Maybe Obama figured he'd be assassinated as soon as he was elected, so Biden would be the next President. I sort of expected that too.

Exactly.

I think the GOP puppetmasters convinced Ryan to agree to this to put him in position to run in 2016. Paired with a true moderate, he might even have a chance.

Unless Hillary runs.

Leave it to Willard Romney, international man of principle, to get himself bullied into being bold and independent.

Make no mistake. In his decision to make Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from Wisconsin, his running mate, Romney finally surrendered the tattered remnants of his soul not only to the extreme base of his party, but also to extremist economic policies, and to an extremist view of the country he seeks to lead. This is unimaginable to those of us who lived here under Romney's barely perceptible stewardship of the Commonwealth (God save it!). If he'd even hinted that he agreed with a fraction of a smidgen of a portion of the policies on which Ryan has built his career, Romney would have been hanging from the Sacred Cod by the middle of 2005. And it's hard not to notice that the way the decision got leaked - in the dead of a Friday night, with the Olympics still going on, after two weeks in which Romney and his campaign had demonstrated all the political skills of a handball - fairly dripped with flopsweat.

(And how'd you like to be poor Tim Pawlenty, being told by Tagg Romney that he'll be riding in the roof carrier to Iowa again, with nothing in his future except, maybe, a couple of bucks at Christmas.)

Yeah, it seems like it. The Fox News clip is from a slightly different part of the speech than the "next president" part. Worked out great for Fox News. They get to show Romney introducing Ryan all they want, but don't have to remind anybody about the gaffe if they don't feel like it.

Right now Romney is talking about how after Paul Ryan's dad died, his family got together and taught him the meaning of hard work which enabled him to succeed. No mention that Ryan got social security benefits because his dad died which paid for his college.

Dunno. You're asking the wrong guy. To me, the entire Mitt Romney candidacy -- hell, the entire Republican primaries and 2012 election season -- seems to me to be a way for the RNC to rid itself of a bunch of losers by "giving them their shot" when the real people in charge know they have no chance to win this year. Adding Ryan to the mix just seems to support that narrative. Republicans out there should be embarrassed by this candidacy, even worse than last time around. The party has gone off the rails.

I don't see how any of this is a good idea for Romney. He announces Paul as his VP pick during media dead space, and then Paul goes on the offensive with a blatant rewriting of history that stuff that happened ONE YEAR AGO. Is Paul following Romney, or are Romney's owners telling Paul to take the fight to Obama?

Either way, Paul got his ass handed to him in early 2011. He should know better than to anger the Obama Campaign.

Bush had several advantages that Romney doesn't. He could play to dumb southern vote by successfully pretending to be a dumb hick himself. Those who were only interested in the bottom knew him as fellow elitist from the east coast looking out for their interests and voted/funded him appropriately. He played well to the Jesus crowd and appeared to be a true believer of the right sect to the religious bigots. And he was able to play his military experience and later his wars into convincing voters he was better on defense. And he avoided unnecessarily pissing off minorities by selecting some for his cabinet.

The only thing out of that list that Romney can count on right now is the elitist vote/funding, and maybe he can pull some more libertarians in with Paul Ryan. Romney also doesn't have the advantage of going against weak campaigns like Al Gore or John Kerry ran, he going up against Barack Obama, who previously ran the best campaign I've seen in my lifetime. Plus Romney isn't even a likeable person, a quality that both Bush and Obama share which gives them yet another distinct advantage.

There is still a small chance that Romney can win, but it would require something completely out of the blue which nobody sees coming at this point. If the status quo is maintained until the election Romney doesn't stand a chance.

I for one am feeling a little dissed by Romney and the GOP.

The best they could do is a lousy Congressman? They couldn't find someone farther along the cursus honorum than that?

Aside from Dick Cheney (who rigged his own selection), all of our executive branch candidates for the last 24 years have come with at least Gubernatorial or Senatorial chops.

Dick Cheney was also secretary of defense before becoming VP (and was house minority whip when he was in congress). Congressman is Ryan's only experience, and one who is only known because of his attempt to destroy medicare. He literally could have picked any of over two hundred other congressman who had less negative baggage than Ryan does for gaining the votes of moderates and independents.

I think you guys are missing why it was done the way it was.

By telling everyone on a Saturday he guarantees a lot of people see and hear about it. And by Ryan going off on things from a year or two ago, Romney hopes people get distracted from the taxes.

EnviroDude: That's it. We can't elect a candidate that misspeaks from 57 states.

60 States. Are you unable to count? He said he had visited 57 with 1 more to go and 2 he could not go to. That makes 60 states. If you're going to criticize someone for misspeaking. try not to repeatedly fark up the math. Plus he did it once. Years ago. You've made the same math error how many times now? Even after having it pointed out? And you'll keep doing it, imagining that you're scoring points. Yet each time, you're only making yourself look more sad, desperate and dim.

At least Joe Bidens son had the stones to pick up a rifle

/not Mittens boys or Ryan

Biden didn't go to VietNam, so I guess he's got no stones.

I understand you cant follow cause and effect. What i do know of Mr Biden son is he chose to risk his life to protect America, which I believe is a family ethos.

I do not believe Mr Romney is righteous enough instill that in his children, that is my argument.

I encourage you to live a better life, be honost with yourself see your own failing.

rudemix: Do these things always seem so contrived and theatrical? The settings, the music and all? It's like Nuremberg minus a lot of red and black.

Not to mention the crowds

Notabunny: Wait until they decide (again) that the reason they lost in 1012 was because they ran a couple of RINOs who didn't extreme enough.

OK - isn't that taking the "retroactive" thing a LITTLE extreme?

:-)

Biden had asthma, the military couldn't take him regardless of whether he wanted to go (even now you can't join the army if you ever had asthma).

And just in case anyone tries to call BS on this one, from the Military.com FAQ, question 2 ("Is asthma a disqualifying condition?"):

Diagnosed with Athsma beyond age 12 is disqualifying, regardless of whether or not you use an inhaler. And yes they can check your medical records if something makes them suspicious, like an athsma attack at boot camp. This would lead to a discharge for fraudulent enlistment.

/Asthma is why I didn't join the Navy after High School.

Friday: Hey, Romney, Release your taxes!
Saturday: Hey, Romney picked Ryan for VP!
Sunday: Hey, under Ryan's tax plan, Romney would only pay 0.8% as an effective tax rate!
Monday: That reminds me, hey Romney, release your taxes!
