If it were HBO, I'd give it a try. Network TV? Pass.

It just isn't Cleopatra without the bathtubs full of spooge ?

Dear NBC: please remember that Cleopatra was known not for her beauty, but for her intelligence. She was born of generations of Greek inbreeding, and was married to her own brother as well.

Will the actors be real egyptians or just white folks with lots of mascara?

Good question. Of course, Egyptians then didn't look like Egyptians now (the various conquests and immigrations in the last 2000+ years shuffled genes quite a bit...)

Well, since neither Cleopatra nor any of the other members of the ruling Ptolemaic dynasty were Egyptians, it doesn't really matter.

And the real Cleopatra was probably not actually all that attractive. The Ptolemys weren't exactly inbred, but many accounts suggest that they had a bit of the Innsmouth look to them. It's hard to say for sure, since all the images of them tried to make them look attractive (when the ruling class wants a portrait, reality takes a backseat), and most of the people talking about how unattractive they were generally hated the Ptolemys, and hence aren't exactly unbiased.

The idea that the Cleopatra/Caesar/Antony triangle was romantic is pretty much entirely invented.

A new biography of Cleopatra, by Pulitzer winner Stacy Schiff, came out last fall. It's an interesting read if you're interested in the subject. I enjoyed it very much.

Whether Caesar or Antony or Cleo were ever truly in love with each other is up to question (I personally think they were), but Cleo did have children by both of them. As to a triangle, well, Caesar and Marcus loved each other, Marcus and Cleo mated, and Caesar and Cleo mated. The problem with it being a triangle is that only two legs were satisfied at any given time. Caesar was dead before Antony and Cleo hooked up, as he was having large-scale orgies with his wife, Fulvia, at the time of Caesar's assassination.

/Fulvia was a walking love dodecahedron while Marcus Antonius was just a massive slut.
//And Cleo was Macedonian Greek, dammit.

I really like the suggestion of Morena Baccharin, which is just about the only thing that Entertainment Weekly has done that I've ever liked.

She would be a good choice, but I don't see her leaving Homeland any time soon with all the critical buzz that show has gained. A show like that basically can make your career if you play your cards right.

I am always amazed whenever I see the bust of Nefertiti. It was made 3,300 years ago, over a thousand years before Cleopatra lived.
