Greta_VanHouten: NBC never offered real Olympic coverage, just Olympic highlights. I wonder how bad they'll butcher the closing ceremony.

And this is why I have become a believer in Tunnelbear. After the butchery NBC performed in the opening ceremony, I will be watching it live on BBC

I'm waiting for tomorrow morning. Spain versus USA. I'm predicting a total slaughterhouse. In the Spain vs Russia game the Spain dude passed the ball to the ref... Good job dufus! It was like the battle of the losers.

IMDWalrus: For all the time NBC spends covering diving, you think they'd do a better job of explaining things like...the difficulty, or the scoring, or what they're doing well or botching.

I have gathered that splashing is bad.

Ok, now I'm rooting against this guy.

The BBC commentators went the other direction.

I've heard so much about the precise mathematics of the scoring and the nuances of splash and foot arch that i could pretty much guess the score for every dive perfectly by the end.

there their theyre: Has a diver ever lost his speedo?

yep, a springboard guy in this years one sure as hell did, pic was posted in a thread here there even, pretty sure the person who posted the bare ass underwater pic got a timeout too lol

Oh, look. More puffy crap about Tom Daley.

And there's David Beckham in the crowd.

Unrelated, but I saw Doc Emerick covering water polo and Pierre McGuire doing basketball in the past few days. As a hockey fan who's had to suffer through their commentary, I apologize to everyone for NBC inflicting them on you. You deserved better.

Big splash = bad
Small splash = Good

That's why someone created a splash meter.

Whining about the Chinese divers' scores. Oh shut your face.

So, do Lochte and Phelps just spend the second week of the olympics banging as many hotties as possible?

You'd think they would have tried to get someone like Greg Louganis on their diving commentary. He's there, but apparently just as a spectator

Probably there as a guest of a corporate sponsor. He gets a free trip, prime seats in exchange for glad-handing and drawing people to their corporate suite.

Jesus. They can't even pronounce the Chinese diver's name consistently. One minute they say" Q-Bo", next time they say "Chu-Bo".

Speaking of springboard, I don't think I've seen it at all this year. Why all platform and no springboard? Is it all about "no Americans leading in that event"?

2012-08-11 10:17:24 PM

Selector: Makes the race more interesting too, in my opinion.

Agreed. I can recall many a 1,500, mile, 3,000 and 5,000 back in the the late 80s through the 90s, and even after, where you'd see a runner just take it out, even at a meet where in theory they could have rabbits, just to thin the crowd out. Sure it didn't always work, but it made for some awesome races. And of course there was never an American involved. Sometimes the winner was whoever managed to not tighten up and run out of gas. You'd see runners kicking to try to catch the leaders, but the leaders themselves had no kicks to speak of. As pure strategy it's dicey, but if you don't have a finishing kick to match the best in the race, it can work out.

If I have learned one thing from diving in this olympics, it is that there are a multitude of ways to pronounce seemingly random assemblies of two letters.

There was a week of bloody springboard shown relentlessly in the UK.

The audience cringes at that dive, but he's underwater and doesn't hear it.

Would it kill NBC to show a super slow-mo shot of a diver hitting the water? Or a shot looking up from under the water?

You're not an Olympic athlete the day after winning a medal who could have his pick from the 1%ers of hotties that night.

It screams of "Fark it, she'll do, I'm drunk".

Up from under water might not come out the way your thinking but a pan shot from under the platform just above water might be cool

Whoa! Two not-so-good dives from the Chinese divers. Let's see if Boudia and Daley can capitalize on this opportunity.

They showed every round of springboard synchro diving it seems like. I swear if there was diving NBC showed it in primetime.

In NBCs defense I have seen a lot of Olympics. Of course I'm a stay at home Dad with 2 TVs. Kids still haven't seen a cartoon since the Opening Cermony.

One hour of prime-time Olympic coverage devoted to WWII? F' you, Tom Brokaw, for bringing a 70-year-old war to the last weekend of the Olympic party.

BBC radio today did a whole piece on "are the rumours true" about the Olympic Village debauchery.

Then there's these:

I still say this would be a better event if they had to catch a tennis ball thrown by a friend in mid air.

Ok, we get it. Jump off platform, spin a lot, don't splash when you hit the water.

Can we go back to track and field now?

Deciding who is the best out of 20 is impossible. Just like multiple meets in the 100m

That's a good question. I think when you get to the finals you get 3 dives, semis you have 5, prelims maybe 7.

Certainly. Technical term: "dat azz".

So NBC mentioned Daley was allowed a re-dive, which the judges can allow in "exceptional circumstances", and didn't say why Daley was allowed one this time - can someone fill me in?

I can understand the rounds, cutting the field down. What I can't understand is why NBC has decided to air every dive in prime time,
