...And if the petition had garnered enough signatures the head of the TSA's secretary would just have pumped out another response talking about the importance of the TSA and nothing would change, just like when the last petition on the TSA went through.

At any rate, they can always start another petition. It doesn't even have to be on the government's website!

I'd assume you should get the whole last day, unless otherwise specified.
Was it otherwise specified?

It would probably depend on when the petition was initially submitted. I'm assuming not everyone puts their petition in at exactly midnight.

Makes sense.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I think the response window for the petition is 30 days (check the bottom of this page), but note that there were 31 days in July. It looks like the petition was created on the 9th.

Therefore the petition was up for more than 30 days, if I've counted right. Maybe there was some sort of confusion as to when the petition was going to expire.

TL;DR: Reddit Politics foamed at mouth over White House taking down online petition as scheduled.

Came in here to note that it had simply expired as designed, leaving satisfied.

Not only that, there was even a link to it on the 8th with the headline:

TFer's friend's petition to force TSA to review "full body imaging" at airports has more than 20000 signatures; will go in front of Obama if it gets 4600 more. Difficulty: By tomorrow.

Don't threadjack. This isn't about the TSA.

so do you think the TSA screening procedures should be changed or not? i'm curious as to what a Real American thinks about TSA gaterape. do you swallow your pride and let a government employee touch your junk...? or does a Real American fight against the TSA restrictions?

of course...if you fight against the TSA that makes you a librul, doesn't it? that's quite a problem for you...I mean, you have to let a government dude fondle your balls in order to be a 'good conservative'...which is kinda gay. Only 'libruls' fight against having their junk fondled by the TSA these days.

This whole website petition thing is a joke. Originally it took only 5,000 names but then the White House quickly realized this was too low a bar so they upped it to 25,000. But it's still meaningless. The result of this website is that some poor bureaucrat, or bureaucrats, then has to draft a polite response explaining why nothing is going to be done about the issue. Waste of time and money. Someone at the White House should have seen this coming and stopped the petition website before it got started.

Exactly. They were attempting to create an artificial scandal. I've been rather surprised at the lack of scandals this administration has had compared to prior ones like Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr, Reagan, Carter, Nixon...

abb3w: First, create a "new" petition, with almost identical wording. Start trying to count to 25000 in less than 30 days, again.

In July 2011, a federal appeals court ruled that the Transportation Security Administration had to conduct a notice-and-comment rulemaking on its policy of using "Advanced Imaging Technology" for primary screening at airports. TSA was supposed to publish the policy in the Federal Register, take comments from the public, and justify its policy based on public input. The court told TSA to do all this "promptly." A year later, TSA has not even started that public process. Defying the court, the TSA has not satisfied public concerns about privacy, about costs and delays, security weaknesses, and the potential health effects of these machines. If the government is going to "body-scan" Americans at U.S. airports, President Obama should force the TSA to begin the public process the court ordered.

New version created; linky, also short URL.

However, there's a second step:
Until your petition reaches 150 signatures, it will not be publicly viewable on the Open Petitions section of We the People, so be sure to share this URL
.
Didn't know about that one. I wonder how many petitions are kept below the radar by that bit.

The politicians on both sides of the aisle have really stepped on their dicks with this one. they have created and environment where any opponent can go after them as "soft on terrorism" if they relax any of these dumbass regs - and if they do and "something" happens, they're relly screwd.
But they know they have to get rid of this shiat - people hate it.
You can lie to Americans, cheat them, steal from them, and desecrate their dearest values right in front of them, and they'll just burp and turn up the sound on "Dancing With the Stars" - but heaven help your poor political ass if you inconvenience them.
So they have created quite a little pickle for themselves - it will be amusing to see them try to work it out.

The derp is amusing.

The "personal responsibility" folks, the ones who say that shiat happens in life and that it's not the government's place to provide for such contingencies, are screaming about the unfairness of a website glitch and the government not giving their petition extra time beyond the same 30 days that every other petition gets.

Cry me a river. Your tears...they nourish me.

The deadline was the 9th, and the rules are the rules. There was a scramble to get a bunch of signatures before the clock struck midnight on that date, and it looked like it might succeed. But the petition was pulled at 11:30 AM. But the 9th was announced as the deadline, and the rules are the rules...everyone knew the 9th was the deadline.

Likewise, everyone knows the deadline for filing taxes is April 15th. Every year, thousands if not millions rush at the last minute to get their returns filed before the end of that date. Next year, what if the IRS decides, on the 15th, that it is going to set the deadline time to 11:30 AM, without actually telling anyone in advance? But the deadline is the 15th, so that makes it okay, right? The rules are the rules, right? Enjoy your fine.

When you're dealing with a computer, "the 9th" is that moment when 8/8/2102 at 11:59:59 becomes 8/9/2012 00:00:00. That is now "the 9th". So "midnight of the 9th" means that it expires--at least as far as the computer is concerned, and possibly the people who determined this--when midnight on the 8th becomes the 9th. Where people get into trouble is assuming that "midnight on the 9th" meant "midnight OF the 9th." These are two different concepts, at least on paper and in the computer.

Your IRS example is wrong, because you can send your returns in anytime up to the 16th (i.e., midnight OF the 15th). Even if what you meant to say was they extended the deadline to 11:30 a.m. on the 16th and not tell anyone, it would not matter because you HAVE until the 16th (at midnight) to get your returns in, and only until the 16th. Extending the deadline unknown to anyone would not matter.

No: what happened here is that the petition expired as of 00:00:00 on the 9th, and someone kindly gave them almost 12 extra hours to see if they could pull in the number of signatures. But they still didn't.
