The headline is good, I'll give it that, but is this really news? Every year, some kid goes home from big time schools because they miss their hometown ho and momma's cooking, and they actually have to put forth effort to play and stay.

I think that's secondary. A couple of years ago, a local kid (who saw a lot of playing time as a running back) left Iowa after his freshman year because of "personal issues." It later became known that he got both his girlfriend and his roommate's girlfriend pregnant.

I think the kid was telling the coach about what he saw after he left the team speculating about why he wasn't there.

Since I assumed this was a case of mental illness or a suicide attempt being covered up, I looked into it since I was curious. Best I can tell from psychotic Nebraska fans arguing on the internet is that it's a combination of something with his girlfriend and the coach is a total dick with a history of driving players away. I'm not sure if he knocked up his girlfriend or whatever, but it seems to be the accepted story that the coach was waving the depth chart around as a threat and the kid basically told him "If you've got somebody better, play them," and bounced.

Apparently they've gotten in touch with the kid and are trying to woo him back.

What?? St. Pelini, patron saint of F-bombing refs on live television is a total dick? Nowai!

Seriously though, anyone know how big a deal this really is? I'm a total fair-weather fan who can barely name the QB and annually gets his hopes up only to have them dashed by week 6, so if this means we're farked already this year, I'd rather know in advance.

And looking at Nebraska's schedule, I'm thinking they're an 8-4 or 9-3 team...maybe 10-2 if they can somehow avoid their annual embarrassing home loss to a vastly inferior opponent.

We do not have an annual embarrassing home loss to a vastly inferior opponent. Some years we do just fine at home but lose on the road to one vastly inferior opponent.

Most of the speculation that I've heard is on Barney Cotton being the douche in this situation, not Pelini.

Hope this kid comes back, he's got talent and we need all the talent we can get on offense...

Well, the last the years:

2009 - Iowa State
2010 - Texas
2011 - Northwestern

Callahan seems to have kept the truly embarrassing losses on the road, though.

This will be a problem this year. Michigan and Wisconsin destroyed Nebraska last year. This year, in Nebraska, the games will be closer, but Nebraska will still lose. Meanwhile, the huskers travel to Northwestern, Ohio State and Michigan State.

All 5 of these games will be loses. Maybe Nebraska finishes 7-5. A loss to Iowa in Iowa is also possible, it's entirely possible Nebraska finishes 6-6 and plays in the Little Caesar's bowl against Western Michigan.

AKTurkey: All 5 of these games will be loses.

If an at-the-time 3-5 Northwestern team can beat an at-the-time 7-1 Nebraska team, we can upset Michigan.

/or does that kind of shiat only happen to us?

This is true. It's equally possible that Nebraska beats Iowa, Northwestern, Ohio State and possibly upsets Michigan or Wisconsin at home. After drubbing Michigan State last year, it's also possible they could do it again in East Lansing. Nebraska could go 11-1.

/as a Wolverine, this is not my ideal scenario

Plus, he couldn't seem to shake the habit of enthusiastically tossing his helmet into the air and twirling.

The unsportsmanlike conduct penalties could've been real drive killers.

Offensive line coach that isn't qualified to sell shoes at Sears.
