They damn well should raise the MPG again, the older ones had great mileage. My husband had a 1996 Tercel till the frame rusted out two years ago, and that thing got damn near 40 mpg on 87 octane. It was super uncomfortable for long trips but mostly he just drove it to work and back so that didn't matter much.

I'm not a big fan of them messing around with the body styles at this point though, I like where they are/were. My 2007 Matrix I think is the last of the good cargo space versions; after that they shortened the end/slanted the back to remove the side windows. When you go camping in the summer but don't want to drive an SUV the rest of the year, you need the space back there...

Say what you want, I don't see how you can get better quality in a car for less than $35-$40k.

Rock-solid-reliable, near-hybrid gas mileage with all seats occupied by adults and a very full trunk and the AC blasting against 100+ degree temperatures. Worth more than half it's new purchase price 10 years and 100K miles from the factory. Still pushes you down into your seat when you stomp on the pedal (not very hard, but hard enough to squeeze into even freeway traffic and keep up with it if you have to). Small enough to fit into a compact parking space and do 3-point turns on one-lane roads, but big enough that the elderly can get in and out with no problems and tall people don't have to take off their hats or slouch.

Other than "be sexy", I don't know what else you could ask of a car. It's like a sensible pair of shoes: a good investment for nearly anybody. I'm very, very happy I bought one.

I have an 05 Corolla and It is great.The one problem I have with it is the steering wheel is ummmm disinigrating. IT started last summer. Other than that she is a trooper. Only thing I hate is my damn commute is 40 miles so putting 80 miles a day on it sucks. Need to get that transfer grrrrrrrrrr

The last Toyota I felt was worth driving for the sake of driving was my '81 Celica. 107 bhp straight-4 and a hella-smooth five speed manual. I loved it. Toyotas are great rides, but they're not "fun" cars by any means.

I've never had the car that didn't need to see a mechanic eventually. The Corollas less than most. But, it never costs much. Ubiquitous cheap parts are one advantage of driving what is literally the most common car on planet Earth.

I have a Toyota 'rolla. It was part of an acquisition when I married my wife. I love it. Reliable as all hell. We keep it because it'll run like a goddamn Kenyan. We don't care about styling so much.

Uh, my SR20DE-powered '94 Sentra SE-R had burnt-out cylinder #3 long before 100k.

The SR20DE was a great engine for its initial day, but it's easily murdered by anything from Honda from the F20 onward (K series, especially). The F20C in my S2k took a beating with 50,000 miles in a single year, all of which were near-trackday levels of punishment. I would have blown an SR20 in half that.

Well, I guess it's mostly anecdotal. My kid brother has a 2000 Sentra SE with the SR engine. Maybe he's just showing off. Maybe he's just really angry. Maybe he just wants to abuse this thing for the sake of seeing how far he can push it. Yet every time I ride with him he hurts that poor beast without a shred of mercy. 4th clutch. 2nd water pump. A new alternator. Countless brake & tire replacements. He does run synthetic oil, though. Last week he stopped by - 230K miles and the farker just. keeps. going. No leaks on my driveway. No blue smoke from the tailpipe when he goes like Hell down the road. But something has to give...eventually.

Well, OK, let's compare apples to oranges:

S2K cost over 50% more and had over 70% more horsepower.

2000 S2K: $32k MSRP
240 hp

2000 Miata: $20k MSRP
140 hp

Which one is better? Hmm. But, but, the stigma! OMG! I need a MANLY tiny two-door convertible!

My first corolla: 1985 Chevy nova (actually my moms car) got me through high school and college awesome daily workhorse


My second corolla 1998: toyota corolla my first new car! got 38mpg (sticker only promised 32) 12 years old and still on the road and the engine still ticks like a clock


My third corolla: 2009 Scion XD bought bought in 2010 after I wrecked my beloved Scion TC and couldn't afford a new car. 3 years old and already has 66,000 miles can as a hatchback can haul nearly anything.


Corolla's aren't flashy but if you take care of them they will easily run for 20 years

I had a 96 Rolla that I loved and couldn't wait to see how many miles it would have on it when it finally gave up the ghost. Unfortunately, a pickup pulling in front of me killed it just before it hit 200k miles. Bought a Scion after it died but then a Suburban ended its life prematurely so now I'm on my second Scion and love it like crazy. I imagine if it died I'd go out and buy one just like it tomorrow.

/Rolla owner here - 1993 I got for free. Just 300 miles shy of hitting 250,000 - I average 39 to the gallon with the AC on, and not being easy on the gas. The 1.8liter motor is a derivative of the 4AGE, which in turn was ganked/copied from the British Cosworth BDA.

So, in reality, what you do have is an innocuous little car on the outside, with a variation of the BDA under the hood. In Japan, you could get the 'blacktop' 4AGE, which revs cleanly to 7800 over and over, as the day itself is long. Six speed manual gearboxes could also be had. There's numerous vids on the yoytubes of blacktop equipped Corollas kicking the crap out of B20 powered Hondas.

So, the Japanese took a screamer of a British engine, made it civilized, and then proceeded to create a cooled-down daily driver with serious history. The four link suspension in the AE101 Corolla series is also quite nice and progressive- unlike a lot of earlier Japanese cars.

It's less the 'omg imports' without looking at the history and what they've pulled from. As for Miata's being a little bit on the off-side - it's essentially a Lotus Elan (chassis) with a 1.8 that was styled to sound like an MG.

But what do I know.
