From the comments of TFA: As a production assistant who has been screamed at by Sarah Jessica Parker for not supplying green only M&Ms and enough Evian to shower in, I can tell you there is nothing more terrifying than a horse with an unfamiliar rider.

Comedy gold.

They were pretty poorly-behaved today as well. The Mexican was bucked off and clung to the horse's neck to clear the third combination hurdle. At least four horses refused to jump.

So the horse clearly won. What medal does he get?

George S. Patton -- yes, THAT Patton -- competed in the Pentathlon at the Olympics.

He didn't medal.

In the modern pentathlon, each horse is used twice. The other competitor who drew this horse was thrown during the warm-ups and injured so badly he had to withdraw from the competition.

Reading pentathlon as penetration really makes that an odd sentence.

'cos they're so damn handsome, a lot of people have no idea how badly a horse can fark you up. Sure, it may not be with malicious intent, but when a 1200-1500# animal gets confused/pissed off/disoriented bad things can happen.

Horses are so strange...my old trainer had a horse that woyld pack any kid or beginner adult around all day long. But if you knew how to ride he would throw your ass off within two laps around the ring. RIP Lofty - you were a pain in the ass but there was never a dull moment while you were around.

So what's the deal with having to use a stock horse and not being able to bring your own?

It seems like several competitors got a raw deal by drawing a shiatty horse. It would be like a track event where you randomly drew for shoes and a few people got spikes, some got combat boots, and others had to run in flip flops.

You can't bring your own horse. You have to draw the horse by lot.

Good thing Chow Yun Fat was in the audience.

The legend of modern pentathlon is of a Napoleonic cavalry officer who is sent to deliver an urgent dispatch. Given an unfamiliar horse, he rode across challenging terrain under enemy fire shooting a number of his pursuers. His ammunition expended, he was then confronted by a soldier with his sword drawn. He won the duel and remounted his horse only to reach a river which his steed could not cross. Our gallant hero swam the river and then ran the rest of the way to deliver his message successfully.

Modern Pentathlon was essentially made up by Coubertin (the Olympics' founder), and he wanted it that way. More on the Pentathlon horse selection.
