From the FARQ:

Calling out of other Farkers (in headlines): As odd as this may sound, not everyone wants attention on Fark. Specifically mentioning a fellow Farker in a headline or post (where the named Farker isn't participating) generates attention to a Farker who didn't intend it. This is not welcome on this site. If you have something to say to a particular Farker (and it isn't abusive), check their profile for an email address and go directly to the source. Comments and headlines about specific Farkers will likely be deleted, as not everyone needs or wants to see their name in bright lights, and most often, the attention is undesired.

Was going to say, I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Also, it's too bad the first quarter of the season won't be played this year.
Although, if the owners get a bit more of the pie and spread it around like they say they will, the smaller market teams will be better able to survive where they are...

If the admins had a problem with this headline, they wouldn't have greened it.

Despite what the FARQ says, the powers-that-be around here occasionally bend their own rules and allow farkers to be called out in headlines.

Doc Daneeka: Good for Phoenix. I really hope they can make it work.

we had this discussion several months ago but i'll restate what i said then......in the late 90s, the City of scottsdale was approached about putting the hockey venue at the SE corner of like, Scottsdale / McDowell, the former site of the Los Arcos Mall. Scottsdale didn't want to pony up the money for it. had it been built there, it would be about 10 minutes west of the 101 int he lucrative Scottsdale market, about 10 minutes east of "downtown" Phoenix, and about a 3 iron from Tempe. Fair to say, "centrally" located all thigns considered. I have no doubt that if the Yotes were in Scottsdale, they would be HUGE. instead they play in Glendale which is a pain in the ass to get to.

so, the bluehairs in scottsdale didn't want it, it never happened. so instead of reaping hte benefit of...hmm...i think the idea was offically shiatcanned around 1999, so let's say 13 years. instead of 13 years of sales tax revenue, the second level investment from businesses that inevitable appear around stadiums, intangible value like "civic pride" or whatever, Scottsdale has reaped 13 years of ZERO. Nothing! no rents, no investment, no jobs, no nothing.

now, tihngs might have changed in the past 4-5 months, but I drove by the Los Arcos site recently and it was fenced off. just a huge chunk of unused land. Scottsdale still can't decide what to do with it.

so good luck Phoenix Coyotes. i just wish Scottsdale hadn't been so godamn intransigent.

It makes me wonder why the Yotes and Cards chose Glendale, nothing is there and getting is a pain in the ass. Both teams most likely had suffered but Super Bowl XLII probably gave Glendale a crapload of cash and it may be that way for XLIX

Don't forget, Cardinal Stadium was thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to being placed on the Gila River Reservation. Can you freaking imagine a stadium where WIld Horse Pass currently is?

i forget specifically how it happened, but i think it boiled down to the Maricopa county referendum that established the TSA had language to the effect of, "the TSA shall put a stadium in maricopa county on state owned land" and at the 11th hour, the AG or county attorney, whoemever, said the reservation land was owned by the tribe or feds and long story short, the deal fell apart.

some issue about the law's language not matching the ownership of the reservation land.

Yep. We're currently hiding in massive underground bunkers waiting for the day when Toronto makes the playoffs again(I'm thinking another three years at the earliest) at which point we will emerge and flood the hockey world with our loud, ignorant braying once again.

We've gone over this 8,457 times, but once again...

-Scottsdale was the original spot for the Coyotes arena (where Los Arcos was, for those who know the area)
-Scottsdale City Council dragged their feet
-Glendale stepped in
-The real estate mogul who owned the team at the time said "deal!"
-And then sold the team to Jerry Moyes, which led to the bankruptcy because he's a greedy SOB (for baseball fans, he was Frank McCourt before you knew who Frank McCourt was)

The Cardinals stadium would probably not be in Glendale if not for the Coyotes arena.

I had a couple of non-hockey related conversations with him in playoff threads after the games finished and he was fine. But on certain hockey related issues he would brook no disagreement. IIRC correctly, one of the big things that would set him off were hockey franchises in the US in places where it doesn't snow, especially the ones that were having trouble making money. He thought Canada deserved, and could economically support, those franchises. This led to him making many comments in hockey threads about how the Coyotes were doomed and how he couldn't wait until they were shipped back to the Great White North where they belonged.

CSB: I had a friend in law school who's been a huge Coyotes fan since the franchise arrived in Phoenix. Glad to see this deal got done, now go finish up the new CBA.

Well, to be fair, the troll who was called out talked shiat for 2 months straight towards me and other Arizona farkers during the playoffs and never received punishment or saw his posts deleted. He even brought it up in an Olympics thread last week. So he deserved to be called out.

But as long as the rules are being enforced, that's all I ask for.

Jamison was in charge of the Sharks for a few years before working on the Coyotes deal. He knows the NHL. He knows how to make money in a non-traditional market. And he's coming in at the best time possible, with the run to the Conference Final 3 months ago.

/Still convinced that if we hadn't run into the Kings, Doaner would've been lifting the Cup.

Don't worry about Toronto, they'll get a second team. That team will also get the cup before the Leafs.

I agree, the trouble is Phoenix may have to make a run to the second round almost every year in order to get people in the seats, and the West is so damn competitive just getting to the post season could be a stretch. Making money with the Sharks wasn't overly complicated(even though it did take some creativity) because they were a top team in the west for the better part of a decade, and if the season starts late(if at all) there's a whole lot of goodwill down the crapper.

True, but had the AG or whatever not pulled the ol' switcheroo on Gila River, the stadium isn't in Glendale.

and bizarrely, 9/11 also affected Cardinal Stadium; another site was land on Tempe, generally about a mile southwest of the Phoenix Zoo. Tempe had zoned the land and it was slated as the #1 choice. Then 9/11 happens, and the City of Phoenix says that site would be in the flight path of Sky Harbor (true) and in the post-9/11 world, fears of a hijacked plane being crashed into a stadium of 70,000 people helped derail the Tempe option.

I'd say both of those were larger factors than the Coyotes, in terms of Cardinal Stadium being where it is. The Gila River option was virtually a done deal. all parties had signed off on it. The NFL and the Bidwills had a press conference witht he tribe as i recall. that shiat was in the bag, but for the lawmakers intervening at the last possible moment.

The bolded part I agree with 1000%. If the Coyotes deal wasn't done by September and the season ended up being delayed; I'd say go ahead and kill off the franchise, along with Columbus and maybe 1-2 more because they wouldn't be able to recover from another lockout.

Keep in mind- the Coyotes' arena opened 7 months before the last lockout started. They played half a season in that building before the league was shut down for a year. If that doesn't happen, I don't things end up this farked up.

/Obviously, the lockout doesn't prevent Jerry Moyes from being a fraudulent asshole.

Actually, it has everything to do with the Leafs. There's a rule that says a new team or relocated team can't be placed within a certain distance of an existing team's home arena. I want to say 50 miles, but I'm not certain of that. The Leafs flatly refuse to give up part of their market.

Still don't understand how an entire country has to "suck it" because the Yotes aren't moving to Quebec or Ontario. Did we say "suck it, USA" when a second Atlanta team moved back to Canada? No, we said "Suck It, Atlanta"

Except the Leafs aren't concerned with losing any part of their market. The ACC is sold out every game, LeafsTV and merchandising is a license to print money and they're still the biggest draw on HNIC. The team that would suffer the most from another franchise in the area isn't even Canadian.

Yes, I'm saying it's the Sabres. Like it or not they draw a lot of fans from across the border. Another team in that area can and will take a lot of money out of Buffalos pockets, and by extension the pockets of one Jeremy Jacobs.
