blahpers: ignite ice: Welcome to the real world. Tattoos still aren't accepted in every day life and there's a reason for it. They are a blatant distraction to actual productivity. Corporations that want to succeed don't allow them, you won't see them in a real business meeting, and I wouldn't take a police officer seriously if I had a real emergency and they sent an officer covered in tattoos. I'd call back and tell them to send me someone who actually can do their job, someone who actually gives a damn about their appearance and professionalism. Yeah, I am going to judge someone based on their tattoos. They're not cool, and in fifty years, you won't see people with them at all.

Excellent; you are a moron.

/no tattoos
//don't see any point in judging someone by the mere presence of tattoos

I think you didn't satire correctly here.

Tattoos make people look like thugs, so I see the appeal to cops.

That comes in very handy, sometimes.

Tattoos can be covered up. Never fear, most of the time you can figure most things out as soon as people open their mouths.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: zato_ichi: As long as they don't have a name written in cursive on the side of their neck, go wild.

Those are reserved for the heavyset brownish nurse's assistants and phlebotomists. Nothing like getting blood drawn by a mulatto with "Alejandro" written in cursive across the side of her neck.

CSB:
Currently there is a very attractive, very rich, yet very douchebaggy individual walking around with MY ENTIRE NAME in cursive on his neck. Joke's on him.

I don't really have a problem with discriminating based on tattoos, whether on their sheer presence, on their location, and on their content. Tattoos are a choice* and judging someone on their choices is one of the few metrics that's entirely within their own control, as opposed to race, gender, age, etc.

I've seen some pretty cool body art on people, and some of it clearly wouldn't be a problem in that it could be concealed easily with short-sleeve shirts, even in jobs where visible tattoos would be complete unacceptable.

* excepting many people in the '30s and '40s.

Why is the W in "whore" bigger than the A in "attention"?

I watched a Norfolk cop draw down on someone a few months ago and hold their service weapon sideways, gangster style. I was much more concerned by that than whether or not she has a tattoo of a banana on her face or anywhere else. Maybe whether or not they're competent should be a little higher on the list of priorities than whether or not there's ink on their skin.

Thing is tattoos aren't always just decoration, but can indicate affiliations that management might prefer Officers not broadcast.

I saw a Bay Area Officer with a spiderweb tattoo. I've been told that's a white power symbol -- does anyone know enough to tell me if that's accurate?

Spider webs, especially on the elbows, are a pretty ubiquitous traditional design. I have no doubt that some white power douchebags have spiderweb tattoos, but so do a lot of other people with no white power affiliation.

Most people who claim to know what non-obvious tattoos mean (ie swastika, ss bolts) are full of shiat.

That person, if true, needs some remedial firearms training, and a call to supervisor on shift (If approached in a level and non confrontational way) will bring that about. Unless of course it was someone 'posing' as a Cop, you may have witnessed a "disappeared person", in that case you saw nothing...that is unless you wish to see where Disappeared people go :)

There are a few protected classes:
ie
Race
Color
Religion
National Origion
Sex
Familial status
Disability
Age

/discrimination is not a bad thing. But can be if applied to the wrong things. Not hiring someone for not having skills is a good reason to discriminate. Not hiring someone because they have terrible hygiene, can be a good reason to discriminate. Not hiring someone because they are White, is a bad reason. Not hiring someone because they are Muslim is a bad reason...

Wrong. The NYPD recruit who sued wanted to grow his facial hair out long, while the Muslims and Sikhs already on the job have been trimming it to one inch or less.

This. I have 4 tattoos, but I put them where they're easily covered up with regular business clothing. I'm in sales and there's no way in hell I'd ever go to a client with a tattoo showing. I don't think it's a distraction but it does lessen someone's professional credibility. If I see a client who has a tattoo (and a couple do), I definitely treat them differently--I'm more laid back in my demeanor because I feel as though I don't have to impress them as much. They're "cool", therefore don't need the full-on, professional-mode Brigid.

One of my buddies was a cop in Central California. He told me he was shocked when he first started because he noticed most of the cops had tattoos of rebel flags or swastikas. He ended up quitting after a couple years because he couldn't tolerate the corruption and racism in the department. It's amazing to me that people with those tats could even be hired in law enforcement.

People who have a tattoo on their hands or neck also tend to:

1. Buy twenty lottery tickets each week.
2. Own a pit bull.
3. Pursue futile workman's comp claims.
4. Take photographs of babies holding beer cans.
5. Prominently display an electric guitar in the living room.
6. Have a shaven head.
7. Rent the television for £7 weekly.
8. Travel out-of-state specifically to buy fireworks
9. Wear t-shirts featuring profanity.
10. Have at least two stepchildren, each with a different surname.

The Shatner Incident: Well, looks like they farked themselves out of plenty of qualified, competent veterans who are looking to go into law enforcement after their contract is up.

The fewer ex-military in the police, the better. They're already too militarized as it is in many places. I am old enough to remember when cops didn't dress and act like soldiers.

You must not work in a real job.

Everyone I know who did anything that wasn't shuffling paper from one side of a desk to the other has a tattoo or seventeen. Zookeepers, contractors, teachers, leather workers, artists, authors, even nurses and doctors.

So if tattoos interfere with your work's "productivity" chances are your job is so mind numbingly boring that it probably shouldn't exist. Anything worth doing won't be slowed down by some ink.
