So wait... this means the end of Ryan in politics, doesn't it?

He's a congressman, so he needs to go up for reelection, but he can't if he's on the presidential ticket, which he'll lose.

Boy, he's really gambling with long odds. Could be VP, but most likely he'll just be out of the game. On to being a lobbyist.

rynthetyn: Mitt must have written of Florida altogether. This is an even dumber pick than Palin.

Can he win the election without winning Florida? As far as I'm aware, he can't.

But he has to flip almost every swing state, so his chances aren't that great anyway.

Paul Ryan said:

"The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand", and "I grew up reading Ayn Rand and it taught me quite a bit about who I am and what my value systems are, and what my beliefs are. It's inspired me so much that it's required reading in my office for all my interns and my staff."

Shortly thereafter

"I reject her philosophy. It's an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person's view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas. Don't give me Ayn Rand"

Isn't a beautiful thing to watch when someone repudiates a lifelong philosphy so they can pander to social conservatives?

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Wasteland: Wow. I guess a) they're writing off minority vote-pandering as political unobtainium this year, and b) Ryan must've pissed off a few too many GOP decision-makers along the way, if they're hanging him out to dry with Mittens.

After Boehner looked like a moron herding cats after the debt ceiling debacle, spearheaded by Ryan, Ryan kind of went away for a while and restricted himself to relatively noncontroversial anti-Obama sentiments. Maybe the crying orange has more political chops (or a greater thirst for revenge) than we gave him credit for. Ryan was posturing for Boehner's job, and now Ryan is willingly placing his neck in the hangman's noose.

With Ryan, Romney has officially given up on the senior vote. So here's my prediction: Females: 12 point lead for Obama. Seniors: 9 point lead. Minorities 45% lead for Obama. Homosexuals: will Romney even get 1%?

So lets see, what demographic can Romney/Paul actually win? Rich white men.

Gawd, this election could make Mondale's loss against Regan seem like a squeaker in comparison.

He raved about Rand in no less than five interviews from 1996 to 2005. She got him through his childhood.

Maybe he's not concerned about the future all that much, with his life expectancy and genetics and all.

In his State, he can run for President or VP and for State office at the same time.
If he gets elected to P/VP, his State position is filled by a special election.

ontariolightning: this Paul Ryan guy wouldn't be electable in Canada

look at this

Paul Ryan on Gun Control
Click here for 7 full quotes on Gun Control OR background on Gun Control.
Voted YES on prohibiting product misuse lawsuits on gun manufacturers. (Oct 2005)
Voted YES on prohibiting suing gunmakers & sellers for gun misuse. (Apr 2003)
Voted YES on decreasing gun waiting period from 3 days to 1. (Jun 1999)
Rated A by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record. (Dec 2003)
National cross-state standard for concealed carry. (Jan 2009)
Ban gun registration & trigger lock law in Washington DC. (Mar 2007)
Allow reloading spent military small arms ammunition. (Apr 2009)

Meh, everything but the waiting period one is agreed with by like 90% of the electorate. If he's got an A from the NRA he's probably supported something far crazier, like removing the age 18 restriction on ammo sales in most states or not doing background checks at all.

What I'm saying here is that that list makes him look like a relatively sane centrist, when he isn't.

//A national standard for CC would clear a lot of things up. CC reciprocity is the reason I always kind of snicker to myself when people insist that states are totally legally obligated to respect other states' marriage licenses in gay marriage threads, it's a ridiculous tangle of conditional bullshiat.

There is a path without Florida, I can't remember off the top of my head what states he'd have to get for Florida not to matter, but it can be done. I think it involves flipping Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. I don't see how Paul Ryan makes that easier though because I don't know what states he's going to help Mittens pick up that he wouldn't have gotten already.

Actually, if Romney loses, the base will chalk it up to Romney not being conservative enough. I really don't think Romney will be blamed for Romney's failures, the same way that St. Sarah was exempt from what were seen as McCain's liberal leanings. Win or lose, Paul will still be in the game.

Oh, whatever. McCain's not nearly as shiat a candidate nor as shiat a statesman as Romney, and Ryan's nowhere near as bad as Palin. The only similarity is that the VP pick is the equivalent of putting the gun to your temple and pulling the trigger for both campaigns.

Glad I can stop thinking about this, it's essentially over now, looks like.

/ Then again, if he did that he might very well lose 49 of 51 states. Maybe 50.
