Bottle means less pasteurization if any.

Bottle is always better. Never has any beer commercial told you that bottle is better. Because big beer loves canned and pasteurization.

Bottles are pasteurized as well. You really don't know what you are talking about.

Certain beers don't get pasteurized in the bottle depending on the locality. A famous example is England's imported Guinness. The bottles were unpasteurized but the draught was pasteurized. There have been many cases like this where

Canned beer is always pasteurized and at times bottled beer is as well. Re-read my comment. American beers typically don't matter because they are more carbonated and less hoppy than other beers. The pasteurization doesn't destroy the taste when there is no taste to be had.

No need to reread your comment. You said "Bottle means less pasteurization if any" implying that few to no bottles are pasteurized. I stand by my statement of you not knowing what you are talking about. I'll expand it to say that you are a generalizing douche, to lump American beer together the way that you did.

Question for people who think beer from cans tastes metallic: do you think draft beer tastes metallic? That's stored in a giant metal container...

rockforever: American beers typically don't matter because they are more carbonated and less hoppy than other beers.

This is not accurate. With the exception of mass market lagers and the like, American beers are known for being more hoppy than their counterparts elsewhere, hence American IPAs, American barleywines, and so on.

rockforever: Canned beer is always pasteurized

This is not accurate. Surly Brewing, for instance, one of the most acclaimed brewers of canned beers right now, do not filter or pasteurize their beers. Sierra Nevada "can conditions" the canned versions of their pale ale, just as the bottled version is bottle conditioned. New Belgium does the same with canned Fat Tire. And so on.

fickle floridian: Whatever form it comes in, it always seems to end up in my can.

You're doing it wrong. Though the alcohol in beer readily absorbs into mucous membranes, it's a lot more enjoyable when you drink it.

The only problem with cans is that I can't clean them out and reuse them for bottling homebrew.

Other than that, I'm ok with this.

If you're writing about American macro lagers, then say that. Otherwise you end up sounding like you're ignorant of the microbrewing trends of the past 20+ years.

Theres something quintessentially American about the IBU arms race, as every small brewer tries to see who can rape your palate with the hoppiest IPAs scientifically possible.

Can I leave a wakeup call for when every small brewer stops making beer that either tastes like chewing on hops or so thick and sweet that it tastes like someone put a snickers bar in a blender?

I like my Busch Light out of bottles that stay cooler longer, but if I'm going to pour a nice ale, I'd rather it be delivered via can.

American craft brewing, especially the west coast, seems to think the only good way to make a beer is with a shiatton of hops. Thank god for beers like Church Key. More brewers need to make pilsners and lagers for those of us who'd like an alternative to MillerCoors etc that isn't a Hefe or the like.

Most Craft brewers have a wide variety Of styles available for all types of customers. It wouldn't make sense economically to only make "hop bombs" and the like.

I find the hops stay hoppier in cans, and they are easier to carry.

I've never tasted a bottled version and a canned version of the same beer, so I have no idea how cans effect taste.

Keweenaw Brewing exclusively uses cans for distribution, and has been for many years. This is nothing new, other than more "major" breweries are getting into it and therefore is hip and new.

The more beers available in cans the better. I can't drink out of glass while floating on the rivers of Missouri, but I can drink out of cans. I'm tired of drinking cheap beer on the river.

shoegaze99: But I don't think there is anything wrong with recognizing that pouring your beer is almost always preferable to drinking from the bottle or can.

Well that's because it is. Also, I was ranting about these people not realizing that beer tastes different out of a can. It farkING DOES taste different out of a can...if you drink it directly from the can...the way the vast majority of people who drink beer are likely to drink it.

Plastic Trash Vortex: No, the cans do not make beer taste 'metallic', you are imagining it and still wrong.

The fark they dont. Drink a beer right from the can and say that. The difference is so shockingly obvious its not funny, you pompus prick.

LOL you can't come in calling someone a pompus prick if you're gonna act like one yourself. Take the blind taste test and realize it probably is your brain and discrimination making you think that. Otherwise, you'd biatch that a coke tastes different in a can too.

Bottles are awesome but I would be very happy if there was a bigger variety in cans. On boating trips we don't take glass which limits the choices of beer by quite a bit.

I'm not talking about 'the taste test'. I'm talking about (as I said plainly above) drinking beer right from the can. Why do I quantify it that way? BECAUSE THATS HOW MOST PEOPLE WHO DRINK CANNED BEER DRINK IT!! I drink bottled beer because it tastes better drank directly from its shipping container. Many people do not have the opportunity to poor their beer into a glass. Truth be told, drinking beer from a glass is the way to go, which means draught beer is the best (as long as the damn piping is clean and the keg isnt soured). But to say that beer drank directly from a can tastes the same as a bottole and that people who dont think so are delusional...well...yeah, you're being a prick.

Uh huh so pouring a beer from a can into a glass magically takes the metallic taste away? You know how dumb that sounds? If you don't like drinking beer out of a can then don't do it, but don't claim you know more than the brewer themselves. And you know that drinking beer from a keg or a can is still drinking the beer from it's shipping container right? They don't ship it in something else and then bottle or can it in the store genius level.

LOL duuude. You are saying that EVEN IF YOU DRINK BEER FROM THE CAN that you still can't tell that its from a can?

That's it. You seriously dont know what the fark you're talking about, because that just isnt farking true.

I know they coat cans now, and I'm sure it helps a lot, I would think, so my metallic quip may not even apply these days, but before then (I think Keystone was the first to advertise the 'coated can' thing) drinking beer from a can absolutely DID impart it a metallic taste. This is fact, not supposition.

The 'shipping container' quip was my exact point, kegs and bottles do taste different. Why a keg doesnt taste metallic I dont really know, I'm not an expert, and now I'm positive that neither are you.

However, I am willing to get a couple of tall boys after work tonight to give this hypothesis a thorough workout. I'll let you know tomorrow ;)

Then answer me this. If a can farks the taste up so much, then why doesn't a coke taste different out of the can than it does in the bottle? It's because it's all in your mind. You've conditioned yourself to believe that beer in a can somehow tastes different, so therefore you will always believe it.

The taste doesn't magically change when it's poured out of the can. So go do the blind taste test.

He's talking about drinking directly from the can.

And despite his, err, energy on the subject, he's right. If you are drinking from the can it will taste different than if you pour it and then drink. The reason is simple. Your mouth will be on aluminum and your nose will be right near aluminum. This will impact the taste when compared to drinking right from a bottle or pouring into a glass and drinking. It's half the reason why people recommend pouring it in the first place.

Despite his, err, energy, Madbassist1 has acknowledged several times that if you pour your drink into a glass, the source of the beer, bottle or can, should make no difference on how it tastes. He is only talking about when you drink directly from the can. And he's right.
