More helpful tips for the media:

High Schools are not "hotbeds" of anything.

Everything that shoots bullets is not an "assault weapon."

And you don't have to present both sides of an issue if one side of the issue is a load of crap.

Honestly, if someone can't put up with getting insulted on the internet, their lack of fortitude may be a bigger issue. Besides, this is america.. In Text + small claims court = easy slander/libel victories if they push it too far. They either get humiliated in court, or they have to pay a default judgement. Past that, the millenials just need to realize the world is not going to praise them by default like their parents.

Dude. You're on FARK. A website where members track people down in real life, and try to mess with their family and professional career because you said something bad about them.

You should know full well about this.

In a presentation late last week to American Psychological Association, two nationally representative surveys totaling nearly 5,000 pre-teens and teens found that 15 percent said they'd been bullied on the Internet during the past year are too thin-skinned to have discussions online.

Seriously, if you can't handle people saying mean things, stick to circlejerk church forums or some other equally boring place for precious snowflakes. You can't expect everyone on the planet to censor themselves just because you're a pussy.

I saw a thing on Dr. Phil yesterday where a guest was talking about being cyberbullied on Xbox. 45-yo guy: "He said he knew where I lived and would killl my family. Now I live in fear and the cops won't do anything!" Yeah, some bored basementdweller trolled you--call the DHS!

Luckily, stalking laws cover that. That's long past the "said something mean about them" line, and well into flat-out illegal.

Doesn't bother me. It's the internet, you know? It helps that the last person to call my boss got called an "Insufferable, drama-mongering busybody." and hung up on. (Might I mention I have awesome people I work for?)

I honestly know I come off as an ass, sometimes. Partly, it's unintentional. Sometimes, it's just trolling. I've made some great friends on this site over the years, and had some pretty intellectual epiphanies because of it. Strangely enough, this place is awesome. As sad as it sounds, it has a special place in my life.

My real name is in my profile. It's not hard to find out one of the jobs I work at, because I'm on the website under my name. The only reason I even started listing it was because I was tired of getting accused of being a fake. The wierd thing is, threatening to show up to my house, when the only data the state databases list about me is the city I live in.

To be honest? I don't even remember. He was arguing with me, and another farker on here who's a DO student.

he may have had an email address in his fark profile that was used in a facebook/myspace or other type of public profile with his real name

ie there weren't enough degrees of separation between fark and his real life stuff

The thing I see with a lot of cyber bulling is that the person who claims they are being bullied usually started some shiat with somebody else on line and can't take the fact that they were bested.

My daughter is going into the seventh grade in a couple of weeks. I talk to her all the time about, well, everything and we have an atypically open and honest relationship. Say or think whatever you will about that but it's true; I bend over backwards and discuss things that are uncomfortable for me (ie try explaining the literal and contextual meaning of motherf#cker to your sweet little girl...ew).

She says there is nearly no bullying, real or cyber, in her middle school.

Principal and staff at her school are really, really great though, so that helps.

I do like to keep in mind that we're only hearing one side of the story.

Maybe Brony admitted to stealing from work, or how his company was schiestery and ripping people off and he didn't like it, but like, what could he do?, or a plethora of other things that would bring a legitimate complaint from normal members of society.

I've seen enough to know that, on fark, that sometimes the guy taking the piss out of the guy who's being an actual Asshole(capital A) is the one that gets the boot. All it takes is an errant complaint of say, namecalling, and poof, post removed, person banned. Everyone on fark calls someone else an idiot or some such on occasion, the rule is kind of a catch all. When and where it's enforced can be highly questionable as to the motives of the mod who deleted said post. I've seen more or less common but oppopsing opinion posts vanish like thin air. Sometimes it's a pure, X is against the rules, but not always. I've even reported people that were indeed busting many rules and being a vile detriment to the thread, and gotten banned myself(something fairly simple like "bubbles and planets are round for very scientific reasons, don't be an idiot" while their vitrol filled posts remained.

True, though, that if real personal information was posted(again, no evidence except personal trust....of some stranger on the internet), that's out of line, you don't do that. Wasn't it Spike Lee that released zimmerman's info....and it wasn't even zimmerman's info?

A link to an employer/company and an urge to call in and complain about X? Plausibly ok. Look at the Chic Fillet threads....(however you spell it)

What if Brony worked there, and posted that he backed the companies donations 100%. Would it be wrong to find that motivation enough to protest the establishment, send in complaints to the ceo that are unlreated to Brony but still a "threat to call the boss"? Many farkers think not.
(of course if you happen to hate gays or whatever, you'd naturally decide that yes, it's wrong).

Anyhow, just sayin'

With every generation comes technological advances and sociological changes. Naturally, new ways to abuse each other are quickly found and applied.

As of roughly 30 years ago, the news media found that exaggerating basically every problem gets them high ratings. A little lying never hurts either. I mean, look how well those supermarket tabloids are doing and Elvis is apparently busier now that he's dead than when he was alive.

Toss in the 'Monkey see. Monkey do.' situation where folks imitate krap they see on TV, learn from websites and copy from movies and things get rather messy. I read a report about some gang members blasting away at each other in close quarters for several minutes. A couple of hundred rounds were fired -- and no one was hit. Most held their guns sideways, as was popularized in movies, which throws the aim off. They did a good job of chewing up the homes and building around them but that was all.

Pipe bombs made by kids popped up all over the place only after the Internet displayed anarchist websites helpfully telling you how to make explosives from cleaning supplies and things found around the house.

Then the news media spread the information even further by making sure everyone within broadcast range not only knew about this trend, but where to find the instructions.

Naturally, a percentage of the younger generation promptly looked them up on the internet and found out how to make all sorts of interesting things.

Sensationalism sells.

You can see that in movie trailers, where the clips are edited carefully to make the thing appear more exciting than it actually is, even if it includes combining scenes into new ways that will not show up in the production.

Creative lying.

ongbok: The thing I see with a lot of cyber bulling is that the person who claims they are being bullied usually started some shiat with somebody else on line and can't take the fact that they were bested.

Somewhat this.

Everyone believes there should never be repercussions from their actions, and get wild and vehement, downright evil(if you believe in that sort of tripe), and act all surprised and hurt when they get to the point where people's defense mechanism of fight/flight triggers. Justification via provocation deserves at least a little bit of attention now and again. Sometimes Snooki getting decked for being a provoking loudmouthed aggrandizing biatch is just that, not a *gasp* man hitting a woman to make himself feel tough.(actually don't know the story behind that, but it sounds likely enough)

If you troll hard enough, or are actually a big enough asshole, maybe, just maybe, despite the legality of the issue, a very large portion of society would feel like you deserve something... We've all run into people who piss us off that much, ghandi like claims aside, you know it for the truth don't bother claiming to be high and mighty in this regard.

/collective "you"

Moral of the story, try and be a little considerate, if you decide to go all out on someone, don't be surprised if you end up paying for it in some shape or form. Regardless to popular belief, our interactions here are not all that much different than real life and indeed are part of reality.

Anyone who plays games on XBOX live knows that there's a lot of terrible crap people say to eachother, and most farkers hold those kinds of 13 year old punks in disdain, because you just don't talk like that to people in real life. Well, people who get that point, know that fark really isn't all that much better, we curtail it some, sure, and it's in text, sure, but we convey the same hatreds and animosity all of the time.

Why is anyone surprised when there is a repurcussion for such behavior? 2 words: Spoiled biatches
