This was on reddit yesterday.

Here is what is on reddit today.

Overly dramatic sensationalized subject gets over 2000 upvotes: "The White House has removed a petition about the TSA airport screening procedures from the White House "We the People" website. About 22,500 of the 25,000 signatures necessary for a response from the Administration had been obtained."
hmm.. that's weird of them.. So.. why would they do that?
[2] Answer found in comments all the way at the bottom.
They only had until the 9th to get the required signatures. Come on guys.
TL;DR: Reddit Politics foamed at mouth over White House taking down online petition as scheduled.

you think the Republicans would act any differently? hmm...well, actually now that I think about it...they GOP would take all those names and put them on a watch list.

*sigh*

we're not going to get rid of our security theater, just like we're not going to legalize cannabis (the subject of an earlier petition that was also ignored). the reasons for both petitions being ignore have nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats, it has to do with the fact that we're an authoritarian government that will NEVER reduce it's own power. right wing, left wing, Republican, Democrat...when was the last time you saw anyone from either party actually reduce their own levels of power and influence? I can't remember that ever happening.

A link from a week ago further explains the petition expires on August 9th

FTL: If we get 25,000 by August 9th, the government will respond. I doubt they'll capitulate, but it will be a press event that will put even more pressure on the TSA.

Talk about shiatty timing. And so close, too.

...and apparently in much the same fashion as other petitions that have not reached the threshold have done.
22k is close; but close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and H-Bombs. Not petitions; just ask Newt.

BullBearMS: When you've already refused to obey a court order on the matter, what makes you think a petition asking why you refuse to obey that court order will be more effective?

Because a judge only has one vote on election day?

BullBearMS: However, they have managed to trigger the Streisand effect now, so well done.

Solution is pretty simple.
First, create a "new" petition, with almost identical wording. Start trying to count to 25000 in less than 30 days, again.

Second, start a petition asking that petitions which do not reach the threshold be closed, but left in place. Maybe add some legalish language about preservation of presidential records or some such.

Exactly. They were attempting to create an artificial scandal. I've been rather surprised at the lack of scandals this administration has had compared to prior ones like Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr, Reagan, Carter, Nixon...

The Numbers: Fart_Machine: Unexpected because they had a set date when the petition would be taken down and stuck to it?

Which is an utterly moronic point to quibble about. 22,000 people wanted an answer from their government - why the fark shouldn't the government actually provide them with one?

If your aim is to show you're a transparent and responsive government, hiding behind arbitrary bureaucratic rules is a dick move, particularly in an election year when you're going to be talking about the importance of people engaging with the political process.

I really don't get why some people have such a knee-jerk need to defend 'their side' at all costs, even against legitimate criticism that the government should actually be doing something better than it is.

... it's a petition system. It's not "arbitrary bureaucratic rules," it's the openly stated way in which the petitions work. You get x signatures in 90 days. It's not a knee-jerk defense of a side, it's something very simple that was going to happen happening exactly as expected.

You can read into it all you want, but every petition on there works in the same way.

I will post this, as I did in the last thread about the petition. The terms of service for petition site states:

To avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition.

Which means that even if it had succeeded, which it didn't, the White House could have easily ignored it.

I do agree that they should leave up the closed petitions, even if they fail.

OrangeSnapper: The deadline was the 9th, and the rules are the rules. There was a scramble to get a bunch of signatures before the clock struck midnight on that date, and it looked like it might succeed. But the petition was pulled at 11:30 AM. But the 9th was announced as the deadline, and the rules are the rules...everyone knew the 9th was the deadline.

Likewise, everyone knows the deadline for filing taxes is April 15th. Every year, thousands if not millions rush at the last minute to get their returns filed before the end of that date. Next year, what if the IRS decides, on the 15th, that it is going to set the deadline time to 11:30 AM, without actually telling anyone in advance? But the deadline is the 15th, so that makes it okay, right? The rules are the rules, right? Enjoy your fine.

Or maybe, just maybe, the petition was pulled 30 days from the date and time it was posted, just like every other petition is, and the people who posted it were mistaken when they thought they had until midnight? Just a thought.

Do you honestly think anyone in government doesn't know that we have a problem with the TSA? The TSA has been in violation of a court order for months now and nobody is doing a thing about it.

OWS and Tea Party... This should be your new target.

The politicians on both sides of the aisle have really stepped on their dicks with this one. they have created and environment where any opponent can go after them as "soft on terrorism" if they relax any of these dumbass regs - and if they do and "something" happens, they're relly screwd.
But they know they have to get rid of this shiat - people hate it.
You can lie to Americans, cheat them, steal from them, and desecrate their dearest values right in front of them, and they'll just burp and turn up the sound on "Dancing With the Stars" - but heaven help your poor political ass if you inconvenience them.
So they have created quite a little pickle for themselves - it will be amusing to see them try to work it out.

The petitions were all put up for a fixed length of time. Some incited sufficient comment to be of note - this one did not. The fact that you think the rules should have been bent to give more weight to your own personal point of view indicates who is really being blindly partisan here.

You Americans sure have been effectively conditioned by your political overlords.

Government 'of the people, by the people, for the people' sets rules that limit how much it has to respond to the people - greeted with meek acquiescence, even gratitude.

Person questions these rules - automatically treated as ideological enemy and attacked.

Time to wake up a bit, maybe?

Not only that, there was even a link to it on the 8th with the headline:

TFer's friend's petition to force TSA to review "full body imaging" at airports has more than 20000 signatures; will go in front of Obama if it gets 4600 more. Difficulty: By tomorrow.

Obama should have used his presidential powers to keep the petition up past the date it was expired at, this is an injustice beyond anything that has been done before. You are absolutley right this needs a full investigation, Issa is asleep at the wheel here. This may call for UN intevention. Never before in the history of our country has something on a website been removed when it said it was going to be.

The petition was down for several days due to "maintenance" on the website, they should have given it more time. Besides, the 9th was just a date on a calendar.

It took 17 people to get the FCC to completely re-write how television is shown and censored.

1 million people sided a petition for GMO foods to be labeld, the court ruled it counted as one person. In short, this petition wouldn't have done anything, just another symbolic piece of crap.

Really? So why was it listed to expire when it did a week ago when it was well below the necessary number?

Also, just what kind of groundswell of support do you think you can claim when you can't even manage 25,000 people to agree with you out of 310 million Americans?

This is the real story here. For as unpopular as the TSA is you'd think that the petition could manage 25k.

Reddit has a fair amount of control freak mods that expliciy censor and shadow censor ( so your comment appears when you look at it but not when anybody else looks at it ).

It's a waste of time and has far too many high school kids.

So much failure, so few actual meaningful statements. I repeat, notice that the petition expired after 30 days, exactly as it was supposed to according to the announced rules of the site. Everything is exactly as transparent as promised.

But of course you're too much of a dishonest partisan shill to admit that. So you just go on lying, we will go on laughing at you.
