"Andy swam through five hundred yards of shiat smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards...that's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile....and died."

Yeah..what the hell is up with the tag?

The dumbass is for dying in a voluntarily dangerous activity?

Anyways, I find it somewhat strange that this type of event happens during the Olympics

At least he died doing what he loved, if he loved drowning.

When did they start letting people swim in the hudson? When did that water become safe for contact with human skin?

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of an athlete at today's Aquadraat Sports Ironman U.S. Championship," said Emily Vicker, a spokeswoman for Rubenstein Communications, which represents the competition.

You really had to get that plug in there for the sponsor of the event didn't you?

And why exactly isn't the Ironman Triathlon NOT an Olympic event anyway? Decathletes claim to be "the world's greatest athletes" but I think the winner of an Ironman has a better claim to the title

It's still a relatively new sport, just introduced in 2000. My understanding is that one of the stipulations the IOC put in was that the event had to be completed in under 2 hours.

Now that the popularity has increased, maybe that can start adding sprint and IM distances.

I'm probably misunderstanding what you say was introduced in 2000. I know that the Ironman Triathalon was around when I was young; Wikipedia confirms that it started in 1978.

My bad, triathlon is a new sport at the Olympics - introduced in 2000. I believe that it was a struggle to even get it in, hence the 2 hour time restriction by the IOC.
