Interesting. We certainly had our share of various stinging insects growing up. (mostly yellowjackets, bumblebees, and honeybees, well horseflies, deerflies, etc too but nevermind). Never was aware that the honeybees did not survive winter. I'm oddly shocked to hear this.

They're going about this wrong. I visited Alaska several years back. The proper genetic engineering approach is to adapt those half-pound mosquitoes they have up there to stop sucking all the blood out of the locals and (s)tart pollinating and making honey instead. Send the bees back to Rio and ask Brazil to try that crossbreeding thing again. Don't tell them to change the ladies' swimsuits, though. No problem at all with those.
