Not surprised. More often than not, I hear about medical staff doing pretty much everything in their power to make it as traumatizing as possible for the woman, all in the name of getting her out of the hospital ASAP so they can get somebody else into that bed.

From the article:

Of those women who developed post-traumatic symptoms, 80 percent opted for natural childbirth without pain relief.

Does that sound like an over-managed hospital birth to you?

It sure sounds like not enough done on the hospital's part to assuage those women's fears about childbirth. You'd think the folks with the most experience on the subject would try to do more.

I had a scheduled c-section, epidhural (natch) and a demerol IV after. It was the highest I have been in my life.

There's a fair number of folks who benefit from making hospital births sound as terrible as possible in order to shunt money into the holistic birth industry.

"Of those women who developed post-traumatic symptoms, 80 percent opted for natural childbirth without pain relief"

Yeah. Seeing as human childbirth not uncommonly resulted in the death of the mother until the modern day, let's just eschew any medical advances that make it safer and easier.

"Other significant factors identified include the woman's body image (including discomfort with being in an undressed state for the relatively prolonged period of labor and undergoing elective Caesarean sections)"

I... don't know exactly how exactly you give birth fully clothed...

Maybe, but the "bed turnover" boogeyman is ridiculous. While I'm not sure if it's law or hospital policy, in Indiana you can't be released until 48 hours after the birth time. In every case I have known, parents were ready to throttle staff to get the hell out of the maternity ward. It's a long ass 3 days.

I can believe it. My wife was in labour for 8 hours when they finally realized that it just wasn't going to come out through the usual channels. Another hour prepping for, and doing the C-section surgery. As well, all that pushing did something to her shoulder (so that it basically ached incessantly). Recovering from that took her 3 months; I did all I could to help, but even then it was pretty brutal.

We broke up.

My wife was going to have one but my daughter decided she wanted out before they could administer it, she screamed you "You should have driven faster" or maybe she called me a bastard, there was a lot of noise in that room.

Usually your first childbirth is a drawn out affair with plenty of time to get to the hospital, get meds, get situated and have a child. My sister's however was born within maybe 4 hours of the first signs of labor. Went from the car straight to delivery, no time to use her birthing plan, no time for drugs, no time to call any family, no time for anything really. The dr almost missed the delivery but the nurses had things as under control as possible. She basically walked in, laid down, pushed and out came the baby. All natural, no pain relievers, nothing. She doesn't want any more kids heh.

I was there when both mine were born.

Both of them, at several points, the staff asked my Wife if she wanted pain killers. Each time she looked at them, smiled and asked, "what for?"

On the other hand, one of our friends, when the staff asked, her husband replied "NO." His wife promptly reached over, grabbed his testicles, squeezed and said, "I want them now."

Seriously, for all their modernization, Hospitals still suck for giving birth. Everything in the birthing room ,when the moment of truth comes, is geared for their convenience, not the patients comfort.

It's always a joy, isn't it?

"Let's have a baby!" "Gee, I don't know if I'm ready to be a dad"
"Let's have a baby!" "Gee, I don't know if I'm ready to be a dad"
"Let's have a baby!" "Gee, I don't know if I'm ready to be a dad"

Finally, a pregnancy. Then, in the delivery room:
"YOU DID THIS TO ME YOU SONOFAB*TCH!!!"

2012-08-10 05:21:27 PM
My wife did it without pain killers at all, was induced (which I understand is more painful), and had her taint torn open in the process. No complaints from her either.

I continue to assert that she is more of a woman that I am a man, by which I mean that her mastery of womanly things exceeds my mastery of manly things. I bow before her awesome endurance of pain. I am proud of her and the son she bore.

2012-08-10 05:21:41 PM
A full 80 percent of the PTSD group reported feeling discomfort with being unclothed, and 67 percent had previous pregnancies which they described as traumatic.

As compared to....? You've proved that 20% of the PTSD group were nudists, comfortable being naked.

The Mrs and I learned many women have birth experiences similar to their mother's.
Once my wife went into labor, our kiddo was born 2 1/2 hours later.

Mother-in-law was in labor 3 hrs for my wife's birth, and she labored 90 min for my wife's brother.

A couple of years after (ok, 4) after baby #1, a doctor offhandedly remarked we probably had PTSD because we waited so long to even start thinking about #2.

In retrospect, I'm pretty sure we did. Baby born at 33 weeks, both of us were in pretty bad shape. Doctors weren't sure if either if us would make it, so didn't let hubby in operating room during emergency c-section. They nicked the baby on the way out. Still has the scar.

2012-08-10 05:32:22 PM
My wife almost broke my arm. I swear I felt the bones touch (possible exaggeration, but still something moved in there). I didn't offer her anything to grab for the next 2 kids. Well I offered her something, but apparently that's what got us in that pregnant predicament in the first place.

We drove the 10 minutes to the hospital after second contraction, she had one in the car and had my daughter about 5 mins after getting to the room even the doctor said "Damn that was fast for a first baby"

2012-08-10 05:34:13 PM
Study flaw. How many of those women took a birth class one where they explain what natural means. I had one medicated and two unmediated. And no PTSD. Took classes with all three. Expected pain and got it.

I've also caught nearly 2000 babies. I can't figure out yet how to do it without seeing "down there". The women are not naked the entire labor. They are gowned and covered. Only uncovered when it is time to push. If that is so traumatic then we need to educate people on what childbirth entails.

Ha!

I guess I could have used some pain meds, seeing as how she tried her best to inflict as much pain on me while screaming, "YOU DID THIS TO ME YOU BASTARD!".

One tip: It may seem awesome to drive really fast to the hospital, don't. Resist the temptation, tough as it may be. Cops will just follow you to the hospital to give you the ticket. And it's more important to get mom and the baby there safely, rather than quickly.

Really? I didn't deliver in the poshest hospital in town with whirlpool tubs, etc. but when I was shown my birthing room they said several times "YOU are in charge" and also said "we will let you do anything you want short of lighting candles (fire department won't let them). You want 10 people in here, fine. You want the nurses to ban your mother from the room, fine. You want the lights out, fine (they had special spotlights). You want to blare AC/DC fine, the room is soundproof and the doctor can deal. You ever feel like we aren't doing what you want or that we aren't listening to you, here is the patient advocate's extension"

I feel in love with the nurse who held me and stroked my hair while I was finally getting my epidural at 9 (emergency c-section in another room yanked away my anesthesiologist right as she was about to put the needle in the first time).
