Oh good, I clicked the link fearing it was Fort Calhoun again, but for once it wasn't our troubled plant.

One of the many times I returned from liberty call in the Navy completely drunk with several even drunker buds we were told by the quarterdeck watch to "make sure that really, really drunk guy gets into his rack".

I quickly replied "Rack ? Hell no. We gotta' get some coffee into this guy. He's starting up the reactor in 4 hours"

[/CSB]

In all honesty he wasn't the RO for the startup. Just the secondary watch

If people knew how drunk reactor department is whenever we start up they would freak out and replace the Navy with lasers from outer space or something. Start-up while hung over or drunk was a right of passage.

Have any of you ever even stepped foot in a nuclear power plant? It's an incredibly arduous task to change a lightbulb let alone break something without 5 people signing off. I think we're safe.

/former substation guy, kinda NERC-CIP qualified

residents worried that if the worker returned to the plant, something could have went wrong

Is that as opposed to: "If he comes and hits a button"?

In this case, subby kind of screwed up. The first two choices should always be someone whose performance would actually be improved by being drunk.

You can't put too much alcohol in a nuclear power plant supervisor.

2012-08-11 09:26:21 AM
Meh. Not scary.
If anything fails at a nuclear power plant it'll just fizzle. There won't be a thermonuclear explosion as so many people falsely believe.
If there's an explosion, it'll not be nuclear based, and worst case would result in a "dirty" explosion resulting in the nearby area being a wasteland.
....And this plant is near Detroit, so they've already got the wasteland part done.

There have been a few "incidents" in Navy nuclear power.

/Most of them weren't even my fault.
