws: Sharks of South Africa
6: Ultimate Air Jaws

Those were on the premiere day because they had a new Air Jaws episode and were building to it. All week they're showing a variety of episodes from the last 25 years every day before the two new ones in the evening.
