The continual drop in game sales, particularly for the PC, is basically a Myth. The measures used by firms like NPD exclude digital sales, microtransactions, pay-to-win, DLC, and-- hell-- even physical sales not done through retail locations (like with Stardock, where they sometimes offer both a digital and physical copy directly from the developer). Playstation Network? XBox Live Arcade? Steam and Origin? Don't exist. You know that DLC/expansion that just came out for Skyrim, 'Dawnguard'? Well, that doesn't exist either because it wasn't in a box at your local Walmart.

The fact is that the industry just hasn't caught up to, well, itself. The article says that software sales are down to $278 million. NPD estimates that digital sales are $439 million in that same period, yet doesn't include all that money because it's 20-goddamn-12 and they're still not tracking 'non-traditional' forms of delivering content. Gee, I farking wonder where all the sales are 'disappearing' to.

To be fair, there hasn't been many games released in the past 8 months worth a damn.

Kids dont' have jobs to waste their money on games. Parents are out of work. I guess silly luxuries like games come second to eating

Major Developer Sales are down, but other areas are prospering.

Look at the Ouya , for what it's worth that crazy little lab experiment of a console might do some good.

Steam Sales happened, PSN sales are just going on, the Humble Bundle was a pay whatever you want deal and made a shiat load of cash. A lot of people are picking up swaths of old and indie games as opposed to dropping the big bucks on a $60 title. This is a good thing.

Oh and color me shocked that console sales have gone down 8 months since the American Holiday Season(tm).

Hey, geniuses, do you know what happens at the end of a console generation? Sales fall. Why? Because people are tired of playing on the same hardware they bought 6 years ago. Why do you think Apple releases a new phone every year and "accidentally" leaks prototypes to build hype?

Guess what else? Video game sales are higher than they've ever been. There have never been more hardware sales, and never have there been more game sales. Guess what will happen when the next-generation of consoles are released, starting with Wii U? That's right, tons more sales, and stupid articles about how interesting and fun the next-generation of hardware is.

Do you also know what's the best way to get stupid people to give your crappy article hits? That's right: sensationalist doomsday scenarios.

Didn't we get a headline like this last year? Dude, the better games come out in fall. Of course there's a dip in summer.

This must be the same guy who writes about the dangers of improperly cooked stuffing and flash frying your turkey during Thanksgiving.

I'd say a large part of the problem is that there simply haven't been many games coming out, much less ones worth paying release prices for. Right now we're in the typical dead period, but there's normally something of an uptick from March until early-mid summer, and that just didn't happen this year. Maybe it's the "finally prepping for new consoles" thing, but I haven't heard much about those yet either.

This is the slow season right now anyway, any smart publisher is now holding off until closer to the holiday season, so right now it's mostly crapware and movie tie-in stuff.

Of course, there are some exceptions.
