D) none of the above?

Normal people view 9-11 as an evil act by committed by terrorists who hijacked airplanes.

The TSA views 9-11 as an evil act by committed by pilots who were terrorists.

And so it's been for 11 years now.

Screening procedures may or may not be effective at risk reduction, but boy, do they lead to myriad, wonderful dick contests.

edmo: The TSA views 9-11 as an evil act by committed by pilots who were terrorists.

The TSA minions view 9/11 as an employment opportunity, freighted with obnoxious whiners and a public that doesn't know it's place. The TSA bureaucracy views 9/11 as an opportunity to exploit fear to build an empire. If you haven't read Enemies: A History of the FBI yet, that is tonight's homework.

One side or the other in this is lying their ass off.

Normally, my tendency is to side against the TSA in things like this, because they really are ball grabbin' douches, but this pilot also sounds like he might just be a bigger douche.

Technically it is assault I think - Try touching a cop even after being told not to during a discussion and see what happens.

From the article comments:

I have never had any problems with TSA. They have a job to do and they do it to their best ability. Lines at airports would move much smoother if travelers would use common sense and show a little curiosity. Let's fight terrorism by letting TSA do their jobs! Fighting TSA only breeds fear among your fellow passengers.

Seems a lot of people do like the TSA - and they are idiots.

While contact is an essential element of battery, there must be an absence of contact for assault.

It's considered 'Assault by Contact' in many jurisdictions and carries the same criminal penalty as a traffic ticket.

Do you know what kind of mayhem would arise if we eliminated the TSA? That's right, none.

This country has been in a downward spiral ever since 9/11.

During a charterd civie flight to Kuwait for an Iraq deployement, I had my nail clippers confiscated by TSA because they had a dull 1" blade on them. But I carried my rifle with me. Handed the guy the rifle, walk through the detector, get the rifle back, only to find the asshat going through my shiat. He found the clippers and said I couldn't have them because 'they were dangerous'. Never mind the fact that it was a flight charted for military only and every farking person on that flight had a gun.

But it's even crazier when they do that shiat to pilots. He's the mother farker flying the plane. All he has to do is push the stick foward. What the fark do they think he will do with a nail file?

Not sure on the "after being told not to" part there.

FTFA: Mcghie said he told Harbaugh not to touch him a second time and Harbaugh complied, but the pilot told police he still wanted to see Harbaugh face criminal charges.

Does that mean that it was the second time he told him, or that he didn't want a second touch to occur? I took it to mean the latter.

I will not stand here and listen to you libtards insult our last REAL Commander-in-Chief George W. Bush and his decree to create a Department of Homeland Security to protect us from terrorists. Don't you want to protect the Homeland? I sleep safer every night knowing that a federal agency of security guards is protecting us from terrorists. I also appreciate the casual reacharound they give me, but I am married so this does not mean I'm gay so stop saying that.

The cop must have been super laid back, otherwise that could have played out much differently. The cop tazes the tsa guy (he shiats himself), the pilot smashes his empty Jim Beam bottle over the cop's dome and all are blown away when the swat team arrives.

Requiring pilots to go through TSA passenger screening is totally stupid, and no amount of "that's the rules, deal with it" makes it less stupid. It's the level of stupid rulemaker that undermines the legitimacy of the rulemaker. The TSA isn't doing their job if they have this rule.

I completely agree. If you are there in a position of authority speaking for the government, refusing to give your name when asked should be an automatic firing with zero chance of being rehired in the future/with another government entity. You are NOT above the people that you're working for.

Do you know how much authority the TSA has? Zero. They are not law enforcement. Just because they wear a badge and an uniform doesn't make them a cop. They are more concerned with checking for fake/expired IDs and bottles of water than focusing on actual security.

He was boarding an aircraft with a rifle, along with other military servicemen who were armed, and the TSA took his nail clipper because they thought it was a threat. That is what most people call "asinine".

Let me tell you why there will never be another hijacking. Not because of the TSA, but because of the passengers. If someone tries to hijack another plane, the passengers will stand up and beat the shiat out of the guy(s). The old rules of hijacking are out the window. Passengers will no longer be compliant. They will fight because they know what will happen if they don't.

We had to check our Gerbers and knives, etc., when I flew to Kuwait on deployment in '05. But we carried our rifles, grenade launchers, and machine guns (249s, 240Bs).

a. People who find submission to authority comforting because it relieves them of the fear and anxiety of having to be responsible.
b. Men.

My fiancée deployed around the same time as I (before we met) and she just told me she remembers the same.

I think it's only been very recently since TSA exempted pilots from screening, and it's probably for reasons such as this, where screeners with no freedom for discretion or common sense have had to waylay pilots for carrying on "prohibited items," despite the obvious fact that they don't have to storm their own cockpit to hijack the plane.

You know what's really ridiculous? I've flown (myself as the pilot) into the Washington SFRA. I'm ASEL, ASES, AGI, IFR, plus various endorsements, commercial ticket private pilot. I've been vetted by at least 8 different agencies to make sure I'm not a risk to security. (work)

The TSA still treats me like a criminal every time I have to fly commercial.

Farking ridiculous security theater.

My wife and I had problems opting out of scanners at MHT. The rentarapists they had there just stared through us when we tried to opt out.

Me: "May I opt out of this?"

Officer Friendly: "Yes"

... continued staring straight ahead (I am way taller than this guy, so he's basically staring me right in the chin) ...

Me: after uncomfortable pause "Sooo.... how do I go about doing that then?"

They really just try to herd you through the magic box. I want to stand there and make them touch me. I want them to have to violate my person, because years hence, I want to maximize the shame with which we collectively look back upon "Airport Security".
