Well yeah, you have to have that many kids to help work the farm and because half of them are going to die before adulthood. Wait, I've just been handed a note. It turns out this is the 21st century.

I know the Bible said "be fruitful and multiply," but wasn't that when they needed to repopulate the planet following the flood? The planet has been repopulated; I think they can stop now. That poor woman.....my mom had two kids, and that damn near wrecked her. I couldn't imagine my mom doing that another 17 times.

I am pretty sure I came across something somewhere about a woman who a) had 15 kids and b) was in some sort of legal trouble. Either that or I dreamed it.

But none of the dads in these reality shows hold a candle to Dennis Rodman's dad, who fathered a starting five, nine and O-line with a few in reserve.

It helps if you can keep them well-behaved using a stick no thicker than your thumb, and by threatening them with eternal torture in Hell if they disobey you. Farming off the little ones onto the older daughters helps too, because they're not going to have a social life anyway until they're married off to a well-mannered but domineering man their father knows from church.

Also, for mom, knowing that her constantly-gravid uterus is her sole worthwhile asset on this earth and that God will frown on her for having any other ambitions or goals in life can help soothe over any physical pain or emotional rough spots.

Check out the No Longer Quivering blog site. Chock full of stories of women being treated like cattle, pumping out kids until their bodies are wrecked, submitting to their husbands until their personalities are destroyed.

I would not be surprised to have some of the daughters of these big TV families come out later and reveal a lot of abuse going on behind the scenes.

Wasn't Mrs. Bates using fertility drugs? I seem to recall her admitting that.

In any case, the Bates and Duggars are obviously competing with each other and they're going to do their best to keep having kids until one family "wins". I feel bad for the kids in both families because any hope they have at a normal life is shot as soon as their parents signed up for reality shows.

"You'll be seeing a lot of just family fun and harmony, trying to get along and doing a bunch of things together. Just having fun as a family,"

How much do you "love kids" if you make them wear some strange family uniform all the time, participate in weird (as compared to society at large) family rituals, and then make the entire family do EVERYTHING together? I'm sure that some of those kids just don't like each other very much, it's bound to happen in a family that big. And oh yeah--Gil? You don't have a farking clue what God wants, or what "Godly" choices are. It's beyond your comprehension. This is your personal power trip, you can farking blither on about "God" all you like. At least your slaves seem to swallowing it.

I have friends from extremely large families. Not Duggar large, but close. The reason they're able to maintain a middle class to upper middle class lifestyle is because the dads have high paying white collar jobs. My brother has a college friend who said that his parents have a running agreement that if they can keep the grocery bill under $1000 for the month they'll go out to dinner. They've never been able to keep it under $1000, and I think that's with a dozen kids.

There is no way that the Duggars or the Bateses, neither of whom have high paying professional jobs, are able to operate without lots of assistance and the TV show money. Though, unlike my friends, they don't send their kids to college so they don't have that financial expenditure to worry about.

I honestly do not have any problem with such a large family. They're blessed, IMO, to have that.

I know a fellow, close to the youngest of 18 children from Ontario (he's nearing 60 now), and listening to his family history and stories is amazing. He says how blessed he is that his parents had such a large number of kids, his siblings and their children, now grandchildren too. They all have each other ... and the pride he shows in his family is rapturous. To me that's lovely!

I saw a TV interview with the family. I think the "hook" is that all of the kids are home schooled and woefully ignorant; of the world, of different cultures, of pretty much everything. They live way out in the sticks, rarely leave their property, have no TVs, no radios, etc. The college age kids still live at home. Dad is a tree pruner and sole earner. It's a freakshow. For the interview the network flew the whole gaggle to NYC where the kids reacted to a shirtless man sunbathing in the park like they were seeing a solar eclipse for the first time.

See, that's why I can't bring myself to watch the show. I knew people like that growing up, and I just can't find that kind of thing entertaining. I just feel really bad for the kids because their parents kept them so sheltered that even if they do have normal friends it's not enough to balance out the purposeful ignorance that their parents have kept them in.

Though, doing the reality show and getting out in the world a bit more is probably the best thing that could happen to the kids, as messed up as that is.

It's empathy for the kids; it is not easy growing up in a big family and certainly doesn't help their collective fortunes. The quick jump to the conclusion that we're thinking about ourselves first reveals quite a bit more about your own personality than you probably intended.

The Duggars own several commercial properties free and clear and a couple of used car lots. The commercial properties bring in at least 10k a month. I doubt they own computers, cell phones more than one TV or have cable. The kids are all home schooled wear homemade handme downs. They keep expenses down.

Before the Duggars got the reality show they were living in a three bedroom house with one bathroom. Obviously they have more now, and have more income coming in now, but the reason for that is because of what they got from the reality show. The family I mentioned that spends over a thousand dollars a month on food is one with twelve kids, the dad is a federal magistrate judge, and even with homeschooling and hand-me-downs they're living month-to-month. I have a hard time believing that the Duggars, pre-reality show, actually had it better than a federal magistrate judge, especially given the shack that they were living in.

Without the reality show they'd still be living in that tiny three bedroom house because no matter what they claim, it's not possible to live anything other than a bare subsistence lifestyle with that many kids with what Jim Bob was doing for business, and their pre-reality show life bears that out. They're presenting this as a lifestyle that anyone can lead and it just isn't. If you're not in a high paying job and don't have a reality show you end up with the family living in poverty.

As far as reproduction goes, 19 is not an insanely "high score" for a man. It is an insanely high score for a woman.

Seeing the proud smug look on the parents' faces makes me feel all stabby. They are basically saying fark you world we're going to overpopulate until there is nothing left.

The tax rate should go up signifcantly if someone choose to have more than 4 kids. I bet they are paying close to nothing in taxes while simultaneously eating up the tax contributions of dozens of other families.
